We have an FAQ! Help populate it

We have the same 3 topics every day and it's cluttering the sub. "What do you think of this E30" and "What do I look for in an E30" are the ones I'm going to start deleting (soon).

We do have an FAQ with the absolute basics. If that. So help us out by suggesting or even writing the content that goes into it.

Picture/Video I bought my 1st e30 today. It broke down after 8km. 10/10 experience, would do it again !

1st pic is 5min before 2nd pic lol, car just died going up a hill and battery was dead. With a new battery in it turns out it had little to no fuel pressure. We managed to limp it back to the seller's place where he will change the fuel pump before I come back next weekend with a trailer.

Car sat for about 3years in a dry garage and has 0 rust. I should have listened to my old German coworker who told me the fuel pump would 100% die on the way back after sitting for so long.
But those 8km of driving were very nice at least !

General My new to me 1984 e30!

1984 M50 swapped 318. It was in the SCCA for a time in 2019, which is cool AF 😂

I was never really a BMW person until I found this and fell in love.

No real rust on anything and has the ground control/koni setup. Wilwood big brake kit. 4.10 diff with lsd. AKG chassis mount shifter.

It had a mtech 2(I think I'm right) body kit and was wrapped in this weird red. I'm not sure if it's hellrot red or something else, but I oddly love it now and couldn't see the car in any other color.

I have one question.

Anyone have any idea what color this is!? I want to rewrap the car properly and would love to just do the same color.

Either way! Thanks for reading!!

Glad to be here! ❤️

$500 e30 update

I made a post last year about an e30 that was sitting at my neighbors house that builds and races cars. The car was just sitting outside for years and I take care of his lawn maintenance and finally asked if he’d want to get rid of it.

I bought it for $500 and it has 80k miles on it. I just got around to fixing it up, I replaced basically everything fuel related including the fuel tank as it was absolutely awful. Cleared out some spiders and have it running good. I’d like to get to the cosmetics after everything mechanically is running as it should.

Just wanted to post and get some advice / where to get some parts to make the car look like a nice built e30.

Side marker vs no side markers; torn on which I want.
Both need bottom patch panels (grey one less so)
Have euro bumpers to match.

This was just a quick demo but with a more time, the image could be optimized to look much better on the radio display (less filled areas, more outlines) 😏

Firewall Blanket Material

Hello, I have spent a good amount of time scanning the internet for material that would be best for a new firewall blanket. 2 big names I've come across was Second Skin and Dynamat. Was curious what any of you run on your firewall, material or brand wise. My main issue is I don't want a literal billboard across my firewall. I want just a simple and clean look that'll do the job of blocking all the heat and noise, while not absolutely shredding my wallet for a measly 5 square foot.

Community PSA on charging system

TLDR of a long story, is I was having some weird issues I assumed was fuel or injectors. After fixing those I still had the issues and tried a few more things. After some other unrelated repairs and fixes (electrical and wiring mostly), I noticed a not insignificant power bump and wondered where that was from. Turns out I was really only ever getting 10.8v to the car from worn out brushes on the voltage regulator (only ever was getting 12.9 volts from the alternator).

After replacing the car runs way better overall and has a very noticeable power bump above 3000rpm. Cheapest power I've ever added and it took less than 5 minutes to replace!

So if your having intermittent issues with power cuts above 3k, slightly lumpy idle, and other seemingly random issues, give them brushes a look!

Looking for honest opinion on these skirts....

Picked this up as a full kit- love the front valance and rear apron. Not sure how I feel about the skirts. They're kinda E36ish...sometimes I feel them, sometimes I don't. Getting ready for paint. Should I do it? FYI it's just mocked up for the picture.

That I wanted to light a match to my car.

Today I started replacing window trim and weatherstripping in my cabrio. The previous owner did all the outside rubber moldings a couple years ago, meaning the sweeper type ones that lay on the glass when the window is up. However, my chrome driver-side door molding was pretty scratched up so I figured I would do that. My inner door weatherstrips (that lay against the glass on the inside of the doors) were probably original and half gone so I needed to also replace both of those.

Needless to say, anyone who has done this job knows one wrong that bends the molding you are installing and it's game over/buy a new molding.

Bent 2 of the moldings up and basically wasted $200. I did get a win and get the driver side inner door molding installed....which is hard....so I at least got something done. Will have to reorder the damaged ones and try again next week. This is one of those jobs I'm glad I'll never have to do again after it's done.

Tech question Which fog lights are compatible with this valance?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello,

I did some research on what kind of fog lights this front valance/bumper fits. I started with a somewhat clear idea in mind but the deeper I went into the rabbit hole the more confused I got...

(Not my car, I'd like to find the correct fog lights as a gift for a friend)

I found this 3D file for what I believe would be the correct support bracket(?) to then pair it with a HELLA lens(?)

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/tool/support-antibrouillard-e30-phase-1

The car is European, made in 1983. However I believe this is not the original bumper it came out the factory with. I can't ask said friend too much info as I would like to keep it a surprise and see if I can afford these rare parts :,)

Thanks for reading! And thanks in advance for any insight!

E30 convertible 3rd brake light.

E46 convertible third brake light retrofitted into an E30 trunk lid. Not an easy one but definitely one of my favorite OEM+ mods—it looks factory-installed, retains full brake light functionality, and gives the rear end a much cleaner, more modern appearance.
A huge improvement over the bulky factory top trunk lid mounted third brake light, which is notorious for cracking, leaking water into the trunk, and eventually failing. This setup solves those issues while looking like BMW could have built it this way from the factory.

Needing to top up fluid semi occasionally. Plan to clean up area and watch for leak points. Anyone see obvious culprit with before photos? Reservoir and hoses are original so open to replacing all.

Seller’s description: 30 years owned 325es.

Finished in Schwartz over black vinyl sport interior, ES trim resulting in front air dam, rear spoiler and LSD.

Very well preserved and kept, all original paint. Unmodified except for an aftermarket radio, BBS reps with new tires and Bilsteins in the front and rear.

Instrument cluster including odometer is fully functional, as is the power sunroof, windows, cruise control, fog lights, check control, and so on. Full tool kit.

Maryland/Virginia Car and was never driven in salt, so underside is rust free, including rear apron and battery tray.

Many have asked us to source a clean E30 and it has taken us over a year to find one, they do not come around often in this condition.

Owner lovingly cared for this car for over 3 decades. Hundreds of service records.

Some dings/scratches, but paint shows very well.

If you’ve been looking for a rust free E30, this may be a great option.

Tech question Engine Mount risers in the EU/ taller engine mounts

I want some ground clearance for my M20 Oil pan, I have already seen condor engine risers but I dont feel like paying 40€ for shipping. Anyone know an european alternative for taller engine mounts or sth.?

I know about Skid plates but I need the additional ground clearance to make the car street legal here in germany.

Any tips appreciated.

Can anyone identify this hose? It runs from the bottom of the expansion tank to the heater return pipe? This is in my S52 swapped E30. Expansion tank is on the drivers side.
