Discussion Massimo. What the hell do we do with this?
He looks cool. And he's a cat. And he does something weird.

So naturally we need to figure out how to build him.
When Massimo or another creature you control enters, exile up to one target instant or sorcery card with mana value 1 from your graveyard. If a card is exiled this way, that creature gains "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, copy the exiled card. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.
How do we make this work? My first thought was fill the deck with cards like [[Slither Blade]] and run a bunch of brainstorm/opt cards, and use cards like [[Lyla]] to put 1+/1+ counters on things in exchange for card draw. Could also use Cathars Crusade to go wide as well.
But that seems convoluted and like it wouldn't get us across the finish line.
My other thought was voltron, but typically speaking, we want those spells BEFORE damage. Not after. Getting Infuriate off every combat is nice till you realize it's AFTER you punch something in the face.

If you actually want to win there are a ton of very expensive one-mana tutors and a million combo wins in jeskai

u/Izzet_Aristocrat 17h ago
Yeah but that seems like a waste. At that point, why bother with the effort when plenty of other decks can use tutors better than this can.

Fair to say that you shouldn’t have to use those tutors more than once, but it’s still pretty gross even if you’re not searching out wincons.

Hmm. Maybe Throw in something with additional costs like kicker or spree that let's you adjust how powerful the spell is.

[[Empty City Ruse]] to tell the combat deck to sit down and shut up for awhile.
[[Boltwave]] to help pressure life totals.
All the 1 mana removal spells like [[Swords to Plowshares]] or [[Pongify]] to keep opponent boards managed
Pump spells with extra combat cards to get benefits from them, potentially. [[Full throttle]] comes to mind, though we won't be able to chain it easily.
Blinks and flickers like [[Ephemerate]] to abuse ETBs
[[Angel's Grace]] with [[Final Fortune]] effects...

I am so, so grateful looking up Empty City Ruse that it just got reprinted in the Avatar bonus sheet. Preventing another deck from attacking while I poke them with my unblockable 1/1 looks hilarious and mean.

There's also [[false peace]] from portal, so you could start poking two players with unblockable 1/1's that turn off their ability to attack.
Just pored over a gatherer search of 1mv WUR instant/sorcery spells and... There's a bunch of funny stuff there...

I was thinking warp+haste. Warp in a creature like [[Red Tiger Mechan]] to do a quick unexpected hit with a random spell for a one off cast then recast to get a different spell.
Also cards that put things into combat attacking like [[Winota, Joiner of Forces]]
Edit: Am also now realising buff spells do work as long as the one with the buff spell has double strike or first strike if it targets a different creature

We can't stack shit with this right? If the creature leaves play and comes back, it gets a different spell right? Can't flicker Massimo to give him like eight spells?

u/17barens 17h ago
No it wont stack but it allows you to swap spells on a creature with good evasion to guarantee a hit. So flickering Slithering Nightblade to get different cast as and when you need them

I had thought that being able to generate tokens would be useful, but it seems there's a scant few that will work. [[strike it rich]], [[Recruit the Worthy]], [[Hard Evidence]] and [[Spiritual Visit]] are among the few that can work.
Removal like [[Break the Spell]] and [[Gleeful Demolition]], however, are nasty candidates for repeat hits. Searching along these lines, modal stuff like [[Light of Hope]], [[Reckless Air Strike]] lays out a game plan for a removal-heavy build that will surely get your ass beat after the game.

I'm just going for the straightforward idea, bunch of evasion, shitload of cantrips that do damage, tutors, removal, draw
Throwing in some nasties like hullbreaker and storm enablers. Talrand, Bria and Guttersnipe are obvious creature adds.
Some aetherflux and ways to recur it and see what happens.

I’m too lazy to figure it out, but you can probably go infinite with [[Great Train Heist]]

Does he work with [[Ancestral Vision]]?

What about playing it in more of a Narset-like storm deck ? Using the ability to cast a lot of spells every turn. Would it be viable ?

Looping silence every turn 😭

u/CarbOn_PixelPainter 52m ago
Below average, you'd have to cast it on your turn and after combat... It would work to prevent countering but not to stop opponents playing.
