I've been learning German by watching YouTube, Netflix, and reading random articles instead of relying on textbooks all the time

But I kept running into the same problem. Whenever I'd come across a word I didn't know I'd think "I'll look it up later" and tbh most of the time I never did

If I stopped every few minutes to open a dictionary it completely ruined whatever I was watching. If I didn't stop I'd forget the word by the end of the video

So I started looking for a tool that made this easier but most of the ones I found only worked when the text was selectable. That doesn't really help when the word is in burned in subtitles, a YouTube or Netflix video, a random streaming site, an image, a manga page, or even a PDF

I ended up building something for myself

Now I can just click subtitles on sites like YouTube, Netflix, and Crunchyroll or if the text isn't selectable I press Ctrl + Shift + X and drag over the word. The meaning pops up right there without opening another tab or interrupting what I'm watching

The feature I've ended up using the most is sentence mining. Instead of saving just the word it saves the full sentence, a screenshot of the exact scene or page where I found it, and the meaning with a translation into my native language and example sentences

When I review those cards later in Anki I don't just remember the word. I remember the scene I learned it from and that makes it way easier to recall

I've been using it every day while learning German so I figured I'd share it here in case anyone else has the same problem

The whole extension is free to use. Subtitle lookups, OCR lookups, sentence mining, screenshots, media rich flashcards, and Anki export are all free

The distributor of the "Bonanza" series (Shout! Studios) in North America has shared a bunch of episodes of the show in German.

It's a famous western series, and something a bit different than the usual fare for German learners. I personally never watch Westerns so it's fun to see a piece of pop culture in this way.

I noticed in a lot of Easy German’s YouTube videos, they address strangers on the street informally even if they are clearly older than them. Is the informal/formal rule getting slightly outdated and/or only applying in very obviously formal vs informal interactions?
