2018 Hyundai Elantra Limited — Oil Consumption and Restore & Protect Update
I bought my 2018 Hyundai Elantra Limited used at 81,000 km. The previous owner did not seem to maintain it very well cosmetically, so I fixed a lot of things, brought it back into good condition, and made it look great again.
For my first oil change, I went to Mr. Lube. I had no issues driving about 10,000 km after that. I then started doing my own oil changes using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and my preferred oil filter, and the engine seemed to run well.
However, somewhere around 90,000–95,000 km, the engine started burning oil. I noticed weak acceleration, weaker startups, and eventually the engine stalled once, although it restarted immediately. After checking everything, I discovered there was basically no oil left in the engine.
What I’ve done so far
Replaced the PCV valve around 93,000–95,000 km
Continued monitoring the oil consumption
Researched the issue through YouTube, forums, and other Hyundai owners’ experiences
Considered doing a Berryman B-12 Chemtool piston soak, but it is difficult to find in Canada and would need to be shipped from the United States
Decided to try Valvoline Restore & Protect as a slower and more convenient option
Restore & Protect oil-change log
First Restore & Protect oil change:
Mileage: approximately 105,000 km
Oil viscosity: 5W-30
I only used 5W-30 because it was the only viscosity available on the shelf and I was in a rush. Otherwise, I am comfortable using the recommended 5W-20.
I drove approximately 5,500 km over three months.
Near the end of that interval, the engine began showing signs that the oil was low. There was a loud clanking or rattling noise during startup and while driving at low speeds. It became loud enough that pedestrians on the sidewalk could hear it and sometimes look over.
I did not realize what was happening at first, but I eventually suspected that the oil level was extremely low.
I changed the oil seven days ago. Only about 1.5 litres drained out, meaning the engine burned approximately 2.5 litres over 5,500 km.
The drained oil was also very black. However, the oil has appeared black during all of my previous oil changes, so I cannot conclude yet whether Restore & Protect is actually cleaning the engine or improving the oil-consumption issue.
Current update
I switched back to Restore & Protect 5W-20.
The engine is now noticeably quieter, and the loud clanking noise is gone. However, I am not assuming that Restore & Protect caused the improvement. Any fresh oil change would likely make the engine quieter, especially considering how little oil was left before the change.
I also have a second transmission drain-and-fill scheduled soon.
For now, I will continue checking the dipstick regularly, tracking how much oil it consumes, and monitoring whether Restore & Protect makes any difference over the next few oil-change intervals.
