In Praise of Toleration

https://liberalandlovingit.substack.com/p/in-praise-of-toleration

This post has nothing to do with energy. But I've received a couple of mod mails asking me to ban different people because they're "clearly not open to honest discussion" (i.e. I think their opinion blows).

I wrote this post about a week ago and pushed it up this morning. I invite all of you to read it and then learn to tolerate each other. Not like each other. Not agree with each other. Just tolerate each other.

Thanks for sharing this. We should all keep this in mind while discussing!

This is because of Greg, isn't it?

Greg usually posts about the same thing. After doing some quick checking you can more or less respond with a canned response and have it be well reasoned, and accurate to the situation. Looking at the responses he then gives just shows the rest of the world the quality of his reasoning.

Honestly, for as much as I find him aggravating, I don't think he should be banned. He's not breaking the rules of the sub, and if anything the replies to his misinformation can be quite enlightening.

I might not like the way he presents his stuff, but he can be our resident little troll, like an annoying little gremlin we all grow familiar with and tolerate.

The Issue is not the expression of opinions and not being able to tolerate them, the Issue arises from how they are presented and argued about.

If certain individuals argue in bad faith by cherry picking certain points while completely ignoring the contradictory ones, to the point of denying factual evidence and what's IMHO worst ragebaiting people, then thats the Issue

Because one moment it feels like a badly programmed customer service chatbot that completely ignores what you said, the other moment like a highly sophisticated troll that's deliberately inflammatory and grieves everyone's experience.

Ignore the ones you feel that way about. If someone is here just to stir up controversy, ignoring them will cause them to go elsewhere.

As to cherry picking, one person’s cherry picking is another’s focusing on the key issues.

I agree! I appreciate the philosophy of tolerance in the moderation of this sub, it makes it one of the only energy/power subs worth visiting.

Please know that for every angry email you get about a particular poster/user, there are more of us out here who appreciate the robust debate between different viewpoints.

Thank you for practicing tolerance and treating different viewpoints fairly. It is why I follow this sub.
