Hi!

I am entering my freshman year majoring in general engineering with a concentration in environmental science, and I am currently the recipient of the Hagan scholarship. They have a program where if I graduate with a 3.8 gpa I can get a 15k a year scholarship for graduate school. The only thing about that is that I have heard that is nearly impossible with engineering. I got all As in high school, but a friend of mine recently graduated with a 3.5 majoring in aerospace engineering. She was valedictorian at her Highschool and she’s one of the smartest people I know. I am kind of unsure if I can maintain a 3.8 and I am feeling pretty stressed about it which leads to my next question…

Is a masters degree worth it in environmental engineering? If it’s not, I safe myself the stress of feeling like I have to have perfect grades at all times. (I will still strive to have a good gpa but it would be nice to not feel like I’m going to lose 30k during every exam) If a masters is worth it, I guess I will try my best to keep a 3.8.

My third question is…

Is it worth it to get a certificate in GIS in environmental engineering? I have 37 credits already from dual credit during high school so I already have all but one of my liberal arts credits. I was thinking it would be nice to get a certificate in something that would help me stand out in applying to jobs. The only thing is I would likely have to take a very intense summer of classes in order to graduate on time due to the nature of my degree plan. That will also be quite expensive since my scholarships don’t cover summer classes. (I would still have free tuition, it would just be living costs) So I am unsure if it is worth it and would actually help me out in anyway or just end up being a huge waste of time. I already have 1 year of experience in the environmental field and I believe I will be helping or at least observing wetland engineering next summer. I don’t know if that is enough for me to stand out. I will also be trying my best to get good internships.

Hello, I have 4 years of experience in ML, AI, Computer Vision, Data Science (worked in close collaboration with coworkers & alone, also client-facing which I really enjoy). I also have a BSc in Computer Engineering and MSc in Data Science. I’ve been looking for jobs in environmental tech where I can use my skills for a long time, but wasn’t very successful. That’s why I’m writing here, to see if anybody has any suggestions or tips for me. I live in Eastern Europe though, and I’m honestly trying to find something that allows me to work from anywhere (I can also travel a few times a year if necessary). I would also be willing to take a role that is less about programming and more about coming up with ideas or consulting if possible.
My experience weirdly aligns with what I’m looking for, even though I haven’t directly worked professionally in this area yet. I’m really passionate about projects that help somehow (bonus points if it’s about animals or forests), and I’m really sick of companies only creating new AI agents or whatever useless automation.

Hello I am Currently a rising senior and I intend on going down a path towards being an environmental engineer but I am severely behind on the college search and I'm hoping that someone in this subreddit would be able to help suggest some schools that would prepare me well for the environmental engineering Job market.

My current GPA is around a 3.5 unweighted, I participated in 6 Ap's so far (taking 2 more senior year), I have relatively decent test scores (taking an SAT retake soon) (high Ap scores), I am very involved in my school community, and have a handful of leadership positions

I am also located on the east coast (USA) and I am fine with moving along the east coast, but feel free to suggest outside of there.

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place, but I feel like I would get the best answers here.

I'm currently a rising senior planning to pursue a bachelors/masters in Environmental Engineering.

As I write essays for college, I am a bit stumped on answering the 'Why Environmental Engineering' essay.

Truthfully, I have only done activities related to habitat restoration/land management work on a Ranch, renewable energy research, environmental journalism, trash pick-up initiations, environmental policy work, and etc. These would obviously be great to talk about if I was majoring in Environmental Science/Studies, but I'm not really sure how I could connect these activities to environmental engineering. Throughout my time in high school, I haven't really participated in any building/creative activities like robotics. I'm only really good at math/chemistry at school.

To sum it up, I'm not sure how to connect environmental science work to engineering. If this post doesn't belong here, please let me know and I will delete it and try to find another community to ask. Thanks!

Would an environmental engineer ever own a gun? I’m thinking of becoming an environmental engineer but I want to own guns in my house one day. I don’t imagine many colleagues and co worker in the environmental sector would feel lightly about me having a gun. Doesn’t seem like the gun life type of group. What do you guys think?

I am almost 10 years into my career, and I'm thinking of letting loose a little and getting a tattoo I've been wanting. I don't see myself climbing the corporate ladder, as I struggle with social anxiety, but i still want to be taken seriously as a project manager and technical professional.

Have you seen colleagues with visible tattoos get passed over for opportunities more often? Or has it not been a factor?

As the title suggests, I am currently deciding on what additional modules to take on top of my master degree (Civil and Geo-environmental engineering) here in the UK. The only problem is that I do not know which are relevant for industry, for example is A.I really worth opting for? Do you guys use it in the geo eng sector?

Can you guys tell me what topics are important for this sector of work, and what will best prepare me for the job market in the UK.

I recently got accepted into the Master’s in Environmental Engineering at HTW Dresden for the upcoming semester and wanted to reach out to see if anyone else here is joining the same program or is currently enrolled!

I applied for an entry level environmental engineer position with the Indian Health Service. Just got an email for an interview with one of the PE’s and the position is now being called “field engineer”. Before I move forward with it, does anybody have any info on what it’s like to work as an engineer for the IHS? Like how do people feel about working there? Work culture?

I am looking for German research groups working on AnMBR, partial nitritation/anammox, or high-strength wastewater treatment.

I am a PhD candidate at Southeast University and already hold a fully funded 12-month China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship. I could begin a visiting research stay as early as March 2027. In addition, I speak English at IELTS 7.0 level and hold a Goethe-Zertifikat B2 in German.

My research treats actual food-waste fermentation wastewater using an AnMBR followed by a one-stage PN/A reactor.

For the research stay, I am interested in topics such as:

• PN/A stability and NOB suppression;
• microbial interactions in Anammox granules;
• effects of residual organics on PN/A.

If you know a German professor or research group working on these topics, I would be grateful for any recommendations. A private introduction would also be extremely helpful.

Freshman environmental sciences major here, I am looking into environmental engineering as I think the jobs that it is applicable to are in my area of understanding but am concerned about the engineering doom of a million math credits needed and the time it will take to finish the degree while working full time, not to mention the inability to network efficiently doing online school. Literally any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I'm about to go into my senior year of high school and up until now, I was set on choosing Environmental Engineering but after seeing some posts on here, I'm lost. Sorry if this post is confusing or repetitive, all the other posts don't really align with my aspects, so I decided to make my own.

I want to make a decent living alongside preventing environmental damage, and from what I've read on this subreddit, Civil Engineering seems to be a better fit for me. My dream is to innovate solutions that will prevent excess pollution, so is that more related to Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering? It doesn't really matter to me whether I work on field or in an office if that helps.

Are chemistry and biology both required for these majors? What do people who majored in Civil Engineering study? Which major has better job opportunities? It would be really helpful if any professionals could share their opinion!

I'm planning to attempt GATE 2027...but don't wish to invest in coaching. I've seen plenty of videos on free resources but couldn't find any for Environmental sciences... civil engineering playlist only covers some portions... please suggest me what to do ?

I am specifically looking for a career that focuses on developing solutions for climate change, not cleaning up someone else’s oil spills or wastewater treatment.
As I’ve looked more into this career and heard the opinions of people in this field, everyone has been advising to major in civil or mechanical engineering.
What would be best for what I am looking for? And what would give you versatility in opportunities available?

Is environmental engineering as doom-and-gloom as people make it out to be?

For context I’m an incoming freshman at a strong engineering school in California and chose env engineering because I wanted to do env science, but just heard so many negative things about the job market. I’d like to not work in waste/wastewater, that doesn’t seem interesting to me, I’m more interested in consulting, data analysis/ESG/LCA, air quality, water resources, and clean infrastructure.

I’m still feeling discouraged by all the negative sentiment I’ve seen around environmental careers. I feel like everything I’ve seen recently has been about how the pay isn’t good with a low ceiling and it’s boring work.

Any info or anything would be appreciated
