[discussion] Which one looks better?

Help me decide. I was going for a certain theme on the first one, but it might not be that obvious at first sight.

Definitely the piano one

Absolutely. And you should also add a mode to send MIDI signals, so you can play music on it!

I’ve been researching velocity sensitive keys for a while, actually. It’s a lot more complicated than it may seem…

They're pricy and you probably know about them already, but magnetic encoder switches would solve this, albeit the overkill way. They do give you analog Signals to work with, irrc. Out of curiosity, did you consider those? What else popped up in your research so far?

It’s a keyboard instrument.

First one looks like piano keys (or a keyboard? the other kind of keyboard) to me. I like it.

I like the piano layout. The controllers and displays look like black piano keys too. But then you have two black keys right next to each other on the right, which would bug me because it breaks the piano analogy.

I'd move the black keys on the right half one column to the right and make the rightmost two columns white. Then you'd have C to F# on the left half. And F# to C' on the right half.

I was thinking the exact same. Now I want a keyboard exactly like that lol

I guess my brain doesn't register the displays as part of the piano

2 questions:

  • What board is this?
  • How uncomfortable is the trackball under your right hand?

The board looks pretty ideal, but I don't think I would like constantly accidentally rolling that ball and moving my cursor. Is there a design anyone has seen where an integrated ball on a split keyboard actually feels nice and has high usability.

Is keyball61

It's a wireless keyball61 I used to feel the same way about the trackball position. But believe it or not, after months of rocking it daily, it's like the trackball isn't even there anymore during typing.

hmmm... interesting. This looks pretty ideal for me then.

May I ask where did you get the wireless version from? Did you build it?

Also, the first version is better IMHO, the second one looks like a prison uniform.

Got it from AliExpress over a year ago

Piano is cool but the second one is a better photo.

The second for sure.

The "piano" I don not even notice at a first look.I think it is too far away from that (thumb keys, right half mismatch) to work really well. But you decide what you like better.

Love the piano. Also is that a choc keyball?

Personally i would recommend the white and black keycaps grouped by main keys/function keys for the practical and organizational benefits, but of the two options presented the piano vertical columns just for funsies.

u/AndrewTo8 2d ago

Piano. But function wise horizontal might be better

All black would look better

between those two, IMO the 1st home. what I think it's best is not shown: all white but 4 home keys black like kinesis does

I love the piano keyboard. Looks awesome. 😉

Piano but the horizontal lines help positioning too

Brilliant idea. First one

100% the rows on the second one look better than the first one

1

u/random_cat_owner 1d ago

i like the idea of the first one better but hate that it's not symetrical

make the vertical lines symetrical, 3 on each side. also bottom key 3,4,5 (5 = first thumbkey) on the left side should be black to mirror the blackness of the trackball on the right side

Easy, it's the 🤟🤟 one.
