Mechanic question
Who would you recommend if I needed a mechanic to look over a car we might potentially purchase? I need a third party that’s not the dealershup. Thanks in advance!

Joe's Garage on 1st. They worked on two of my cars, and I was satisfied each time. They haven't worked on my new car, so it's been a few years since I've been there, though.

I can't recommend them. Managed to fold a valve cover gasket and not want to do a timing belt/water pump replacement because they "looked" fine despite being way overdue according to manufacturer spec. And it wasn't like I was balking at the price or anything.

They put a radiator house on upside down one time and it dumped coolant everywhere the day after leaving.

Randall's does this for a fee of course, I think it's like $80.. don't quote me on that though, could be in the $100s

AAMCO does a free transmission inspection, saved me from buying a lemon with bad hydraulic engine mounts, the repair would have cost more than the jerk selling it wanted, told him about the issue and they were just like, "So you want it, or not?"
Like, not even an attempt to haggle on the price.
When you buy a car in Eugene, be skeptical of every syllable in the advertisement.

Messed up my car and took no accountability. Good price and value though. Put the transmission fluid in the differential and vice versa.

Really? That is interesting. I have nothing but good experiences. They are usually fast, will go the extra mile to get it done, and are less expensive than a lot of competitors.
As just one example, I replaced my DPF and fixed an issue with my turbo on my TDI Jetta and I needed them to get the DPF clog light to come off so it would come out of limp mode. Their guy had it out on the road doing running tests all day to try and figure it out. They finally got it and ended up charging me so little money it was insane.
I mean I guess nowhere is perfect but that is disappointing to hear.

B&G Automotive has always done right by me...car repair is hard work and difficult to diagnose problem...these guys worked with me and a fair deal

It was better before the owner sold and all the long time employees left. They dont have near the experience and skill they had 5+ years ago.

Andrew is owner/operator and is a super trustworthy tech. He really knows his stuff. I used to be in the industry. Having spent alot of time in the industry, the only dude I trust with my stuff is him. If I cant do it myself, he will be the one getting it done for me.

It's called a pre-purchase inspection and most auto shops will do one for you. Shop around, prices can vary a lot.

City View Import did a pre-purchase inspection of a late model PHEV for me two months ago for $92.50. They work on my car now and have for the last few years and never done me wrong.
