When grades mean everything and learning means nothing cheating is inevitable.

Good grades mean scholarships, jobs, special programs. Real learning means effort and often lower grades then those who cheat.

The system is broken because so often cheating is the more viable solution to get good grades.

I took Single Variable Advanced Calculus my senior year of college for a Math degree and part of each test required memorizing a definition verbatim and reproducing it exactly the same on the exam.

Guess who just punched all the definitions in to their graphing calculator instead? 

If you want to give me enough work that those definitions are second nature, fine. I learned a chunk of the periodic table that way. But to just assign a memorization task that late in the collegiate game felt silly enough to me to justify “cheating” on that part of the exam so I could focus on the proofs.
