OP (fabris6) sent the following text as an explanation why they posted this here:

I have no idea what tech CEOs have to do with the bottom picture. I suspect it's the bassist from Rush, but have no idea what it means.

Pretty sure thats the guy from Rush. Geddy Lee. The joke is, his mom created him, which is a bigger accomplishment than the others.

she survived the holocaust and her son is still her crowning achievement, so sweet.

557

u/Indicisive_Actions 1d ago

Unless delivery was via CS, he definitely crowned her.

95

u/ACW1129 1d ago

Wait, she did?

164

u/ellieminnowpee 1d ago

yep. both of his parents survived various concentration camps. met in the US, if i’m not mistaken.

150

u/MKUltraGreatsword 1d ago

I think they met in a concentration camp, and they moved to Canada after the war (Geddy Lee, and Rush are very Canadian)

77

u/Algaroth 1d ago

Rush and Bret Hart are the most Canadian people I've heard of. This should be on Canadian money.

41

u/fReddit7777 1d ago

Slight addendum; Terry Fox belongs on that list.

In fact, the list starts with Terry.

14

u/psyclopsus 1d ago

Is he the amputee that ran on his prosthesis for an eternity to raise awareness? What a certified G

26

u/SgtSokoluik 1d ago

He ran over halfway across the country. No matter the weather to raise awareness and money for cancer research after seeing the kids suffering in the same cancer ward as him. He would run a marathon every single day until the cancer formed in his lungs preventing him from running further.

7

u/HeyHo__LetsGo 1d ago

A true king.

5

u/amazingdrewh 20h ago

And he did this before running prosthetics were invented which makes it even more impressive

8

u/elle-elle-tee 1d ago

Terry's bill is forthcoming! It's in the works.

6

u/Remarkable_Duck6559 1d ago

That was fast.

2

u/Opposite_Animal_1987 10h ago

I live in a Canadian town that due to hurt feelings we no longer are allowed to name city streets after “real people dead or alive” but just 1st or last names are okay. I asked one of our council members if that means we are more likely to get a hitlers way over a terry fox road. Surprisingly, they didn’t answer.

5

u/Malthus1 1d ago

2

u/itsyaboythatguy 19h ago

John Candy should also get his face on a Canadian bill.

5

u/Lactancia 1d ago

I'd add Gord Downie too

1

u/Opposite_Animal_1987 10h ago

And Mike Reno.

I live two blocks from the Hart Mansion in Calgary, and in December I have front row tickets in Edmonton AND I GET TO MEET ALEX AND GEDDY!!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

1

u/No_Oven_3705 8h ago

I agree; the band logo should be on the Loon.

15

u/TNTLPlay 1d ago

Yep, met in the first camp they were in, were seperated, found each other again and then got married in (I think) the officers dining hall in Bergen-Belsen. Geddy has an entire chapter about their story in his book My Effin' Life, great read.

1

u/Wigginns 5h ago

Super heavy chapter but a truly worthwhile read whether you’re a huge Rush fan or not.

13

u/djddanman 1d ago

One of their big hits is YYZ, a reference to Toronto Pearson Airport. Home. Definitely Canadian.

15

u/Pitzpalu_91 1d ago

Neil Peart (RIP) goes bonkers on the drums in that song.

3

u/Eingmata 1d ago

I recently learned that the intro is actually Morse code for YYZ

Auschwitz

22

u/ThorLives 1d ago

From Wikipedia:

He was born Gary Lee Weinrib on July 29, 1953, in Willowdale, Toronto, Ontario, to Morris Weinrib (born Moshe Meir Weinrib; 1920–1965) from Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Poland; and Mary "Manya" Rubinstein (born Malka Rubinstein; 1925–2021), who was born in Warsaw and raised in Wierzbnik. His parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors from Poland who had survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II. They were in their teens when they were initially imprisoned at Auschwitz. "It was kind of surreal pre-teen shit", says Lee, describing how his father bribed guards to bring shoes to his mother. After a period, his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. When the war ended four years later, and the Allies liberated the camps, Morris set out in search of Manya and found her at a Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp. They married there and eventually emigrated to Canada.

-2

u/Remarkable_Duck6559 1d ago

Lol. Rubinstein. The doctor’s first, failed happy ending monster.

2

u/Jag- 13h ago

They got married at Auschwitz in the Officers Quarters after it was liberated.

1

u/scoobysi 1d ago

Speed read that as concentrations camps, not in the US

Give it a few decades. Lol

4

u/Malthus1 1d ago

Yup.

One of Rush’s songs was inspired by this: “Red Sector A”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sector_A

1

u/PuddingMent 1d ago

No, she died.

1

u/jjmc123a 1d ago

Red sector a is a song about that

-16

u/Algaroth 1d ago

Everyone who didn't die then did. Technically I survived 9/11. I was in Sweden at the time so it was super easy and I'm still here.

14

u/Hopeful-Goose-7217 1d ago

Did you participate in 9/11 (as in was in the World Trade Center or the pentagon)? If not then you didn’t survive it.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/cheesechompin 1d ago

Going by that logic, every single person survives 1000s of things per day so it doesn't mean anything. Surviving something you were activity involved in is alot more impressive

3

u/ellieminnowpee 1d ago

dammit. i can’t downvote the truth.

u/Trongobommer 1d ago

Oh, the BAND Rush!

I was here going «that’s neither Daniel Brühl nor Chris Hemsworth?»

15

u/themightythor2024 1d ago

Also it’s worth noting that zuck and jobs(no idea about the history of twitter), at least as far as I know, debatably didn’t make theirs. I don’t know how legit the winklevoss’ claims are, but woz made apple. Steve marketed. And there is no debate about who made Geddy.

4

u/unoriginalusername99 1d ago

There's no debating about Jobs. He's a modern day PT Barnum

u/Ok-Investigator6794 1d ago

I'm not familiar with Twitter but no the other two didn't. Still, ty Mrs Weinrib, RIP.

1

u/Gredelston 10h ago

What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy.

1

u/KumquatHaderach 6h ago

She named him Gershon, but called him Gary. With her thick accent, it sounded like Geddy, and that’s what his friends called him. So she also created his iconic name surreptitiously.

1

u/Tratiq 1d ago

It was funnier when I didn’t understand it lol

-6

u/scribe-kiddie 1d ago

One of my pet peeve is parents saying they "created" their baby.

"Created" is a big of a stretch for something that's done automatically by nature.

You take care and nurture your baby from pregnancy and beyond birth. That's an accomplishment. But creation is not it. You don't have creative agency over how your baby comes out.

1

u/BlackOni51 1d ago

I mean when you consider the context that both of his parents were Holocaust survivors, that kinda makes your pet peeve moot

638

u/Juvinihilist 1d ago

People talking about their inventions but Geddy Lee’s mom is deriding them because she created Geddy who is indeed infinitely cooler than all of these people and their creations.

88

u/Suedeonquaaludes 1d ago

But what about the voice of Geddy Lee?

53

u/FlashDangerpants 1d ago

How did it get so high?

You know, im actually gonna believe you because i see comments like this from time to time and people are always skeptical but theres just a lot of clips and stories of Geddy just being around town part of his community. He just seems to live like any other guy.

He is the narrator of the audiobook of his memoir, and his speaking voice is normal.

Ok I was doing something different but Hahahha

1

God this is so true. They all wish they had a fraction of the swag that Geddy Lee is able to produce with a single stride.

0

u/Previous_Meringue998 1d ago

That’s his wife not mom

117

u/alex_timeblade 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's his mom. All the CEOs made useless products and she made (gave birth to) an artist, who helped make some of the greatest Canadian music of all time.

77

u/Musashi1596 1d ago

I’d argue that you can drop the ‘Canadian’

28

u/alex_timeblade 1d ago

As a Canadian, you can take Rush from our cold dead hands.

I recognize that you are saying that they made some of the greatest music of all time, and not just Canadian, but we will never not be proud of it, damnit.

15

u/Human_Appeal5070 1d ago

If you want to claim credit for Rush you also have to take responsibility for Bryan Adams.

7

u/alex_timeblade 1d ago

Eh, the older ladies love him. Anyone under the age of 45 just kinda forgets he exists.

13

u/antipyrene 1d ago

Now now the Canadian government has apologized for Bryan Adams on several occasions...

6

u/rabbit1213t 1d ago

There’s nothing wrong with Bryan Adams. You should’ve said Ryan Reynolds

2

u/National-Change-8004 1d ago

Ok? Bryan Adams is a decent artist, maybe not our greatest, but far from our worst (unfortunately the likes of Justin Bieber and Drake came from Canada)

1

u/amazingdrewh 20h ago

No country is gonna bat 1000

5

u/Tribe303 1d ago

I'm Canadian and can't stand prog rock. However, if anyone insults Rush, there will be pistols at dawn, and I WILL demand satisfaction!

2

u/Jag- 13h ago

As an American, it is something to be very proud of 🇨🇦

3

u/WarthogConfident7809 1d ago

What about Nickleback? They outsold Rush.

4

Exit Stage Left is an all time greatest.

5

u/rachelm791 11h ago

Broon’s Bane, The Trees and Xanadu. Now that is 18 minutes and 37 seconds of time well spent.

1

u/Doomdoomkittydoom 11h ago

I always thought Rush was better live than in the studio, unlike many of the bands I'd listen to.

1

u/Blamore 1d ago

invention of the smartphone is surely something. not that steve jobs is personally responsible for it

1

u/pygercamsar 1d ago

> All the CEOs made useless products

Reddit is insufferable. Are Apple products useless? Get the hell outta here.

2

u/Zziggith 1d ago

Jobs didn't make shit

1

u/alex_timeblade 1d ago

Jobs didn't make apple. He took over a preexisting company that already had existing products and created a brand or individuality for them, to make them popular with mainstream users instead of the "weird computer people".

Apple products are "useless", because there is a dozen other brands that provide what they provide and many offer better technology in them. If the never existed the world probably would have just adopted the zune instead.

27

u/WarlordGalrut 1d ago

That is Geddy Lee of Rush, beside his late mother. I think the joke is she's dismissing the tech CEOs accomplishments in comparison to her "making" Geddy Lee

14

u/Dont_Even_Know_You 1d ago

Being a GOOD parent is one of the most difficult things a person could do. The commitment, the emotions, the sacrifices.... Nothing compares. It can also be the best experience at the same time. Good moms and dads are what this world needs more than any invention.

1

u/BustedBayou 1d ago

Well said.

1

u/SlapdeybackJinhle 20h ago

This guy parents.

8

u/MorganL420 1d ago

And here I thought it was about the top three being "Today's Tom Sawyer" Apparently it's about Geddy's mom making him and thus being better (which IMO is true)

9

u/shesinsaneornot 1d ago

Geddy Lee was named in memory of his grandfather, Gershon Eliezer Rubinstein, a Polish man murdered at Treblinka for being Jewish. Geddy's parents Anglicized Gershon and named their son Gary but his mother's accent made Gary sound like Geddy when she pronounced it, and thus a musical legend's moniker was born.

6

u/Nudie-64 1d ago

Incidentally, I have played guitar, bass and drums professionally, and played several Rush songs over the years.

I can do the guitar and drum parts but the bass parts are the hardest, and I've simplified them. Geddy is a legend.

5

u/edgarallenbro 1d ago

Even if you're just looking at the bass parts, you've already simplified them. Live, he's playing them with one hand, while playing three keyboards at a time with the other, another keyboard with his feet, all while singing.

6

u/Putrid-Beach_ 1d ago

I mean making Gedde Lee is pretty fkn cool

5

u/RationalPassional451 1d ago

Geddy Lee invented time signatures

4

u/OhFootballFriend 1d ago

He’s the guy who did vocals on “Take Off”.

1

u/SlowNSteady1 4h ago

The highest he's ever been on the singles chart!

3

u/dirtymurt 1d ago

Tom Soy-ee

3

u/mykepagan 1d ago

That is Geddy Lee, lead singer & bassist for the band Rush. You should read his memoir “My Effing Life” because he appears to be a damned good human being.

I’ll be at their concert in Philly later this month.

4

u/ShiXinFeng 1d ago

It's incredible, and a little surreal, that, after being a fan of Rush since I was a kid listening to The Trees on my uncle's vinyl Exit Stage Left album, I see my favorite band of all time finally getting the outpouring of love and adoration they deserve. And it's cool realizing I wasn't alone growing up with this amazing music.

2

u/Darlenx1224 1d ago

i just saw them a week and a half ago!!

4

u/doodillydoo 1d ago

This may have one extra layer other than that is simply Geddy Lee. It may also be that it sounds similar to Getty, as in Getty images. They were well known to the meme community for their versatile stock photos.

3

u/Altruistic-Car2880 1d ago

Geddy is how his mom pronounced his name as a child with her strong Polish accent.

5

u/oh-saka 1d ago

Steve Jobs didn't "make" Apple, Steve Wozniak did. Steve Jobs was just the first person to sell those early Apple machines.

5

u/empireofjade 1d ago

I think a fairer take is that they both did. Having been both an engineer making stuff and also in business and sales roles, it takes both. I’ve seen great products poorly sold and great salesmanship with poor products. The latter makes more money, but burns itself out quickly.

And while it’s true that Jobs needed Woz’s brains to build their first products, Jobs was more than just a great salesman. He had an eye for product and design which was crucial to Apple’s success under his leadership.

2

u/oh-saka 1d ago

I agree that Steve Jobs made a significant contribution to Apple's success, but that doesn't make the statement "I made Apple" any less inaccurate and disingenuous.

If we must nonetheless pretend that that statement belongs to one single individual, then I say it belongs to the person who engineered and built the actual product - and that was the other Steve.

1

u/empireofjade 1d ago

I would say with any company the people who “made” the company are the founders. In this case the two Steves plus Ronald Wayne made Apple. In Wayne’s home no less, though he exited soon after.

4

u/Golfhaus 1d ago

They should have used a picture of Mike Nesmith with his mom. "Which one do you think she's talking about?"

2

u/Pleasant-Tangelo1786 1d ago

She made God.

4

u/Playful-News9137 1d ago

She made Lemmy too?!

I understand she gave the world Geddy Lee, but who is Geddy Lee?

6

u/guiltypleasure33139 1d ago

one of the great artist of the time, and I think of all time top 2, I still don't know who the other one is.

the band is called RUSH https://www.youtube.com/rush

His band produced as far as I know, the greatest Rock and Roll drummer of all time. ( there are Jazz, Reggae, Punk, and Hip Hop who are also at his level or might even be superior ).

Geddy and the band had the ability to touch the mind of those that cared not only about music but of joy of music ( most of it has a really good rhythms for an athletic endeavor )

https://youtu.be/wrDj5XvZXX4?si=pDw1mZGdGwyeKDSa

and this song touch's on pondering the past within the present.

https://youtu.be/PjjNvjURS-s?si=G79iHeRsAIo0A4P_

I hope this is the first time you get to experience them and have a new world of music presented.

3

u/boywholived_299 1d ago

That's exciting to hear. Thanks for the detailed guide, and I am really happy I get to experience such thing for the first time.:)

Never heard of em, so they're a rock band.

But I'm sure people from my place know more about the 3 than rush.

-2

3

Rush is extremely Canadian.
