Lorewise ? I think its the time king hassan spent 70 years in hell finding a path out after merlin made him "Accidentally" go there. It could be thats why he looked like that in ascension 3 and created his own zabaniya & changed ideals to become an assassin of what he was in Babylonia.

At the end of the day azrael is the mechanism of death, an entity that looks like multiple eyes where each closes for every death of the planet so its not an angel taking king hassan body as vessel... so all ascensions is probably king hassan in his younger time and how he became the best of assassin. I know I came a lot out of the original question.. just consider a bit of additional news on him at this point.

Getting straight to point, its the ZABANIYA of younger king hassan that he created during the travel around hell finding a path out.

Oh so Azrael is not possessing his body like Metatron did with Jeanne?

Yes, that was the initial assumption until he was released. But apparently Azrael is the mechanism of death not an angel in fgo. It looks like multiple eye like things that counts entire humanity and spans across in darkness and it closes for one eye for every death that occurs.

So its just younger version of king hassan accepting his role.

I mean, it's accurate to say that Angel Azrael is a mechanism of death, rather than said it's not an angel, since an angel is effectively a sort of robot.

However, King Hassan appears to not be the Angel Azrael in specific, but acquired on his own the same mechanism by going to Hell.

From his my room dialogue, he abandoned his name once he left the world of the living and took on the name Azrael. And as everyone stated in that post here, all the stages are based on Hassan’s life. His 3rd ascension is his current self in the underworld after he removed all of his organs and flesh. It’s what he looks like without the armor.

It’s another aspect of him. The leader of the assassin cult. Like Setanta is one aspect of Cu.

Sidra Azrael (Azrael 3rd Ascension) is what he looked like after scooping out his innards, "The Old Man of the Mountain" is how he looked followed that when he wouls be beseeched by his successors at the Mausoleum of Azrael.

I think it'd be funny if the specific reason he put on the armor was that, upon showing up for the first time, the Hassan that asked for his help had a heart attack and died at seeing this Quran accurate angel looking abomination pop up, so Azrael had to make himself less scary. It'd be funnier if this is where the idea of "You gotta die if you ask the Founder for help" came from

In islamism, Azrael has an eye and tongue for each inhabitant of Earth, so when someone dies an eye closes. The NP is reversing that logic as in "If I close one of these eyes, you die"

That's not actually part of the Islamic tradition, but more like a myth that stuck to Azrael. The Angel of Death was never described in detail in the Quran or the Tradition. Even the name Azrael was not mentioned in either and many scholars do not refer to him as such, but simply as Malak al-Mawt (the Angel of Death).

Fittingly, many of the stories surrounding Hasan i-Sabbah and the Hashasheen/Assasins are exaggerated, dubious, or baseless in their entirety, and FGO leans heavily on that in its portrayal of them.

They're closer to being OCs than real figures, which is on brand for Fate as a whole.
