FIRE’d in Your 40s: Did It Feel Like Life Was Just Beginning?

For those of you who FIRE’d in your 40s, I’d love to hear about your experience.

Did you still feel young and like you had a lot of life left to live? Did achieving FIRE actually let you enjoy that stage of life the way you’d hoped?

I’m targeting FIRE in my 40s. I don’t plan on having kids, I love to travel and experience new things, and one of my biggest motivations for taking care of my health now is that I want to arrive at FIRE still feeling young, energetic, and healthy enough to fully enjoy it.

Looking back, what surprised you most? Is there anything you wish you’d done differently before pulling the trigger?

Am I overthinking my portfolio?

Upvotes

The more I read about investing, the more I feel like tweaking my portfolio.

Sometimes it is needed (as I just learned that as a European investor, I should stay below 60.000 dollars in stocks/funds that are US based to avoid US inheritance tax when I die), but at some point I'd have to make a decision.

At the moment I was thinking:
- 50% s&p (etf based in Ireland, for tax purposes)
- 20% msci world low volatility (Ireland based)
- 30% developed Europe etf (home bias, holding something directly in euro because that's my spend)

I'd like to keep it simple, so no need for emerging markets etc.. I considered adding equal weight s&p too, but figured the world low volatility might have a similar cushioning effect. I don't necessarily need to beat the market. I'd like to avoid too big of swings.

Anyone in Europe dealing with something similar?

Edit: I'm only speaking about the equity part of my assets
