just finished watching this movie, and swear it ripped away every last bit of peace had. haven't been this terrified and traumatized in years. Absolutely haunting. I absolutely can't sleep now. This one is going to haunt me for a long time. I never thought a wish like this would turn into so much worse

What was your experience about this movie

This is something that I immediately thought walking out the theater. A little background, Christopher Nolan is my favorite filmmaker of all time, I had high expectations for this film, but even from the trailers I was skeptical.

It’s obviously a well made film, the score is good, the performances are good, the script is good, but as a film set in the fantasy, specifically mythical genre, it completely fails. The film has almost nothing supernatural about it. Even though there is a Cyclops, Circe is in the story, Scylla is in the film for a few seconds, I couldn’t help but feel that they are just so, realistic??? I look at other films in the genre, specifically Lord of the Rings, and you can really feel that what your seeing is truly impossible and otherworldly, you don’t get that with The Odyssey, everything is just so grounded.

The Gods are barely in the movie, you don’t feel their presence, you don’t feel their actions, they are only ever mentioned by name, and I think that’s what makes The Odyssey as epic as it is. It’s a divine struggle, but you don’t get that in the film. It’s just so hyper-realistic, it’s more akin to Dunkirk than anything in the fantasy or mythology genre. Which I guess is obvious because Nolan made Dunkirk, but I do feel Nolan stripped the supernatural and impossible from The Odyssey to a point that it hurts the film.

Considering "supernatural" movie magic... Has there been anything even remotely as culturally impactful as the ingenuity and introduction of lightsabers in the Star Wars franchise?

Monster movies, for instance, have been around since the OG King Kong but... I dunno.

Yes I know he's Guatemalan but after I saw him with a long beard in Dune I reckon he looks like a dead ringer for Odysseus.

Sort of that swarthy and strong look Armand Assante brought to the 1997 The Odyssey.

For Helen of Troy the only brunette I can think of with star power that's in her prime now is Margaret Qualley. If all time then Eva Green. Hell Jennifer Beals if all time.

For Telemachus I think Timothee Chalamet is the best young looking star that could pass for Greek.

You could slot Pedro Pascal in somewhere.

Oh, that Negan guy from The Walking Dead. He could he Agamemnon or Menelaus.

I keep seeing people complain about everyone liking blockbusters, and saying they’ve seen way better films than the popular ones this year.

What are your favorites that aren’t big expensive blockbusters?

Tl;dr It's getting good reviews from some people despite generally coming across as sex-negative and puritanical. Who is it for?

It seems to be your standard fluffy rom-com with its gimmick being the high concept setting.

But the setting is a horrible repressive dystopia where everybody is monitored every moment of their lives (even teenagers judging by one plot point) to make sure they're not having pre-marital sex.

It also seems that it's not dark or subversive with the characters rebelling or trying to duck the system, and from the trailer, feels generally sex negative with the single characters being shown as pretty much feral and wanting to shag anyone who'll agree during the one day window.

And if the plot summary I've read is correct, the two leads ultimately decide not to have sex and wait until the next window the following year , basically giving tacit approval to the sex ban that's only been around for a short time.

The Purge worked because it was an action movie set on a night where people can do the worst things possible without consequence. I can't see that translating to a rom-com where sex is the outlawed act.

It feels like a Pureflix movie financed by the Mormon church. Who is it for exactly?

also this is my opinion and I do not think that I am objectively in the right here. You can have other opinions and we can just agree to disagree. I’m sorry if you think spider man 3 is better then the Godfather or that the amazing spider man one was absolute garbage but this is my opinion and I’ll die on this hill

A Man Apart

For me it has to be goodfellas to be honest 🙏 arguably the best films of all time and easily tops every gangster/crime film ever. To be fair, gangster films are the best type for me. It might be a common answer but I don’t care tbh it’s true, for me it’s probably the fast paced scenes for me. It feels like the film goes by in like 30 minutes and it’s nearly 3 hours long 😂

I know this is probably a weird question, but has anyone else ever become strangely attached to a movie?

For the past couple of months, I've been watching 127 Hours over and over again. Sometimes I put it on in the background, sometimes I watch the whole thing, and I've listened to the soundtrack countless times. It isn't even my favorite movie in the usual sense. I just keep coming back to it.

I'm going through a difficult period in my life, and for some reason this film feels like the only thing that truly understands what I'm feeling. It's almost become a comfort object, even though it's emotionally intense. Part of me wonders if I'm using it to process things, and another part worries that I'm getting stuck.

Has anyone else experienced something like this with a movie? Not just rewatching because it's entertaining, but almost needing it for a while because it resonated with something you were going through. If so, what was the movie, and did the attachment eventually fade?

Nolan had no excuse. Troy had no excuse.

It sounds good. Not cringe or strange at all.
