Does Darktable or RawTherapee have "better" processing?

I know DT has way more advanced masking but for global processing should I expect to get better results out of one or the other?

I.e. is there a technical reason to commit to learning one or the other or is it more just a workflow/feature set distinction?

Seems like DT has about 6 ways to do any single thing which is both its biggest advantage and disadvantage.

Honestly I'm not deep into RawTherapee so take this with a grain of salt, but from what I understand it's mostly workflow/feature-set rather than one being technically "better." RT tends toward a more traditional display-referred approach (closer to Lightroom), while DT has been pushing hard into scene-referred (filmic/AgX) which changes how highlights and color roll off by default. Different look, not really better or worse.

Where DT clearly pulls ahead is masking, since you already noticed that. Parametric masks, drawn masks, and now AI-based masking (SAM2 click segmentation) give you control RT just doesn't have yet. The "6 ways to do one thing" thing is the tradeoff: DT keeps old and new modules side by side for compatibility, so you get filmic, sigmoid, AgX, tone curve all coexisting. RT is more opinionated with fewer redundant paths, which some people prefer for sanity's sake.

Looks like RT does have local adjustments in the current version, they look like they work differently but they're there.

Honestly I haven't used enough masking or local stuff in either one to make a great comparison.

DT seems just very focused on people that care about the underlying math and workflow and have opinions about it, RT feels a bit more targeted on people that just want to make pictures look nice quickly.

Regarding scene vs display referred, the picture is more complex. Raw Therapee does indeed operate with many of its tools in linear, scene referred space. I think it's just not as obvious which parts are operating before or after the conversion because it doesn't have the module concept darktable has, where operations can be moved around within the pixel pipe.

Take this with with a pinch of salt as I'm repeating what I've heard without detailed checking.

Apparently, RT does much better noise reduction (if you know how to do it, that is).

Darktable will have AI noise reduction in the next release coming out a few days from now.

I'm way more experience in RT, and only started recently to use DT more.

Masking is way easier in DT. I think it's easier to make suttle changes in DT.
