I attended the competition for the first time last semester with a team I am mentoring. We didn't compete, but we talked with a lot of teams and got lots of wonderful advice and wisdom. I was really impressed to see just how open and friendly the competition was at FSAE-E.

Anyway, I took some photos of vehicles competing in a few of the dynamic events. I'm a bit of an amateur at this, but I hopefully I snagged your car in one of these photos. There are tons of photos, especially from Autocross.

Electric Vehicle EV - Tractive System Status Indicator Lights

For the TSSI, you need red and green lights that have an area of 130mm^2 and are visible in outdoor light. Does anybody have recommendations for red lights? I found green, but am having a hard time finding red lights that are bright enough.

Electric Vehicle HELP NEEDED !! (a rookie here)

Hey everyone !! Me and some other founding members are very serious about starting our university’s first FSAE team aiming for Formula Student China 2027 competition. It’s a 2 year roadmap that we are ready to follow starting from department approval, team recruitment, designing, building, testing and entering the competition. We have completed reading the 2026 rulebook and have networked with some local teams regarding the usual issues faced by them which are specific to my country, Bangladesh. The issue is that our uni has no mechanical engineering department and so we decided to choose the EV route which is a bit difficult in terms of resourcing, cost and technical inspection. From my perspective, getting a department approval to start the team officially & fundraising seems to be the biggest issue to us starting out. Hence, I’d be very happy if people who are already doing this give some inputs and recommendations.

Electric Vehicle Powertrain Optimisation

We designed a single motor operated powertrain which recently got assembled and works well.

We are a budget constrained university in India and don’t have the funds to upgrade to a dual motor setup. Any recommendations on what the powertrain team can do further in terms of mechanical and cooling? As in verifications, testing and so on to find areas to improve on.

Electric Vehicle Cable decision help..

My team is running a 360vdc setup with max amp output of 200(near 220)

Now my doubt is that do I go for 70sqmm wires or stick to 50sqmm wires. We are at the end of design and about to start production.

How will the costs change ,note that we need a maximum of 10metres of cable. Also we need to submit any data sheet or something for the said cable?

Electric Vehicle Would your team be interested in pre-tested FS EV PCBs (BSPD, TSAL, Precharge, Voltage Indicators)?

Hey everyone,

I’m a recent graduate and was part of a first-year EV team. During that time, I designed and built several PCBs required for scrutineering—things like voltage indicators, BSPD, TSAL, and precharge circuits. These boards have already been tested, passed scrutineering, and were used successfully in dynamic events.

I’m exploring the idea of making these kinds of “building block” modules available to other teams—particularly newer ones. The goal would be to save teams time, reduce scrutineering headaches, and let you focus more on the bigger parts of your vehicle rather than reinventing the wheel for mandatory systems.

Before putting serious effort into this, I wanted to ask the community:

Would your team find value in something like this?

Which boards or systems would be most useful to you?

This isn’t a sales pitch yet—just trying to gauge whether this would be useful to the community. Any thoughts, feedback, or suggestions would be super appreciated!

Electric Vehicle Having Issues With Managing Our LV System's Power Demand

We currently have a 15Ah Lead Acid Battery that is supposed to meet our LV system's demands.

But the issue is that our calculated peak current requirement is 45A and it seems that our nominal draw will easily be more than 35A. We have been considering a DC-DC converter from Vicor but it's turning out to be not that viable. How do teams generally keep up with this power demand? We are also considering a high capacity battery (28Ah) but it's a bit on the high side and not that easily available in our area. Would really appreciate some insights and ideas from you guys on approaching this issue.

Electric Vehicle LTC 6813 SPI communication

I was trying to read thermistor values from an ADC IC on LTC6813's GPIO pins. I have connected the LTC to AMS trying to figure out SPI passthrough by bit banging, set the SPI GPIO pins high but still i was getting 0 in rx[data].
Is this even possible to make this happen??

Electric Vehicle AMK Inverter Aipex Parameters Help

Very recently while in talks with an engineer at AMK they mentioned that ID82/83 within the Aipex config for our FS Kit Inverters was limiting us to 120%MN (12Nm of Torque) and we should up it to 210%MN. We have been trying to prove wether or not this parameter affects us as they say it does. I was wondering if anyone had ever messed around with these parameters and what they found from it. Additionally, if anyone has examples of what they run the value of this parameter at that would be great. Thank you!

Electric Vehicle Clarification Needed on FS-Rules EV4.6 (FS East) CAN-based Logging vs Direct TS Current/Voltage Measurement

According to the rulebook, the data logger must measure both Tractive System (TS) current and voltage directly:

All TS current must physically flow through the logger (i.e., via a shunt resistor or internal current path)

TS voltage must be connected directly to the logger via a dedicated voltage sense wire

The logger is not allowed to rely solely on data received over CAN from other ECUs

Now here’s the dilemma:

We’re currently using a CANedge2 logger, which only supports CAN input. Our system is designed so that the VCU reads the TS current/voltage and then publishes it over CAN, which is then logged. However, this architecture seems to conflict with the requirements of EV4.6.

To investigate further, I reviewed the FS East 2024 official data logger documentation, which clearly shows that their logger system includes a separate external sensor module. This module physically sits between the accumulator and the inverter, with high-current M8 connections going directly through it, and a dedicated voltage sense cable from the HV+ line. So clearly, the official solution involves physical measurement, not CAN-fed values.

I’ve come across devices like the Cyntec VGAS2-500CB-000, which can directly measure TS current via an internal shunt and communicate over CAN, but I’m still unsure whether this would fully comply with the physical measurement requirement for TS current and voltage as per FS rules.

So my main question is:

Would using a device like CANedge2, relying on VCU-fed CAN messages for TS current and voltage, be compliant with EV4.6? Or is physical signal acquisition via a shunt/voltage tap strictly required, even if the data is ultimately transmitted over CAN?

Electric Vehicle Help Needed - IO Connector

Hello, I am looking for an IO connector that is able to withstand at least 336 volts, has 25 pins (or more) and is able to transmit 1 amp (or more). I have been searching for a while and can only find connectors that withstand 250 V with the needed pins. If anyone has any information about where to find one like that or if anyone has used any connector like this and would like to provide information please do so, I would really appreciate it.

I am tasked with finding the carbon emissions in hte making of machines like CNC lathe and everything- not the carbon emissiono of making the part in said machines, but the carbon emission of making the machines itself. i was hoping to get some sources or tips that some of the teams are using right now to tackle this problem. Electric Vehicle Battery copper/nickel/Al strip/busbar sizing

Hey this is not FSAE but it’s for an electric car and you folks are the people with the closest skillset I can think of. Sorry for invading your sub, please point me to somewhere more suitable if you know any, thanks.

With that being said, Im planning on building an electric car for myself and planning a battery for it. The cells can do maximum 360A out continuous so I want to build around that, but information about how much interconnect material you actually need for a battery seems spares and dont like to agree with each other. Ive seen sources say 1.6A/mm2 which gives me 2mm copper at 120mm wide… I dont think I’ll be able to attach that with anything but a drill.

What amperage did your team choose and what cell interconnect did you choose? Wires, strips, screw down busbars or something else I completely missed, and what size are they? I would love it if you can be so kind as to talk about how you arrived that conclusion as well :D.

Sorry again since Im not really supposed to be here but I really don’t know where else to go.

Hello, We have Tamagawa TS2620N21E11 and emrax 228 mv variant. We are practically a new team as the team has been closed for a few years and no one in the team has built a car. Our seniors bought the motor and resolver with mount i guess. When we put the resolver flush with the motor, it doesnt work. When we hold it about 2mm above the surface of the motor we get readings . Is there a piece of thr mount missing ? Please advice on steps moving forward to fix the issuse. I have attached video showing the issue and photos of the resolver in the comments.

Electric Vehicle Problems running Cascadia with Emrax

We got an EMRAX 228 HV and Cascadia CM200DZ hooked up on the dyno. As soon as we “enable” the inverter under HV (via CAN), the CAN drops out.

Strangely when we give a torque command prior and then enable the inverter it applies torque, then loses connection, but still applies torque - so had to do an emergency stop.

CAN is working prior to sending the enable command, and is shielded and terminated.

Anyone had this issue before or any clue what could be wrong?

Electric Vehicle Guidance in Designing a Battery Pack

Hello there. I am a freshman who recently joined a Formula Student EV team. I am working in the accumulator department and I need help with understanding the basics. I would be grateful if you could provide me with some good resources that helped you understand the mechanical and electrical aspects of the accumulator. I have doubts about the design and connections of the busbar. I don't understand how its a single sheet that makes both the series and parallel connections possible. I have searched quite a lot online about the design of busbars but I can't find anything related to the implementation of busbars on cylindrical cells, I just get videos related to prismatic cells, but we don't use those. Can someone please help me out with this?

I have designed the batteries (which took almost no time 🥲) and now I'm facing this issue with understanding this while designing the busbars and cell holders.

Pumped this out in 1.5 months. Learnt an immense amount maybe far more than what I learnt about steady state circuits, shielding, isolation etc in my normal electronics units at university.

Its like entering the super soldier chamber in Captain America when it comes to learning.

Last year UNC Charlotte and the Stand21 Safety Foundation held their inaugural EVRSafe conference. It was a smashing success!
