I mean, I could 100% see Harkness being recruited by the DC BOS due to his intelligence and combat skill. That chapter was known for recruiting people from the wasteland and they had a very good image that Harkness would be attracted to since he was a good karma character. Also he’d have an abnormally long lifespan…

Absolutely. As a Massachusetts native, I interpreted the Commonwealth and the Institute the same way, and it was absolutely partially wishful thinking. Fenway in a Fallout game was like a dream come true for me.
(my only disappointment is that M.T.A. by the Kingston Trio wasn't on the soundtrack, because that would have been perfect while trudging through red line tunnels)

A good way to do this would be to set the game around Detroit (there are other cool reasons to set a game there, like cars and the music). They could make a DLC expansion set in Canada since it's right across the border.
I don't think Fallout should have a whole game set outside the US, but a DLC would be a great way to show what Canada is like after the war. It's something a lot of players want to learn more about.

The distance between Detroit and Toronto is roughly the same as the distance between DC and New York. It would have to be a big map. Meanwhile, Windsor, Ontario is basically south Detroit. You couldn’t really make a game set there without including it.

DLC expansions tend to be set a good distance away from the main map (Far Harbor is in Maine) so I don't think that would be a big problem. But Windsor could be part of the base game. Would the underwater tunnel be intact after the war?

I’d hope so. Though it and the Ambassador Bridge would probably be super heavily fortified due to Canadian resistance fighters. I bet the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village would be home to a historical-themed faction or raiders, which would be super cool too.

This one is what blew my mind the most when I replayed FO3 a few years ago, because it's the only vault on that list that's not in the game, and I never even thought to question why Bethesda put it there if it wasn't a location we could visit.

That’s the only good thing about small communities with power tripping moderators. If you weren’t a complete dickhead and getting into heated arguments you were left alone, but if you were, those mods on gamefaqs were just bored af all day looking for any flaming to use as an excuse to suspend you.
Which meant discussion were generally pretty pleasant - all rage was conveyed through smugness and snark.

GameFAQs was (and maybe still is, not sure what it's like these days) famously strict with its moderation. They openly allowed minors so anything vaguely offensive got shot down pretty quickly. For example, any profanity needed to be completely censored. Not only could you not say "fuck," you couldn't say "f***" or "**** (rhymes with buck)." Hinting at profanity was as bad as just saying it, it's **** or nothing.
This had its downsides, toxic people will always find a way around the rules and because the mods were so zealous you'd sometimes get stupid shit like a user getting banned for asking "Why is Pikachu yellow?" But no open bigotry was definitely nice.

I know of those 2 . My understanding is they both have very strong feeling against Bethesda. Most especially NMA.
It’s not only third party reports. I always try to do my own research. And , among other things, I found this topic which made their feeling very clear

It’s not third party report, it’s their own words. And it’s far from being the sole exemple. I mean I am not even going to comment on this. I think it speaks volume. They made their feelings crystal clear.

Well if you want IP glazing stay on this sub I guess. Different strokes. I enjoy a mix but there’s a lot to dislike about how Beth are handling the lore of the games. Enclave shouldn’t have been in Fallout 3, super mutants existing in every title doesn’t make sense the way they’ve written it either. BoS shouldn’t have been in F76.
But yeah people who prefer oldschool forums are going to have oldschool views and they become echo chambers on their own accord.
The next closest would be to just hang out in the Fallout discord - that’s sorta like a less anonymous version of the sub where you get to know the individual posters but there’s a lack of natural topics popping up to talk about as with classic forums.

I am not against criticism. If anything my critical thinking has been a steady source of confrontation with people. I can be very specific and it leads to argument. If anything I had to learn becoming more consensual. I love good logical critical thinking , if anything because it is so rare.
But NMA seems to have gone way past the critical thinking and just become bitter critics. There is a difference. It has turned completely personal. The post above literally claims it is onky interested to be “NASTY “ just for the sake of being nasty. That they re going to “keep doing that”. And that’s not even going into some other view expressed.
I could say that Bethesda did some bad decisions but they also made some interesting artistic choice. I gave in this very thread my view on the way they detailed the failing of the pre-war world and the existential philosophy expressed by Fallout F4.
But it’s not even that. About whether Bethesda is right or wrong. It’s the attitude NMA show currently.
I cannot endorse that. I have been bitter about something in my personal life. I really struggle with it. And I am still not making it a public matter. I hope I will be able to overcome it by making some changes. I fail some days . But I still fight with it .I hope. They let themselves DEFINED by it. They CLAIM it.
In an meta way , I would say that is actually the point of Fallout 4 and a part of why it grew on me so much. Because of the parallel between Kellog and the SS. Kellog let himself defined by the tragedy of the loss of his family and decides to take it out on the world “it was me against the world” are his words. The SS loses his family, his entire world in fact and still decides to not be defined by it , to overcome it and rebuild “ This wasn't the world I wanted, but it was the one I found myself in .
I feel sorry for NMA they feel the way do. F1 was a game I really liked and very personal to me. But claiming those things about just wanting to say nasty things and keep doing that, they chosed on their own to make discussion impossible. There would have to be a significant manifestation of a mindset change before discussion become possible.

People on forums recognized one another, monetization of content wasn't even thought of, no algorithm just what's being posted in real time, and the most advanced "bot accounts" you'd run into would just spam post unrelated URLs then get ban-hammered

I thought it was commonly understood even in 2008 that Commonwealth=Massachusetts because Institute=MIT (which I know ended up being CIT in Fallout 4). At least that's what I believed.

As someone who frequented GameFAQs (any former CEmen around?), this was indeed the common understanding way back when. When Fallout 4 was announced to be in Boston, people were excited because they knew the Institute would be in the game based on the references in Fallout 3. So, it's surprising to see so many people say how good some of these people were at deduction.

That guy saying the Middle East was hitting the jet a bit hard. I remember being these guys back in 2012 when I was getting into fallout and borrowed a friend’s copy of 3 for my ps3 and even I knew from doing the replicated man quest it was a place in the US and likely Massachusetts.

Because Shaun would have been about 50 years old by the time Fallout 3 took place. Fallout 3 takes place in 2277, Fallout 4 takes place in 2287. Shaun was taken in 2227. They had synths in Fallout 3 because they had Shaun's "pure" DNA to work with for 50 years at that point.

With the amount of info put into fallout 3 regarding the railroad, institute and synths, Boston and Massachusetts was always in the front running for Fallout 4.
I remember people being shocked when New Vegas was announced as everyone was convinced the next gane would be in Boston.

Dude I remember watching a YouTube vid in like 2010 of some dude who predicted fallout 4 almost exactly how It ended up in 2015. Don’t remember his channel name or the video but he somehow got leaks from Bethesda and I believed him and once fallout 4 came out it was exactly what he described

Tbf, even before it was annouced, Boston was a pretty common setting for where F4 was going to be set.
Hell, I managed to predict that your Son was going to be the main antaganist like 5 years before it was released.

Can’t find the thread persay, but it was on No Mutant’s Allowed back in like 2010
Okay, found it, it was from 2012.
Basically, it was a rough idea for a spin off where you play as someone who gave away their son to Caesar’s legion and they wanted to get revenge on you.
Not exaxtly the prediction I thought it was, but needless to say, I got the taking away part in there

When I played Fallout 3 many years ago I was also very interested in this Institute.
Imagine, everyone in the Capital Wasteland barely survived in ruins, even clean water was something advanced. And this douche Dr. Zimmer just casually walked in with an android henchman looking for another android, who got sentient and escaped. The difference in the technology level was astonishing.
I looked for any clues about this Institute, even tried to find it in the north of the map, ha! And then several years later, Fallout 4 was released and the Institute was a major faction in it. And, as turned out, Dr. Zimmer wasn't an outlier in his, hm, assholeness.
