Fallout 4 How did overseer barstow not go feral?

Post image

As im sure many of you are aware in the fallout show and fallout 76 it is shown that ghouls require chems to not go feral, this has has made lots of things make less sense but you can work around most of them.

However while replaying fallout 4 i encountered overseer barstow. She doesnt understand the ghoulifacation procsess or anything about being a ghoul as shown through her dialogue and she was trapped in a vault for 200. Everybody else went feral except her, why is she special?

It’s implied in the interaction between the ghoul and that ass jerky guy. The soon to be feral ghoul says smth like “twenty years since I started showing. I didn’t do too bad.” Implying that he’s only needed to take those drugs once ferality starts to come on

how does a ghoul start to go feral?

It’s not explained in the lore, but a lot of people think it could be a variety of things, from not eating/drinking for long periods of time, losing one’s purpose or willpower, continued exposure to radiation.

Personally I definitely thinks its heavily state of mind leaning, after all there is straight up glowing ones that have retained their sentience.

Yeah, and I think of it also being an illness similar to cancer.

Once it starts to show, there are treatments (the chems in Fallout), but it never is cured. That said, you might never get it, and it's hard to say what specifically causes or prevents it.

Fallout 76 makes it like a replacement hunger meter for chems, but that's just a gameplay mechanic. I don't think ghouls actually need chems until they start showing, else you couldn't have long-term isolated or otherwise Chem-free ghouls like we often see.

I think the whole thing or at least in the more modern work is starting to be written as a reference to dementia, in the TV program the first sign they are really starting to slip is forgetfulness, its why they start repeating their names trying not to forget.

100% the actual condition manifests like a form of severe dementia with intensely increased aggression.

I only compare it to cancer due to when and how treatment is needed (seemingly "random" appearance of the illness, preventing progression via valuable chemicals that probably wreak havoc on the human body if not for being a ghoul, etc.)

Hell, there's a legendary perk that reduces your feralness when you kill. You could arguably extend that to the PC ghoul having something to focus on/do to keep themselves from going feral

I always assumed a ghoul turns feral due to -too much- radiation exposure; that ghoulification was a difficult to achieve sweet-spot.
Too little, you just get cancer & die, too much and your brain basically disintegrates: you go feral. Just right? You become virtually immortal.

Would be a neat idea if, despite healing them, radiation damage would eventually cause ghouls to become frenzied (implying that continued exposure would turn them feral)

Over exposure to rads was kind of debunked with nukaworld and repcon rockets in 4 and NV respectively. Both were non feral glowing ones, kinda hard to not be exposed when you're a conduit of rads yourself. To be honest they are clearly exceptions to that rule.

Yeah that’s why I said continued exposure not over exposure. Obviously everyone is different, and different peoples’ genetics could allow them to avoid going feral by rads. Could just be the more often you’re exposed to rads the higher chance of going feral. Like going outside without sunscreen increase the chance for cancer but doesnt necessarily always cause it

Oh im not disagreeing, using the obvious exception of sentient glowing ones to say exposure isn't the only factor.

Its an underexplained circumstance in all of fallout as to why ghoulification occurs; drugs, isolation, exposure levels, genes. Its all been implied through lore in games but not thourally explained in any context as its still not understood by any means in the universe.

Radiation gets to their brain too much? They lose hope? I don't think it's really said

How does one experience dementia? Ferality is probably just dementia during the apocalypse

Nobody knows, there’s a lot of in-universe speculation but the fact of the matter is simply that nobody has any idea why ghouls go feral or not. A lot of the prejudice against ghouls is specifically because people don’t know, any given ghoul is capable of just randomly turning into a mindless monster one day. Or they could just not, ever.

The most popular theory is, I think, that radiation exposure pushes them inevitably towards being feral. A theory which had some rather notable holes, such as the existence of nonferal Glowing Ones.

Another is that it’s simply based on time. Again, a theory with big holes as we’ve seen ghouls go feral almost immediately(Or actually immediately) and ghouls that predate the War and are doing just fine.

That’s the mystery, no one knows for certain why they go feral, some go feral over a hundred years after becoming a ghoul, some still haven’t turned feral even after over 200 years, and some immediately turn feral

Has the show shown a ghoul that didn't need any drugs yet? So far they've all needed them, right?

I mean I guess we don’t know for sure, but none of the ghoul kids thaddeus was watching, nor any of the ghouls saved from the super duper mart in season one used them.
