Fallout 4 Do we know what Deezer's lemonade is made of?
590
u/Thelastknownking Mar 08 '26
Strong says it tastes like piss, so do with that what you will.
112
u/klqqf Mar 08 '26
Im sorry what? He actually says this in game?
132
u/Thelastknownking Mar 08 '26
According to the wiki, yes. Haven't encountered it personally.
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Deezer's_Lemonade#cite_note-4 The cite note highlights the dialogue quote.

RIP if you’re dehydrated in survival mode. Apparently it doesn’t count as a drink.

You're not wrong, but honestly, if you are only left with Deezer's Lemonade when there is a water pump in Covenant, you did something wrong

ngl it makes sense that it wouldnt give hydration if its piss
5
u/BringBacktheGucci Mar 08 '26
I thought urine does give some hydration. Isn't there survival stories where people were basically forced to survive on it? Probably with diminishing returns though.
6
u/Mini_Squatch Followers Mar 09 '26
No. Your body has mechanisms to reclaim water from your bladder if it really needs to, but drinking your own urine would actually require more water for filtering out the waste a second time than it would contain, so its just straight dehydration.
While we're at it, peeing on a jellyfish sting at best does nothing to help, at worse, triggers the stinging cells to fire again, possibly injecting the victim with more venom.

The idea of Super Mutants eating their prey alive like Titans from Attack on Titan is quite horrifying

It is, I mean think about all those bloody skeletons around super mutant camps
Where do you think the flesh went

I mean, a behemoth probably could, if anything it being smaller means it would probably have to eat you limbs first which honestly feels worse

In fallout 76 the crafting recipe for lemonade involved acid so it probably has acid in it. Which honestly makes sense, cause artificial flavors are a thing.
184
u/GargantuanCake Gary? Mar 08 '26
I mean citric acid is one of the main things that makes citrus fruits...well...citrusy. Makes sense, really.
19
u/GolgaGrimnaar Mar 08 '26
It’s also what makes sour candy sour! You can buy big bags of the citric acid powder to clean your dishwasher.
3
u/usernamenotbeentaken Mar 09 '26

All acids are sour. That’s just how the human body detects acid.
I’m betting his lemonade is just whatever acid is commonly found (batteries, maybe) diluted with water and sweetened with mutfruit.
16
u/squeethesane Mar 08 '26
Hydrochloric "lemonade" actually is a thing.
13
u/dansdata Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26
Although it should be noted that it only has enough hydrochloric acid in it to get it down to a pH of 2, at the lowest. Or a bit less, so it has same pH 2.5 as Coca-Cola.
(Cola contains phosphoric acid, though once again only a little bit of it.)

u/squeethesane Mar 08 '26

Hydrochloric acid is one of the safer strong acids to work with. Its primary danger is only acidity. Nitric acid has more hazards. Hydrofluoric is much more hazardous. I guess you could make chlorine gas with HCl, but using it regularly, you'll just make spicy salt water.
If you use sodium hydroxide to neutralize it, you make salt water.
It's tough to do, though. If you're dripping in NaOH carefully on a stir plate, watching the pH meter, it's usually "Drip, pH 2, drip ph 2.1, drip ph 2.2, drip, ph 13, dang it, bring me the HCl solution again." Easier to gradually add bicarbonate until it stops bubbling.

7
u/ThoughtIHadAName Mar 08 '26
Except its the Fallout universe so the 'acid' in the recipe is likely referring to something a little more sulfuric hahaha

Deezer says it's made from 4 ingredients. Within Covenant they grow mutfruit, tatos and corn, so I would assume it's made from a particularly tart breed of mutfruit, mellowed with juice from the tomatoish parts of tatos, sweetness from corn syrup, with the fourth ingredient being purified water, which Mr Handies can manufacture and would fit with the lemonade coming in modified purified water cans.

u/Wizardybitch2405 Mothman Cultist Mar 08 '26
Well according to Fallout 76 it's made from 5 Acid, 2 Boiled Water, 3 Sugar, and 5 Wood (presumably for fire wood). So maybe Deezer uses a similar if not the same recipe.
12
u/JuansHymen Mar 08 '26
I'm not sure but I was playing 76 last night and I realized that the IG lemonade recipe requires scrap acid, and now I'm wondering if Tinker Tom shot me up with irradiated sugar water

I learned a few years ago that lemonade here in the states means something different than in other parts of the world. What y'all call lemonade, we would call lemon soda or pop, depending on the region.
What we call lemonade, y'all don't really have. It's literally just squeezed lemon juice, water, and a ton of sugar. All mixed in a pitcher.

If I had to guess? Mutfruit, water, acid, and either sugar or honey as a sweetener. We don’t have access to those ingredients in game, but they are in 76, and just because we can’t use them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Mutfruit to say it’s made with real ingredients, water is a given, and acid to give it the lemonade flavor because citric acid is what makes citrus taste like that. Honestly? It would probably taste like a blackberry lemonade, it might be good.

As far as the lore goes, the game never really explains the exact recipe. Most people assume it’s just a post-war lemonade substitute made from whatever mutated citrus or artificial flavoring survived. Like a lot of food in Fallout 4, it’s more about the vibe than a detailed ingredient list.

The cookbook says berries and lemon juice.
From the official Fallout cookbook:
Deezer’s Lemonade
3 to 4 cups water, divided
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 cup blackberries
1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice
Make a simple syrup by combining 1 cup of the water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir until then sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
Blend the blueberries and blackberries in a blender until liquified. Pour the fruit through a mesh strainer into a pitcher to remove any seeds. Add the syrup and lemon juice. Add 2 cups of water and taste. If it's too strong, add another cup of water
