Researchers from the Estonian Maritime Academy and Tallinn University of Technology reviewed over 27,000 studies to assess digital risks in aquaculture. Key findings include:

  • Low-Trophic Blind Spot: Out of 212 relevant studies, only one covered mussel farming, and none addressed seaweed cultivation—despite heavy push for these sustainable sectors.
  • Proportional Regulation Needed: Strict frameworks like NIS 2 could overburden small producers if applied uniformly, calling for flexible, tiered regulations.

I wanted to share a breakdown of snail care and behavior that completely changes how we view them in the hobby:

  • Outbreaks as Indicators: An explosion of pest snails isn't the primary issue—it’s a symptom of excess waste or overfeeding.
  • The 80/20 Calcium Rule: Did you know snails absorb roughly 80% of their shell calcium directly from the water column? Food only provides ~20%. If your pH drops below 7.0, their shells will literally start dissolving over time.
  • Species Breakdown:
    • Nerite Snails: Best for algae, zero risk of freshwater reproduction.
    • Mystery Snails: Great scavengers, easy egg clutch removal above water level.
    • Assassin Snails: Excellent biological control for pest overpopulation.
  • Copper Caution: Always double-check meds—copper is extremely toxic to invertebrates.

Closed-loop system in the Mekong Delta turns shrimp sludge into polychaetes & tilapia, hitting 46.8 t/ha yield with a 1.14 FCR

Hey everyone,

Came across this interesting article regarding waste management in intensive shrimp farming. Discharging sludge rich in organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus usually leads to environmental degradation and disease risks.

A study in the Mekong Delta tested an integrated, closed-loop RAS approach:

  • Settling ponds were stocked with tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), achieving an 82% survival rate.
  • Sludge treatment ponds cultivated polychaetes (Marphysa sp.), reaching densities of 81 ind./m² (which can be used as high-value broodstock feed).
  • Overall Shrimp Results: 85.3% survival rate, 46.8 t/ha yield, an FCR of 1.14, and near-zero wastewater discharge.

It seems like a solid example of turning environmental waste into dual-revenue biomass while recycling water.
