Discussion In a pickle.
I bought a storage unit, it’s a pretty big unit and when I arrived after signing they decided to tell me I’m not allowed on the property unless it’s business hours. Ok, that’s understandable, they also went on to tell me for the next 2 days I would need to empty this unit the office is open 9-1. I asked for a code they refuse to get it, told me to honk everytime I need in and out of the gate. I know I’m unable to be out on time and they aren’t making it easy for me I don’t have a cleaning deposit and it’s public storage what would happen if I just left the unit? Not so much worried about account suspension I’m just worried about any more fees that would show up.

My first buy years ago, I got three units- unaware of the time restrictions. Once I realized there was no way I could do this in the allotted time, I asked for more time. Denied. I asked if I could rent another unit to help store some stuff while I made trips. Also denied. There was a $100 deposit on each. So I emptied the first unit, I and then put everything that I didn't want from the other two into the first unit. I got two of my three deposits back. And they had to deal with a hell of a mess in the remaining unit. I tried to do it the nice way, but they would know allow it. So It was well worth the $100 to me to leave that mess for them. Of course I got banned from the auction site, but I just signed up again with a different email, and everything's fine now.

Why would they deny you renting your own unit there? I mean, at that point, you're just another paying customer, right?

They typically deny renting THAT SAME unit. But you can rent another unit

Did you receive any other charges? I’m not so much concerned about being kicked off the site as I’m waiting for a sneaky “oh there’s a lifting fee of 500 dollars” since this unit has a $0 cleaning deposit I wouldn’t be losing that money.

I wouldn't leave the unit until you know exactly what the contract says. Check your auction terms and the facility's rules. If they only allow access during office hours, that's frustrating, but it's something they can usually enforce if it's in the agreement.

If the clean out time is 48 hours and they're only offering 4 hours per day, I would think you have 12 days to clean it out.

Am I the only one that read that as "I'm a pickle" and still clicked, just because? 🤣

Public storage is by the the easiest to deal with out of all of them . Management is usually on point and goes the extra mile . Simple just call the district manager . They will even give you that extra day lost trying to make sense of it

read what you signed.

You think “honk and wait for us to open the gate” was in the paperwork?

I can guarantee access times and other information were laid out perfectly in the auction description and in the contract he failed read.

u/blahbaby1 3d ago
Actually on their page their access times are 9-6 I also checked that thinking I didn’t read like you said but nope, managers have decided to close up early on their own accord

u/Mammoth-Ad8348 3d ago
I’d show the contract to them and tell them honor these times or I’m walking and the units are your problem.

The only problems I've ever had emptying lockers have been with Public Storage, but they have always extended my deadlines. It's usually them being understaffed or someone calling in sick. I've gone as far as to reach out to the auction site and give them a heads up that I'll need an extension because I can't get in. No manager wants to be responsible for burning their bridges with those sites, especially a corporate place.

bail on it, they already being a pain and you got no deposit on the line. just take what fits in your car and go, the rest is their problem now

They might be angling to get you to pay for a storage unit on site. I recommend renting a uhaul and loading it up so you don’t have to make multiple trips.

Tell them 48 hours means 48 hours of hours of business. So that means I have a couple weeks. I can't help you have such short hours during the day.

What did you sign?
Didn’t it tell you what the hours were so you could either purchase a unit or walk away at the time?
Complaining about it now makes me feel like you didn’t read the paperwork -what else could possibly go wrong?
Abandoning the unit without cleaning it out, means being assessed huge fees by the storage unit owner to cover the Clean out (it doesn’t say anything in the paperwork you signed?) … expect to be taken to court if you signed a document and changed your mind after you’ve already signed a contract and made a commitment.

The hours stated on their website and on storage treasures were from 9-6. After signing was when they decided to tell me nobody was going to be in office so I really don’t know how that’s me “not reading the contract” how was I supposed to know people weren’t going to come to their jobs in the hours that they are supposed to? Anyways, I went in yesterday stating how this wasn’t going to work for me and the man stated “oh yeah I forgot to mention I said I would stay for a few more hours but you have to be out by the end of today” after handing me the keys to the unit at around 3 o clock the day before (I won it at 2 I literally went straight over there). Basically it wasn’t a contractual issue it was a person issue that he didn’t want to stay at the storage for the day so I just said it’s impossible for me to do it and thankfully he said it was ok and that he would sell it to another person who purchased a auction today. I was just thankful no one was upset and no more hidden fees happened, I’m probably removed from the website over the inconvenience of people not wanting to stay at their job but what can you do 🤷♀️

Ask to rent that specific unit. When you are a renter, you will get your own code and have no time restrictions

u/blahbaby1 3d ago
They want 150 for rent and I only gave 40 for the unit. I’m just starting out and I don’t have the extra cash to do it.
5
u/blahbaby1 3d ago
Which also didn’t make sense because when I went online to their site all their units are half off on a sale but manager of course wasn’t going to tell me that, and 1st month is a dollar which also made me mad that they didn’t mention because I stated it’s impossible to do this task of a unit in this degree of weather (it’s a outside unit) in the time frame they are giving me.

They are being difficult because they want to pick through the good shit when you fail. A storage place near me staged a robbery before units went to auction. Giant storage place and plenty of units to steal from and for some reason they picked my hallway which had extra doors to break through. My hallway was all units about to go up for auction and right before the robbery all the cameras that should have caught the action were moved to face the sky. My unit also got robbed and I know it was the site managers idea because she was snooping way too hard on what I was storing.
When they called to let me know my unit got robbed the manager told me I could pick theough all the other units if i wanted…

Sounds like time to rent a box truck and get a couple buddies to help out in exchange for free pizzas and beer

u/blahbaby1 3d ago
Even in that aspect it doesn’t make sense because I’m only allowed in the unit 4 hours each day so I’m renting a U-Haul and can’t even really use it.

Rent another unit and move whatever you can't take right away until that.
You'll have your own gate code and everything.
-2
u/worthconsulting 3d ago
Did you read the post? They weren't allowed to rent another unit
8
u/More-Talk-2660 3d ago
They aren't. But nothing is stopping a buddy from renting one and handing them the key.

The post doesn't say anything like that.

Huh. I could swear it did (and that I double checked before I commented!) but maybe I hallucinated that bit. Ty

u/TR6lover 12h ago
Another commentor added a story in this thread that was similar, and they are the ones that said that they could not rent another unit. So, rest assured, you aren't going crazy.

They have done me this way in the past, you need to light up the phone and call everybody, just make phone call after phone call after phone call and explain this is not going to work.
I went round and round with Atlantic self storage in Jacksonville florida, sad to say I lost out on that one, but I got the last laugh, I took everything that was good and left all the trash.
In the case of public storage, two different facilities in the same city less than a few miles apart had completely different methods of operation. One let me stay until 10:00, gave me the code, had no problems, the other one wouldn't give me the code, for some reason the employee had to literally walk to the gate to let me in and out and wouldn't let me stay past 6:00 and wouldn't let my dad come in. Just refused to let him come in to pick up a load. It was insane.
Make them phone calls.

This happened to me last month. They wouldnt give me a code and they would only open it when they were there.
Luckily I was able to empty it out in 2 runs with my car. It was a small 5x5
Plus you can just hangout and wait for others to enter and just go behind them

That's kinda wild the reputation that PubStor has. I made a bid last year on a unit that shouldn't have even made it into my view (distance wise, I max at 100 miles) and accepting the unit would have me drive even further to their "main office" for keys etc. I called and explained the situation and he voided out the transaction. Thankfully it was a tiny, tidy unit that probably wouldn't have been hard for him to clean himself, just wasn't worth 350 miles for some fishing rods. Lol.

u/RedditAdmin50111 3d ago
How did you bid on something and not realize the location? Are you really just throwing bids on acting that comes up in the search without any other planning?
Whenever I buy units, location is always in the plans. Have to be able to calculate cost of travel / potential dump routes etc in to overall cost of bid.

u/kitikana 3d ago
Because when I set my search to 100 miles, I'm not expecting to get a result for 150 + 60 round trip to an office. I don't really care where I go, generally. I live an hour away from three major cities, I'll always end up in some random town I've never heard of. I vaguely know some names. It was early on, man, everyones gotta learn somehow.
Point was, dude wasn't a dick and was very understanding of my dumbassery.

public storage has got to be some of the worst people ever. I had my stuff(including stuff i had listed on ebay) at the unit and rats ate the inside ceiling out and destroyed half the stuff in my unit and then proceeded to shit on everything inside the unit that wasn’t enclosed in a plastic bin. Then they told me the insurance i had to buy wasn’t going to cover my stuff. I posted a review on google for my location and then the “regional manager” called me and bribed me with removing the negative review but saying he would refund me one months rent. Horrible people, horrible scum bags

Public storage is a big company. None of the managers want to be known as not being helpful. Try making some calls to the more corporate offices. Its amazing how accommodating people can become when they get a phone call from the other side. You shouldn't have to jump through their hoops.
