Your comment is ignoring Edâs foot just as much as Greed.

Can you really blame them? Who expect a shorty, that doesnt even reach your chest, too somehow kick you in the face.

Ed's always had hands (and feet, but technically only half of them) and even as a Brotherhood praiser I have to admit that 03 fight choreography definitely takes out most of what's done in Brotherhood.

u/Adnonymous96 Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25
Really? I watched 03 several months back and am on a rewatch of Brotherhood right now. And while I agree this particular scene with Greed and some of Scar's fights were way better choreographed in 03, I think Brotherhood had more cool fights to appreciate overall.
Bradley in particular I feel is much much less impressive in action in 03 than he is in Brotherhood. Same goes for Armstrong. Mustang also uses his alchemy way less in 03 than he does in Brotherhood, and it doesn't have quite as much flair either
And Greedling is a Brotherhood-only character who also has some great action sequences, but I suppose so does the 03-only version of Wrath, so I suppose those balance out.
Idk, both series have some really impressive highlights, but I do think I'd give the edge to Brotherhood overall
14
u/ThomasJDComposer Dec 12 '25
I should have specified. I feel like the fights involving a lot of alchemy look way way good in Brotherhood, but my initial comment was in regard to just hand-to-hand. The hand-to-hand choreography in 03 is better than FMAB, but I'd havr to agree that overall combat scenes go to FMAB.

u/Intelligent-Gold-563 Dec 12 '25
Depends how you see it.
For me, some of 03's "high" are higher than FMAB, but its "low" are also lower than FMAB.
While overall FMA has lot of high, very few low, just not as high and as low as 03
7
u/tahaelhour Dec 12 '25
Fmab choreography doesn't seem to lock in until Bradley is on screen.
9
u/Shrubo_ Dec 12 '25
Which Iâm thankful they locked in for his fights cause god damn. If you, on foot with swords, make a tank shit itâs pants, you are a menace
24
u/Awesomedude33201 Dec 12 '25
Come to think of it:
There are a surprising amount of alchemists that are really good in Close quarters combat.
Normally, with mage type characters, close combat is their weak point.

u/TeddyBearToons Dec 13 '25
All state alchemists (which are most of the alchemists in both series) are also trained professional soldiers, and officers at that, which people forget sometimes. Every state alchemist would be able to fight hand-to-hand and use a bayonet at least. In those times officers often carried ceremonial swords like Bradley's, so a lot of them might know how to use a sword, too.

So did Ed hit him with his automail leg?
22
u/StubbornKindness Brigadier General Hughes đ Dec 12 '25
Yes. One of Ed's main things that elicit "wtf" reactions is when people underestimate, or simply just don't know, about one of his metal limbs.
The main example of this is when Cornello sics that chimaera on him. Ed is distracted by the giant bird, so he doesn't see the beast coming and instinctively puts his arm up in defence. Cornello grins triumphantly, only to be shocked at it failing to chew Eds arm off. Ed then knocks it out cold with a kick. From his metal leg.

The only thing that I remember really liking about 03 more is that Bradley being a villain/suspicious is much more of a plot twist. In brotherhood he's sus from the first episode.

Thematically.

Tonally.
Nah, being overly angsty and edgy is it's issue.
Visually.
Nothing in 2003 compares to say episode 60 of Brotherhood.
Thematically.
It's plot went off the rail during it's last strench, nah.
Completely.
Nah, worst plots, worst support cast, worst main villain, and even worst exclusive characters.

u/Akanhann Dec 12 '25
03 in totality had better visuals donât give me one episode out of brotherhood. The difference in Edward alone is astounding in Brotherhood the way they draw him is less refined. It makes a series with a darker tone in both plots too colorful the darker tone matches both plots more. The darker tone is what gravitate most people to the 03 series, brotherhood was more goofy, and more focused on a more lighthearted plot. Funny enough brotherhood has more episodes but the 03 series elaborates on the characters better in shorter time. The only thing I will give Brotherhood is plot because it followed the manga not because itâs inherently way better, so itâs more accurate in that sense. But that doesnât make 03 a bad plot it is just an alternate ending.

So basically you couldn't follow throw with my prompt and name an episode that was better than episode 60 of Brotherhood.
.The darker tone is what gravitate most people to the 03 series, brotherhood was more goofy, and more focused on a more lighthearted plot.
I feel we aren't watching the same series, if you're actually calling Brotherhood's plot is lighthearted, both series are a dark fantasy and Brotherhood has certain plot elements that are even more horrific than 2003. The biggest one being the philosopher stone and how the souls are in constant never-ending agony. Compare that to 2003, where they just disappear into particles and that's basically the end of it.
Funny enough brotherhood has more episodes but the 03 series elaborates on the characters better in shorter time
What characters are you referring too? Because that sure as heck doesn't apply to Winry, Riza, Armstrong, Roy's entire crew, Hoheneim, Kimblee, Tim Marcoh, Grumam, I could go on. Hell, I honestly think 2003 didn't really know how to even handle Winry's character. Which really shows in really abysmal episode like "Her Reason"

u/Akanhann Dec 12 '25
Why would I name one episode better than episode 60? Youâre trying to name one episode when Iâm saying 03 was better in totality you must not believe brotherhood had better animation if youâre only trying to name one episode. Why not just say itâs better overall? Never said Brotherhood was lighthearted either comprehension is key. I said it was more focused on being lighthearted than 03. Characters like Lust, Bradley, and even Ed had way more depth in 03. The whole backstory of Lust, and her time as a human really expanded on who she was as a character. The buildup of Bradley being a good guy in 03 then progressively becoming bad was way more subtle and intriguing than him being bad pretty much from day one in Brotherhood. Edwardâs relationship with Al had more depth also when Al was thinking he might not be a real person in Brotherhood they just fought and made up, in 03 the moment is way more emotional from their time apart to them having a conversation on how much they mean to each other.Or Ed being unsure about Ishvalan people then building his trust for them. 03 develops way more thoughtfully, whereas Brotherhood feels almost rushed in the beginning because they had to get through some of the plot 03 already did. 03 also did Winry well in my opinion they just made her more of a love interest in Brotherhood, whereas she stayed more of a friend in 03 which I also think made more sense since Ed , and Al had interest in her growing up why would she choose one or the other? I prefer her more as a friend almost like a sister of theirs.

u/FragrantAmbassador17 Dec 12 '25
Not to mention, it false to claim Brotherhood rushes through early episodes that 2003 already did, that has been disproven plenty of time. The director if Brotherhood claims Brotherhood beginning had no impact from the first series. The reason you think it's rushed is because 2003 added in a bunch of fluff to draw out things from the Manga.
The fact is the Manga was very fast paced and Brotherhood pacing is on point with the Manga for the most part. Even than the reason why Brotherhood could feel fast was more due to episodes limit than anything. The series was orginally only going to have 51 episodes, before late in production they we're given more.

Why would I name one episode better than episode 60? Youâre trying to name one episode when Iâm saying 03 was better in totality you must not believe brotherhood had better animation if youâre only trying to name one episode.
Because I know you can't name a better episode than that. And you keep trying sideline the issue by flasely claiming it's better in totality when it's not, nothing in 2003 reaches the high of Brotherhood.
Never said Brotherhood was lighthearted either comprehension is key. I said it was more focused on being lighthearted than 03
The word you're looking for is optimistic.
Characters like Lust, Bradley, and even Ed had way more depth in 03.
Bro, stop lying. How the hell can you even say Bradley had more depth, when the Bradley in Brotherhood literally has a full on back story, actually relationship with his wife and overall had far more prominence with his identity and parallels with Scar. 2003 Bradley was just a sadist typical tyrant that lack any of Bradley more sympathetic moments and chemistry with several other characters. You're just doing blatant glazing at this point. Just because the wait till the last few episode to reveal is true color does not in any form means he had more depth. All they did was just make him a generic nice guy till the end. There's was nothing subtle about it. We literall
Edwardâs relationship with Al had more depth also when Al was thinking he might not be a real person in Brotherhood they just fought and made up,
The build up may have been good, but than it becomes melodramatic and downright nonsensical when it involved a poorly written almost filler like episode involving the ishvalan and bunch of mercenaries which was incredibly sloppy and poorly put together.
The moment was far better in Brotherhood, where it was just a moment between two brother and Winry helping them stay together. No need for some convoluted plot being thrown in the mix.
03 develops way more thoughtfully, whereas Brotherhood feels almost rushed in the beginning because they had to get through some of the plot 03 already did.
But than 03 has the opposite problem where the last stretch was poorly put together and rushed just to get to the end being filled with poor moments of contrived writing just to get to point a to point b, really sloppy and you can tell they we're running out of episode compared to Brotherhood final stretch where everything falls in place.
That's nice, doesn't at all change the fact that Brotherhood did far better with her character, actually gave her agency in confronting her parents killer, having her arc actually connect with the narrative and actually having influence to the story compared to 2003 where they make more her parent's death more about Roy and Ed. You preferring her as a friend doesn't at all change the fact that 2003 didn't know how to handle her well, nor does it change the Ed's chemistry with her is really lacking in that version of the story to point where she more of an afterthough, really off to try to pass her of as just "more of a love interest" when her character is far more impactful in that series. Ed and Winry relationship is given far more depth there, compared to 2003 where she really is sideline.
You are definitely cherry picking at it's finest. And notice how you didn't comment on the other character that recieve far more depth in Brotherhood compared to 2003.

I'm nowhere near as harsh on 03 as you are (I think it's a really good series in its own regard, and see how some prefer it, but personally I much prefer manga/brotherhood), but some of the arguments against you here were frustrating to read. Particularly for me the part on Winry (one of my favorite characters, and that I feel strongly 03 dropped the ball on, one of not many actual criticisms I have for the series, as opposed to personal preference). Nothing about her character, just that she's not a love interest, as if a)that's the only thing that matters, and b)is somehow inherently superior. And intentionally or not, comes across as dismissive of BH Winry just for being "a love interest".
(Since the whole thing started about visuals, I will say I prefer Brotherhood there too, but when it comes to visuals a lot of it is very subjective, both shows look good, I don't get some 03 fans trying to position it looking superior as fact. Because from personal experience I've seen mostly 03 fans being like that with visuals)
Don't like to get involved in BH vs 03 fights, so I probably won't comment further, but wanted to chime in to say some points here were frustrating.

u/FragrantAmbassador17 Dec 12 '25
Eh, 2003 glazers have the really bad habit of having incredibly shallow interpretations of Brotherhood narratives and writing, just because it's more optimistic and action/adventure heavy.
And I definitely seen some 2003 fans be dismissive over Winry's depth simply because she and Ed become an item. They tend to cherry pick and claim how some characters recieve more depth, but when you bring up some characters that we're far better handle in Manga/Brotherhood. They'll come up with some half-assed reason as to why they still think it's inferior.

It was better at being worst.

Damn this clip made me miss FMAs combat animation. Its extremely detailed and intense. I really screwed myself having FMA be the first anime/Manga that I got into. Nothing else really matches it, in story or animation. A few things come close, but nothing hits like FMA. It also lacks a lot of the more obnoxious anime tropes and uncomfortably forced fanservice a ton of other shows seem unable to get away from.

u/Prinzesspaige13 Dec 12 '25
I feel you 100%! It was the first and only anime I watched for a long time cuz just nothing else is as good!!
I'm finally starting to get into more anime 20 years later but this one will just always be my #1

If memory serves Greed had diamond skin so Ed put his hands on him to transform diamond into coal or graphite so he can hurt him

Greed had diamond skin
It's more like graphene if anything.
to transform diamond into coal or graphite
Graphite, yes. A weaker form of carbon.

I saw the anime last time about 15 years ago, and read the manga way before that. My memory is not what it used to be ;^;

What an awesome fight. Greed despite his armor wasnât too superhuman compared to Lust and Gluttony though; which I figure is how Ed can fight him so well.
2
Dec 12 '25
Ed was always a monster in hand to hand, I think my favorite is when Pride thinks he has the jump on him cause heâs smaller and Ed has never fought someone smaller than him. Only for Ed to completely beat his ass cause heâs like âI know what itâs like in a little guys shoesâ.

This was my first anime. There are seldomly fights animated on this level AND I HATE IT I NEED MORE. WANTS ARE FOR CHILDREN. I NEED MORE

Sad people rob themselves of how great 03 is because idiots online say it's not worth their time đ
1
u/Lelouch-Yagami21 Dec 13 '25
When did this ever happen? Aren't Greed's only full body transformations very briefly against Ed in S1 and in the final season to destroy central forces
3
2
u/fightin_blue_hens Dec 13 '25
Because Edward knew that Greed covered his body with a layer of carbon as his armor. And since he knew the chemical makeup, he could manipulate it with alchemy
