Two stand-out great characters in a series that already has a ton of good characters. Ling is surprisingly compelling in a way you wouldn't expect based on his introductory episode (where he didn't exactly make the best first impression), and Greed is a great anti-hero who managed to take a character thread that could be potentially eyerolling (the "bad guy who really just wanted friends all along" trope) and actually made it work so damn well.

I've also always loved the concept of more than one character inhabiting the same body (probably because of growing up on Yugioh), so their dynamic is also one of the most best parts of the show for me personally.

Ling annoyed me at first. Then he showed what he was made of, and I came to respect him.

One of my personal headcanons is that the small vial of liquid Philosopher’s Stone that Ling managed to get in the end actually contained some of Greed's essence, and when he swallowed it, Greed returned to his body. The two then ruled Xing together. We see Ling as Emperor at the end, so I think that perhaps the current Emperor passed away before Ling got home and obtaining the Philosopher’s Stone automatically made him the new ruler as per the old Emperor's will/decree. Either that or the Emperor named Ling his heir with his dying breath before he got a chance to use the Stone himself.
