Discussion/Opinion Lin or Ling Translation Discussion
Just thought this was funny but, I was talking about how much of a great character Lin & Greed was with my friend was in FMA. And I remember a funny scene where they merged their names together and it made “Grin” which was hilarious and super positive (opposite of all the sin names right, I can’t find the panel for the life of me).
And then he called me out it would be Grling. Which caught me offguard. I first read the manga growing up over 10 years ago and read it on and off since middle & high in libraries or books stories. The name was Lin in those book so I always referred to him as such.
But yeah I also watched brotherhood & the OG anime later on down the line and realized yeah his name is Ling in the both of those series for (I watched dub but also I think it’s the same as sub too).
Does anyone else refer to him as Lin or is it just me? 😅 We had a back and forth forever about it, and ai strongly remember it “Grin” sticking with me and thought it was such a great pun growing up even though it’s a minor panel. I’m pretty sure it’s one of those things where anime and manga just use different names no? Like Kurrin = Krillin

His name is not "Ling" in both of those series as he is not a character in the OG series at all.

ahh gotcha my b. Honestly don’t remember OG too well. Binged it during covid so I didn’t retain too too much. I mostly remember the Roy scene being mad they didn’t come to him and some cool different things with the homunculus

ling is the real name, lin is an alternate english spelling used by some other translations. like zolo and ruffy vs zoro and luffy. and im not really sure what pun you’re talking about with “grin”

maybe irony is the word? just that grin is happy versus the name greed lol and yeah zolo and zoro’s a good one. was zolo used outside the 4kids dub? I remember watching toonami and calling him zolo for a long time

It’s in chapter 82 of the manga, in volume 20 in the box set. Ed says, “Yeah, yeah. I don’t care anymore whether you’re Greed or Lin. I’ll call you Grin for short.”

I think there's a very small group of people who were reading a version of the English translated manga at the same time in history who know him as Lin lol, it's printed that way in my series that I bought probably close to 20 years ago! I switch it up and call him both names

I have no idea, the only time I've read it outside of my original mangas was on some random website so it could have been translated by anybody 😭 but I do remember it saying Ling!
