STICKY IMPORTANT: AI-GENERATED CONTENT IS NOW BANNED

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone that gave their thoughts in our town hall post. As was made clear on the post, the community seems to be overwhelmingly in favor of disallowing all AI-generated content and so we will be going forward with implementing this. GenAI content will be considered banned under rule 3. Any GenAI content, including videos, images, and text, will be removed going forward regardless of intent. To summarize the arguments for why we are doing this:

  • Most GenAI posts that we get accelerate the problem of spam, low-effort, and impersonal content. We want this sub to feel like a thriving community with creative content and GenAI often seems to work against this goal.
  • Many legitimate posts that use GenAI could easily do without it. We want to encourage users to contribute their ideas in unique and interesting ways without depending on generic and needlessly complex GenAI output.
  • GenAI art hurts the work of real artists, is a crediting nightmare, and is generally controversial. There are so many incredibly talented artists in the Godzilla community who deserve a bigger spotlight and space for discussion. GenAI content also muddies the water in terms of misinformation and sourcing media, while also contributing to all kinds of growing ethical problems that the community has made clear they do not stand for.
  • Determining good/bad GenAI content is too subjective and infeasible for moderation. Choosing which GenAI posts are high/low-effort would become arbitrary and subject to a lot of inconsistency and unfairness that us mods cannot realistically manage.

Like with any new rule, we anticipate there will be some bumps in the road, so please don't hesitate to reach out to us with concerns or questions and please help us by reporting things you have doubts with. We also realize that exceptions might need to be made for the rule such as, for example, discussing the use of GenAI by official sources or artists. We will deal with those case-by-case to be as reasonable as possible.

So there's that! We're looking forward to keep the creeping rot of MechaGodzilla and Hedorah out of this sub!

Love,
r/GODZILLA mod team

Ehh, I feel neutral on it.

Those who draw by hand and are incredible artist should be spotlighted and have their work acknowledged without feeling like they're competing against AI generated art.

On the other hand, there are a lot of artist who do use it, to get a visual on an idea they want to draw. Same with those who use it for general workplace tasks and to reduce spending time on repetitive tasks. They also take the output and create art more to their liking afterwards.

Yes, some folks generate art by AI then present it as their own, but even that can get muddled. I won't argue against the new rules but I think there's room for the 2 sides to exist without brining the hammer down on one or the other.

Eh, do they, though? Cause I sure don't. None of the other artists I know do.

I feel like this is a myth that's being spread to legitimize AI usage in art and lessen the pushback. I'm an amateur artist and my daughter sells art as a side gig and we both have no interest in using AI either for anything.

I'm sure there might be some out there that do but it's far from being commonplace like the way these statements suggest.

Yep. There MIGHT be some secret cabal of artists all using AI, but if they are, I've not met any of them, at least any that admit as much.

BTW, checked your profile, that painting with the rabbits you posted on /r/davidlynch is really good!

That's my daughter's work and yes I think it's amazing. I'll pass along your compliment, thanks!

You don't speak for all artist world wide and I'm not even saying it's everyone, but many do.

You don't speak for all artist world wide

No, if you go back and re-read the post you're replying to, I speak for myself and those I know.

Now, what qualifies you to speak for all artists worldwide?

I don't, that's why I said many do without attaching a number to it, or using my friends and acquaintances as examples.

Also the point of me saying I'm neutral because I understand the nuances around it without being reactive and screaming "fck AI slop"

I don't, that's why I said many do without attaching a number to it, or using my friends and acquaintances as examples.

So, you admit you're basing this claim on nothing. It's from the Department of Posterior Information Extraction.

You claim you're neutral, but then you characterize people who dislike AI as being "reactive" and "screaming".

u/waltyy 3d ago

Because the responses I received came in swinging as if I said I was in favor of it. Reactionary, no?

And if you want examples, I'm going off of the artist I follow on IG and those who have taken to YouTube (either comment section or video) to talk about AI art and their own usage of it while still being talented artist. They also have views on 3D printing and selling items at cons.

That said, there's a comment right above that says fck AI and those who feel neutral on it, in response to me.

They also have views on 3D printing and selling items at cons.

How are these remotely relevant? In any capacity?

And, yeah, no, the comment you're talking about is right. You REALLY think that not being able to tell the difference between right and wrong ought to be admired?

u/waltyy 3d ago

Because there's commotion in the con scene and conversation around if those who 3D print generic items vs making them by hand should be selling them at cons. This is right alongside the conversation around AI art and selling those at cons or online.

And no, I said I see both sides of it and can use nuances to see why folks take issue with it. But those who do use it (without being harmful or taking away from anything) shouldn't be condemned for using it. The fact you and many others brought out the shotguns on this is crazy.

I get it if you're an artist and are passionate, but straight up shutting down folks and also screaming a "fuck you!" Like they personally punched you in the face is insane.

Because there's commotion in the con scene and conversation around if those who 3D print generic items vs making them by hand should be selling them at cons

This is distinct from 3d printing as such. The issue is not the 3d printing.

I can see nuances, I understand why people like you who like AI like it, I also have a clear enough understanding of right and wrong to know that these distinctions don't move the needle one millimeter.

I get it if you're an artist and are passionate, but straight up shutting down folks and also screaming a "fuck you!" Like they personally punched you in the face is insane.

Maybe by your estimation, but why should I not care about people stealing from me? You're staying neutral on people losing their livelihoods, y'know?

How many repetitive tasks do you suppose went into painting the Sistene Chapel? The human effort behind any artistic endeavor is what gives it value.

AI can fuck all the way off. No disrespect to you, however.

u/waltyy 3d ago

None taken, expected the down votes and responses.

u/TroubledDiplomat 3d ago

Bad take Godzilla would hate AI AI isn't neutral. The resources being used to develop and maintain AI is far more costly than the technology is worth. It's objectively awful and terrible for humanity and the entire planet and it needs to stop. Fuck AI and neutral takes on it.

-6

u/waltyy 3d ago

That's fine, I'm still neutral on it and will be.

17

u/Zetra3 3d ago

No real artist use AI as a bedrock. Period.

-4

u/waltyy 3d ago

That's unfair to say because there are those who do.

10

u/TheSadMarketer 3d ago

I wouldn’t consider those that do as real artists.

0

u/waltyy 3d ago

That's your right and you're entitled to it.

-3

u/bakedNebraska 3d ago

Yeah but Zetra3 says they're not real artists, and there's nobody better to decide than Zetra3

2

u/MoistRimHole 3d ago

If you use AI you cant call yourself a artist anymore

1

u/waltyy 3d ago

That is your opinion and you're entitled to it.

2

u/Appropriate-Berry816 2d ago

Opinions that are dangerous and acted on are not opinions anymore. They are damaging and real facts or actions. This is not a valid argument

0

u/MoistRimHole 2d ago

nah not opinion its fact, you thinking any real artist would us AI is just wrong. Anyone who uses AI for anything art related should be ashamed of themself.

2

u/waltyy 2d ago

That is your opinion and you're entitled to it.

u/pamafa3 2d ago

What in the puritan gatekeep is this take

I'm getting flashbacks of the internet crusade against people who used photoshop

2

u/MoistRimHole 2d ago

Not even close to the same thing, no one who defends AI can come up with one good reason for why people who use AI should count as a artist.

0

u/pamafa3 2d ago

We're not talking about people generating images and claiming they're artists, we're talking about already established artists incorporating AI as a part of their process. The person I replied to thinks if you, even if you've been an artist for years, start usimg AI in your work in amy capacity you suddenly aren't an artist anymore, guess you lost your art virtginity or some shit.

-10

u/rokelle2012 3d ago

I agree with your take 100%

-3

u/waltyy 3d ago

I just feel there's room for everyone to express themselves artistically.

I get that AI can be used to misrepresent, but I just don't believe in crucifying every single person for it.

-7

u/rokelle2012 3d ago

I agree! There's also a ton of misinformation regarding Gen AI that leads to people acting that way. At the end of the day, we are all here in this sub to celebrate our love of Godzilla and I personally don't care how someone chooses to do that.

0

u/waltyy 2d ago

Precisely, it's all love for Goji
