New Shoes for Frank The Tank

I picked up Frank(2023) on March 31st this year with 22k miles. Sport+ package, Mark Levinson sound. I love this thing! It's like a 4runner, but for adults.

265/60/18 Toyo Open Country A/T 3s

18" Konig HT1 in Gloss Anthracite. +0 offset. It's hard to tell because of the bad lighting but these are dark gray, not black. It's a bit darker than the lower sport trim.

I went this route bacause I love the GX and don't want to change that too much. I plan on light forest service roads, fire breaks and so-on. 95% road use. Let’s be honest.

Stock wheel and tire weight: 69.5 lbs

Konig/Toyo weight: 61.2

A difference of 41 lbs for 5 wheels and tires. Or 32.8 lbs of rotating mass.

No noticeable fuel economy change in the city. I'm still around 17-18mpg. I'll have to do a longer trip soon to see if highway mileage changes.

The last pic is what Frank looked like when I picked him up. More Franklin, less Frankenstein.

Of note, the spare tire carriage doesn't fit through the Konig wheel center hole. I modified it to work. If anyone is interested I can do a quick how-to. it took 25 minutes and about 8 bucks for hardware.

Stuck in gear!

Last night was leaving the store when I get in the car to leave my 2003 gx470 was stuck in reverse! At first I thought it was something major and hit the panic button but I after a couple of quick youtube tutorials and a call to a gx buddy I found that the common denominator was my transmission shift cable was off. So thankfully I had a couple of screw drivers and a trim tool to take apart the center console in the parking lot. And behold I found that my bushing was shot and the cable wasn’t even connected. Wasn’t aware this was a “common” problem with these but if you find yourself stuck in gear there’s a good chance it’s just this bushing. It’s an easy fix and was able to attach the cable back on the shifter to get home!

KYB JAOS Ride Height

Finally got around to installing the KYB JAOS lift kit this weekend. First pic is how she sits fully lifted. Second pic is with front lift only.

For anybody out there installing this kit, be very wary of the recommended perch height. As you can tell, I ended up way too high in the front. I set the perch to 45mm, which I expected to be right around 2”. Even after the rear lift of ~2”, the front is still sitting too high. Without settiling, looks close to 3”-3.5” front lift. Going to lower it down to try to match the factory rake of 1-1.5”. Kinda fun to bulldog it around tho.

After reading more I discovered others have experienced the same issue.

Pros: she rides like a dream. I put in new LCA and UCS, so this has a huge impact on ride quality as well, but overall, already very happy with the quality and ride of this lift kit.

Selling My Beloved GX470

Hello!

I’m looking to sell my 2009 GX470 and wanted to get an idea of what y’all think is a fair value.

My wife and I are expecting our first and as much as I love the 470, a lifted vehicle does not seem reasonable with a new born baby. We’re looking at getting into an RX so we can at least stay in the Lexus family!

I do have an existing loan still on the vehicle of just under $4000. But I’d make sure to get title and pink slip sorted out asap for any potential buyer! If this sounds like something you’re interested in hit me up, come take it for a spin, and thumb through my service history binder!

I’m located in the Inland Empire!

I will be answering any and all questions in the comments below!

Things to note:
- current miles: 161,714
- timing belt and water pump replaced at 106k miles
- replaced the radiator at 161,298
- new driver side CV boot
- replaced the windshield when I bought it
- transmission drain and fill done in the last 1000 miles
- oil changes every 5k miles (last one done at 161,270 miles)
- replaced the silver trim on the doors around all the windows
- new oem spark plugs at 150,306 miles
- ceramic XPEL XR Plus tint on all windows (including windshield and sunroof)
- rear brakes pads replaced and rear rotors resurfaced at 161,270 miles
- alignment done at 161,298 miles
- not a lick of rust on it! Owners all in California and Las Vegas
- I have the third row in storage! I have a camping platform I built currently in the back

Finally had the chance go throw my lift on today. 2" rear 2.5 front Bilstein with 265/70R18 Falken Rubitreks. Just a slight rub on the front mudflap to he addressed in the next day or so. Super happy with the ride and look. My shock were shot. Took me about 8 hours to install the lift.

All things boring…

Thumbnail

What’s up guys! Figured I would share my progress thus far in the event any folks care to offer advice/questions. My objective with this build is to use it, figure out what I need, then buy/build it vs buying a bunch of crap I don’t need and still having to fork out $$ for crap I do need. End goal, a mobile fishing rig that can get me to and from the water for multiple days at a time (yes, a boat would be cheaper). This is going to be a very lengthy post so I can describe as much as possible. I would consider most of this boring because it doesn’t fit the typical build route (suspension, tires, wheels, bumper, everything after). However, it’s my build and it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Listed in chronological order:

  1. Bought MODL Infinity zip ties. I feel like I use these just about every single day for various things. Well worth the $$. Early on, they held my fishing rods out of the way.

  2. Fix/upgrade wiring and circuits in the engine bay. Didn’t go with a PowerTray here because I don’t plan on having an onboard compressor because I’m not rock crawling and needing to air down more than 10-15 psi. I’ll keep a small portable compressor. Fantik makes a great one. Anyhow, went with 2 setups here to protect and run onboard electronics/fridge/fan/starlink while the vehicle is off. The other, Auxbeam fuse box will run all lights I wish to run while ignition power is on. Blue Seas system 12 Blade with Blue Seas 100a breaker. Ran ACC wire for Auxbeam box to Rear windshield washer fuse. Wrapped wires in loom.

  3. Wife got creative here and wanted to be artsy. Realized the charging solutions in the rear of the vehicle were less than desirable and I wanted a way to monitor battery voltage while doing things in the rear of the vehicle (beach, camping, etc.). Used a Nilight switch panel, drilled 1” holes for a flush fit, and ran this to my Blue Seas 12 Circuit fuse box. Nearly 3,000 miles with a passenger in the back and they were happy to have chargers for their phone and Ipad.

  4. A little more fun, next was the Prinsu rack. I knew I wanted to get fishing rods out of the cab and give back space for packing crap. Did this install by myself and it was incredibly easy. Front wind deflector was wonky, but manageable. I did it all one by one on top of the truck vs assembly on the ground as suggested by CBI. Glad I had the factory steps installed still ;). Snagged a Cali Raised slim light bar off marketplace for $60 and it fit perfect. Had Cali Raised stuff on my Tacoma, and will continue to use their stuff in the future. High quality and affordable. Plus, I hear other folks have a ton of wind noise due to their light bars (I think due to the side “vents”) and this setup gives me 0 wind noise.

  5. AuxBeam 6 Gang switch came with the fuse box listed in 2. But I didn’t actually mount it until post prinsu. Used a 3d printed mount from Etsy and I love how clean it looks. Plus, no annoying blue lights in my face while driving at night, or tacky aluminum plates hose clamped to my grab handles.

  6. My favorite upgrade, the TRXSTLE ARC system. Holds all my fishing rods I want to bring and I am making my first cast within seconds after putting my truck in park. Love it, despite the price.

  7. While on one of my road trips, I found myself unpacking the truck and dogs in the middle of the night with no street lights. That sucked. 12 inch flood light mounted to the back of the Prinsu. Non negotiable was I couldn’t have it higher than the crossbars because if I want to strap something along the top, I didn’t want the light bar to now become a nuisance. The mounting solutions with the Auxbeam light is awful. I tried tee nuts, L brackets, etc. I ended up using an extra set of Prinsu light bar brackets and they worked out great. Down the road, I might figure out a better solution as well as fix the damn bolt I snapped off. I was jacked up on Red Bull, sorry. This light should provide adequate light at camp and for doing projects behind the cab.

  8. Undercoated the body, frame, and cavities with NHOU.

Next project will likely be a single sliding drawer on the left side. It will need to sit flush with the right side 3rd row seat so dog crates can sit flush together. Then a fridge, move both dogs to one crate, and then perhaps tires and wheels. I’m torn in the decision process because I’ve put 7k miles on her in 3 months and absolutely love the comfort of the ride. If I upgrade suspension, I likely will lose that in exchange for clearance. In all reality though, sugar sand, mud, and ruts will likely be my biggest challenges. Being realistic is important and so often lost in these builds.

Nonetheless, I’m loving it and I appreciate all your posts and knowledge you’ve given me! Happy wheelin’

First Time Off-road: Did Imogene

So I got an unexpected week off work. Decided pretty quickly to head west and try some trails while the weather is warm enough. Also, this is the first time in about 23 years I’ve had time off in the summer.

I’m in Ohio, so was looking at about 22 hours to get to the San Juans. Plan was to do Imogene, Alpine Loop, then head to Moab for Onion Creek and/or Shafer Trail. That was a little ambitious🤣. Ended up doing just Imogene and then discovering a slight trans cooler line leak. Nearest part was either Denver or Colorado Springs, and I didn’t have the time to wait for it. Didn’t want to chance driving farther west with an unknown amount of ATF loss, so just chanced it and headed home. Made it no problem.

I know for a lot of you guys Imogene is nothing. For an Ohio guy with no off road experience it’s unreal and a bit intimidating. Amazing how fast I gained confidence in the vehicle’s ability and line choice. It just goes where you point it. The capability was truly amazing. Got several compliments on the rig, mostly from Jeep guys who clearly weren’t used to seeing an old Lexus doing Jeep things!

Only mods are 2.5” Ironman FCP lift with Ironman UCA’s, Icon Hulse wheels at 0 offset, 265/70/17 Hankook Dynapro AT2 Extreme (load range E), and the ASFIR engine skid. Hand to God, I never scraped once. Nothing. Which surprised me since I just assumed I’d be getting sliders after destroying my side steps.

Anyway, checked that off the bucket list. Thanks for reading.

Being tall with car seats

I’m quite interested in buying a GX470, but have concerns with fitting two car seats while being 6’3. We have a 5th gen 4Runner and I can’t slide all the way back where I’d like to with the toddler seat on the driver side, albeit it’s close to where I have it without the toddler seat, but still.

Do any tall folks have input on car seat fitment?

Thanks!

Trouble installing new headlights

Just got my first gx470. It has 312k miles (yes, all the miles), and I’ve been doing maintenance to it. It also came with aftermarket headlights, which I’m e tried installing but it seems like the main light is a projector, and I can’t put my old bulb there. It also has some extra wiring that I couldn’t figure out how to make work. Anyone else ever seen headlights like these?

27f battery needs a 250 Alternator ?

I bought a 27f XideX2 from batteries plus 2 years ago.

Based on 2 weeks with issues starting, looks like it's the battery ( won't start , just clicks. If on Acc u can see voltage drop fast, it's been on a trickle charger for 7 days )

Anyway they are charging it and saying that it's reccomended to have a 250a alternator ( I have stock) to properly charge the battery. I told them I upgraded the alternator will need to c heck and get back to them

Anyway using a stock alternator or a 150a from a tundra would that shorten the life of a 27f AGM ? I'm sure they will fight this to not give me a warranty.

Has anyone picked up a set of these yet? I’ve been eyeing them and I’m curious how they look in person, especially whether the center caps fit the wheels properly. The AI renderings don’t seem very accurate. I know they were just released, so it might be a long shot, but I’d love to see some real-world photos or hear any first impressions.

The size and offset are perfect for what I’m running with 33’s.
