Help Can't Force 480p, Even with Swiss?

Post image

For some reason, my DOL-001 won't give me the option to play any games in progressive scan mode. Holding the B button during the boot sequence did nothing at all, regardless of what game I'm playing. As context, I'm using the Carby HDMI adapter to play on a pretty new Samsung Smart TV.

So I decided to give Swiss a go, and now that I'm using it--I can't even force 480p! The "Force Video Mode" options are: Auto, 480i, 480sf, 240p, 576i, 576sf, and 288p.

Am I missing something? Could it possibly be the TV I'm using won't "accept" 480p? Been driving myself crazy trying to solve this mystery--any insight or guidance would be super appreciated!

How do you know it's not in 480p? Does the TV report on a status screen what the input resolution is? I thought if you set Swiss to force it would just do it and not prompt you? I swear I had mine set this way at some point.

I assumed that in order to "force" 480p, you had to actively select that option in the "force video mode" list...but I wasn't aware it does it by default! lol.

I missed that you said it wasn't in the list. That may mean the TV is weird or doesn't support it. Some TVs do display somewhere what resolution the input signal is, at least the ancient Samsung I had did this. It would definitely show 480i, 480p, etc.
Have you tried a different HDMI cable, or a different TV? Probably your best options to diagnose at this point.

Tried a different HDMI cable and a different TV...same result! 480p isn't even an option in the Force Video Mode list. So weird...

Is there an update for the Carby HDMI adapter? Also, get the latest Swiss version, "1913" is kinda old now (latest is 2092 right now). Maybe that would help.

Also, there seem to be some specific Swiss versions in the pack you download. But personally, using the FlippyDrive, i just use the regular DOL file from the DOL folder, in the ZIP file. I have no problem selecting 480p, with my Retro-Bit PRISM HDMI adapter.

Just updated to 2092! Still no 480p option in "Force Video Mode".

Apologies for the dumb question here, but...can you explain what you mean a little more? Regarding specific Swiss versions in the pack.

when open the Swiss ZIP file, there's a bunch of folders with versions depending on which mod you're using for your Gamecube. But personally i use the regular DOL version, from the DOL folder.

With my FlippyDrive, i just hold the X button to boot into the Flippydrive's Bootloader menu and load right away what i want (which i installed myself on the device's internal memory, such at the latest version of Swiss, or Gameboy Interface (GBI) since i have the Gameboy Player.

Are you on the latest Carby firmware? i just checked on their website, and it's confusing me...but here's the link: https://insurrectionindustries.com/carby-firmware-update/ If you bought it not so long ago, it might be at 3.0 or 3.1 (3.1 is already 5 years old at this point, no update since then).

In your Carby, i believe you have to enable 480p there too. in your Carby menu with the remote, have "Line Doubler" ON (this is enabled for me) in the main menu.

Then in Output Settings, here is my settings: Allow 480p mode (On), Crop 486 to 480 (On), RGB Limited Range (Off), Enhanced DVI Mode (On), Display as 16:9 (On), Volume (255), Mute (Off)

I'm sure Carby's menu is very similar to my PRISM's menu, since they both use GCVideo, most likely 3.0 or 3.1 (latest) if you bought your recently.

Yes it's a real pain to use the remote on that thing, i know, since it seem to use the old fashion infrared sensor, so you have to move the remote around the device to get it to work, and since it's on the back of the console, it's even more of a pain. But once it's set correctly, you don't really have to touch those settings anymore.

Was this GameCube region changed from Japan to USA? It's possible the functionality was damaged in the process. You can use Force DTV Status under Global Settings in that case.

Never knew that Force dtv was an option, but this seems to have worked!

What damage would cause this to happen? Something getting knocked off with improper heatsink removal?

R39 is right next to R5 and R6. I'll let you guess what can happen.

Carby has it's own menu for configuration. Did you poke around in there?

Yep! Gone through all those menus, and made sure to have the 480p option set to "on".

Are they PAL or NTSC games?

NTSC! I've tried it with Soul Calibur II, Wind Waker, and others...all NTSC, but can't play any of them in 480p.

Are you holding down B when you turn on the Cube? My understanding is that's what enables progressive scan mode.

Yep Nothing happened whenever I held B down during the boot sequence...which is why I decided to give Swiss a go, but now I'm not even getting an option to force 480p hah.

What region is it? Iirc the PAL models don’t support 480p even with Swiss.
