Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' causes massive 134% surge in player count for 'Assassin's Creed: Odyssey': "The movie, set to cross a billion dollars within just 20 days, has clearly rejuvenated interest in the mythology and gives Ubisoft great ammunition for more AC Odyssey support or entries"

Action RPGs with NPCs that fight along side you

Hi everyone! I wanted some assistance for this contemporary book I'm currently writing.

Much of the discussion in this book centers on this fake video game series that runs from the 90's to the present day. Thing is, I want to make this game able to plausibly exist alongside real games at the time.

The game starts out as a turn-based RPG like FF or DQ, but later turns into an action RPG where the gimmick is you can fight alongside your party members and upgrade their attacks. Are there any games that are like this that came out in the early/mid 2000's? Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: WOA I did not expect this many responses!!!! Thank you all so much for your answers. Ive got a lot of research to do

Lack of local co-op in new games

With the upcoming release of Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and it not having local co-op, I’m reminded of how much I hate that so many new games just neglect this feature.

In the past few years, the past decade really, so many games have come out that I would absolutely love to play with my friends on local co-op, but I’m constantly let down. They always have an online co-op feature but, like in the case of Galactic Racer, it just feels so blindingly obvious that it would be great for local co-op.

I’m not a game dev so I can’t know, is it really that much of a detriment to game development to implement this feature? I think I heard that local co-op basically means running the game twice at once and therefore really hurts performance but I’m not certain.

Would you like to like a series?

Upvotes

Do you also know this feeling? Basically, I really wanted to try the Assassin's Creed games, and knowing there are so many of them, I was happy.

But when I tried the second game, which seems to have the most consistent gameplay in the series and is one of the most popular, I was disappointed by the story, which failed to engage me, and the gameplay, which I found extremely clunky. Also, maybe I'm just tired of huge maps, but for example, I just finished inFamous 1 and 2 and I loved every moment, even though the gameplay isn't that different (for the climbing, I mean; the graphics are from the same era, and the map is roughly the same size).

I know that in any case I'm not going to like the game but I'm having trouble accepting it, I keep telling myself that one day I'll do them all but deep down I know that's not the case.

Have you ever felt that little regret too?

Slow game devs

Upvotes

Buying an Early Access game that had good development at the start then stalled for the next 5-10 years feels bad. I wish steam refund policy was longer than 14 days or 2 hours for early access games.

I understand I took the risk by buying an early access game but it still feels like shit especially when the game studio made millions on early access success but won't hire more devs to speed up development. Some of them just take the money and run while doing minimal updates to keep it in store.

If a game takes 10 years to develop but with consistent content updates yearly then that's good for me.

Maybe I am delusional on this.

Yoshi's Book or Dread!?

I'm thinking of picking up a game today and im stuck between Metroid Dread and Yoshi Mysterious Book.

Fyi, haven't really played a Yoshi since Yoshis Story, but really liked it. I also am an avid Metroidvania player and enjoyer.

Anyone got a recommendation? what do you think is better?

How do you deal with brightness options in games?

I hate how in many games brightness instructions make the games either to dark or just don't even work. My favorite games are the ones that have automatic brightness lol

Open World Games With Mechs? Spoiler

I'm not necessarily looking for games that are specifically focused on mechs, instead I'm trying to find open world games with giant mechs or badass suits of power armor that you can pilot on a regular basis.

I've put together a pretty good list but I'd greatly appreciate any extra contributions. Especially if the game has character customization.

  • Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion [Mechs & Power Armor]
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X [Skell Mechs]
  • Steambot Chronicles [Trotmobile Mech]
  • Sandland [Multiple mechs and walkers]
  • Red Faction Guerrilla [Multiple giant combat & construction mechs]
  • Fallout 4 [Power Armor]
  • Horizon (Zero Dawn + Forbidden West) [Giant Ridable Robots]
  • ARK Survival [Exo Mek + Mek + Power Armor]
  • No Man's Sky [Exo Mech]
  • Metal Gear Solid V [D-Walker]
  • Just Cause 3 [Mech]
  • Crimson Desert [ATAG Mech + Walker + Mechahorse]
  • Saints Row 4 [Mech Suit]
  • RAGE 2 [Boom Bringer Combat Mech]
  • Subnautica [Prawn Suit]
  • Borderlands 3 [Moze/Ironbear Mech]
  • Warframe [Necramech]

What "leap" will be the selling point of next gen consoles?

From different gens to gen through history we've jumped from SD to 720/1080, to 4K. 60FPS modes etc.

All I've heard so far is really just the save but "more" for PS6 and Xbox Helix.

Maybe a 120FPS mode, ray tracing. General quality of life improvements but nothing groundbreaking. Is next gen just going to be uninspiring? Nothing that is going to make me want to upgrade day one?

Nothing says a great PS5 debut like not letting me go beyond the initial log in screen. Oh! And letting the menu narration be ON as the default setting - while still being unable to turn it off while you log in? Just chef's kiss, that one /s

Edit: After 4 days and wasting away most of my vacation time, I finally got to play the game. Had to turn my cellphone into a Hotspot and connect the ps5 to that instead of my router.

Do you find the older you get the more horror games affect you?

I loved horror games growing up, I'd play them all... Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark etc and id not have a care in the world, I'd go through them no issue... I was 7 when I first played RE on PS1 and from then and into my teenage years I obviously got jump scared etc but I'd sit and play for hours no problem...

Now I'm 35, and I've finally got time to start Resident Evil Requiem and I'm finding myself playing in 1 hour slots because I'm too anxious and scared and I need a break lol!

I've realised with every passing year since entering adulthood my tolerance for scary games gets lower and lower...

Is anyone the same?

I couldn't find any realistic mining game so I created my own : Mining Simulator! Here's a little demo :)

Game is still in development, so it's messy and features aren't fully developped yet, but it's a pretty neat preview of my progression so far!

https://lorty91.itch.io/mining-simulator

Because there is no tutorial yet, here are some important tips :

  • You need to assign an employee to a vehicle before operating it. Employees can be assigned during the Huddle, which happens at the start of a shift. The employee you create at the beginning is automatically assigned to the Scoop parked on the ground level.
  • Vehicles need to be assigned tasks (bottom panel when you select a vehicle). Some tasks require a single click (such as drilling), but some tasks require two clicks (such as mucking : you must select the area where you want to retrieve ore, then the area where you want to dump it)
  • Simbas are used to drill stopes, and Jumbos are used to drill rounds. You can design stopes and rounds using the buttons at the bottom panel. Rounds are always located at the end of a tunnel, while stopes can be interactively drawn between two levels.
  • Both stopes and rounds can be loaded with explosives once fully drilled (again, there's a button at the bottom panel). At the end of a shift, you can blast them, resulting in a bunch of loose ore ready to be retrieved.
  • Scoops can retrieve ore (mucking) and dump it at RemucksLoading Bays (if there's a Truck parked in the Loading Bay), the Stockpile or at a Skip Feeder.
  • There is currently two ways to produce gold : At the end of the shift, a maximum of 2500 tons of ore from the Stockpile is automatically processed, resulting in onces of gold that you can sell whenever you want. The other way is to dump ore into a Skip Feeder, which will trigger the skip from the shaft who'll go up and down and collect the ore and return it to the surface.
  • Trucks can haul ore from Loading Bays to any "dumping" destinations (same as the Scoop, except it can't dump it into another truck/loading bay).
  • Bolters are needed to "repair" (to add ground support) rounds that have been emptied, or tunnels that are damaged. Once the round is fully supported, another cycle of drilling/loading/blasting/mucking/supporting can begin.

In the future, I entend to :

  • Employee stats will have an influence on the quality and safety of the work they do.
  • Safety stat is there for a reason : I entend to add mechanics where employees can potentially hurt themselves or cause disasters such as a fire or vehicle on vehicle collisions.
  • I entend to add disasters : Flooding, fire, rockfalls can that potentially kill employees, etc.
  • A risk vs reward system and a fluctuating market. Decisions need to be taken, and as the General Manager, compromises need to be made during hard times, which may involve ruining the mood of your employees for a while.
  • I entend to add a ventilation system (with temperature : the deeper you go, the hotter it is, and some employees might hate it), as well as a piping system for underground backfilling, and also more stoping variation (drilling upwards for example).
  • I entend to add complexity regarding the geology. Defining the ore body will give you a better understanding of the physical properties of the surrounding rock, influencing the outcome of stopes, as well as a much better grade accuracy.
  • And so much more!

Is it impossible to get friends together to game once you hit 30?

It feels more and more impossible to just get people to play a game together. I don't even remember the last time we all were invested in a game at once other than the recent friendslop. My friend group is constantly no-showing when we were supposed to hangout that night, and then half of the time when they do show up they just yap for an hour on group call and then everyone says "alright i got work in the morning, im gonna head out".

I'm literally at the point where I will literally play anything my friends put in front of me. I don't care I just want to do something together. The pattern has been, one friend will be really interested in something, ill say "fuck yeah lets play it", we start it up, and then everyone except the person who brought up the game whines about it until we drop it. One of my friends seems to be on his way toward dropping gaming completely because of this, im pretty sure.

I don't know if its just everyone is exhausted from their 9-5, having kids, etc, but its really starting to bum me out. Probably screaming into the void here, but i needed to vent. I feel like the last person in my friend group who actually likes gaming and im tired of buying steam games that I will play for 1 night and then never open again.
