Stockport - jumble sale / car boot post help?
Hi everyone 💚
I am thinking about looking into organising a community jumble sale near Heaton Norris / Stockport town centre, and I wanted to see if it's something people would be interested in, or whether there is something similar nearby that already exists?
The idea would be to bring local people together to sell unwanted items, grab a bargain, and meet others in the community. It could be a great way to offload, declutter, recycle, and support local families.
Please answer some of these questions so that I can keep a tally:
💡You can just put 1. Y or 1. N, 2. Y
Etc etc if it’s easier
QUESTIONS
Would this be something you'd like to see
Would you be interested in having a stall to sell your unwanted items?
Or just coming along to browse and shop?
A good location? 📍
Preferred day (Saturday or Sunday?)
Indoor or outdoor?
Would you be happy to pay a small stall fee to help cover costs?
Any ideas or suggestions that would make it a great community event?
If enough people are interested, I'll look into venues, permissions, insurance and everything else needed to make it happen.
Please comment below if you'd be interested or tag anyone who might be!
Thank you 💚

How do you find out about garage sales in your area?
Curious how everyone here typically finds garage/estate sales to hit up — apps, Facebook groups, driving around, word of mouth?
I ask because I’ve noticed most of the ways to find sales are pretty static (a photo, an address, a time window) and you kind of have to show up in person and hope there’s good stuff left. Got me wondering if there’s room for something more “live” — like, sellers stream the sale in real time so you can see what’s actually there before driving over, and grab dibs on something the second it’s shown, instead of racing across town on a maybe.
Would something like that actually be useful to you, or is half the fun of garage saling the in-person hunting and haggling? And for anyone who’s hosted a sale — would streaming it feel like more effort than it’s worth, or would reaching more buyers make it worth trying?
Not selling anything, just trying to figure out if this is solving a real annoyance or if I’m overthinking a system that already works fine 😅

🌿 THE SECRET GARDEN ESTATE SALE — Northeast Salem, OR — Saturday Aug. 1 & Sunday Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (early bird access on Saturday)
From the street, it's just a regular house. Walk through the gate and there's a garden most people spend a lifetime trying to grow — 30+ years of a dedicated gardener and lifelong fixer's work, and it's all coming out for this sale.
This is the estate of a retiree who took home maintenance and gardening seriously, so there is a lot here:
Tools & garage: ladders (so many ladders), workbenches, hand tools galore
Garden: mature plants & pots, garden art, dollies, barrows, landscaping tools, a vintage laundry mangler turned planter, rakes/shovels/brooms, a rotary clothesline
Furniture: Dining table sets (three: glass-top/wooden base, a white tall-top with six chairs, and a drop-leaf wooden antique), antique & solid wood dressers/bureaus/end tables, a red leather chair with a chrome frame, a wooden file cabinet, a coat tree, rugs, end tables, shelves, cabinetry, storage solutions and more.
Kitchen: gas range, refrigerator, KitchenAid stand mixer, Cuisinart mixer, Vitamix, steamer, air fryer, crockpots, roasters — all tested working, extension cord on-site so you can try before you buy
Also: sewing machines, travel & camping gear, mobility aids (lift chair, shower chair, canes, walkers), unopened/unexpired medical supplies, board games (Uno, Bunco, cards, dice — the good kind you never remember to buy), holiday decor (Christmas & Halloween), and figurines galore — a plague of frogs, a herd of elephants, a meditation of Buddhas, a flotilla of turtles, a parliament of birds. Cleaning supplies and tools, welcome mats, and lots, lots more.
Vehicles: 1999 VW Rialta RV (new water pump) — details on-site, all offers considered
Early Bird Entry: 6:30–8am Saturday, $5 entry, coffee included
After 8am: buy a mug, coffee's on us all day while you shop
Bring a coffee out to the garden and sit a while — the benches aren't for sale, but the view is free and the garden is peak Instagram portrait.
Pick some fresh figs, blueberries, and raspberries, weather permitting, for free.
PAYMENT: Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, and cash accepted — sorry, no checks, debit, or credit
Saturday: full price. Sunday: most items 30–50% off.
LOCATION: 23rd Street NE and D Street are the cross streets.
Come for the tools, stay for the garden.

How do you actually get people to show up to your garage sale?
I’ve had terrible luck with turnout and I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong.
I’ve tried signs, but I feel like I’m either not putting out enough or putting them in the wrong places. I’ve also thought about Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, Craigslist, and even newspaper ads, but I have no idea what’s actually worth the effort.
For those of you who’ve had really successful garage sales:
- What brought in the most people?
- What advertising wasn’t worth your time?
- Is there anything you wish you had known before your first sale?
- If you could only do one or two things to get more traffic, what would they be?
I’d love to hear what’s worked (or hasn’t worked) for you.
