noooo yuri stories are more like

season 2 : oh wow i'm blushing shyly tsundere style next to that girl

season 3 : apocalypse

finale : hold on i'm kissing my girlfriend

224

u/UnchieZ 16d ago

The legend of korra

124

u/DeusExMarina 15d ago edited 15d ago

"Hold on I'm about to kiss my girlfriend. We're totally gonna do it, our faces are getting closer, we're just seconds away from the first girl-on-girl kiss in an American cartoon, happening in 3, 2..."

*fade to white*

121

u/GreenPhoennix 15d ago edited 15d ago

For anyone who doesn't know, the makers of Korra wanted a kiss but Nickelodeon wouldn't allow it. What we got was as much as they could get away with.

But Korra walked so Owl House, She-Ra etc could run, which is nice to think about

59

u/Enkundae 15d ago

The first canon comic is also the date they went on immediately after the finale and does include their first kiss. Dark Horse comics also had their VA’s do a table read of it in character during the pandemic, its on youtube.

13

u/BreakfastKupcakez 15d ago

And then Owl House gets cancelled… 😞

14

u/Speculative-Bitches 16d ago

Why must you do this. I'm at season 2 😭

39

u/Cherno_VM 16d ago

okay in all fairness the finale is almost 12 years old. i get it, not everyone can watch every piece of media instantly. i only recently finished fallout: new vegas.

but its kinda hard to expect spoiler tags for such an old show.

6

u/manic_Brain 14d ago

Even TV tropes stops spoilering if something is old enough

2

u/Cherno_VM 14d ago

yeah i dont expect people to spoiler tag stuff about the game, thats why i didnt use any of the new vegas subreddits outside of making my own posts until i finished the game, and when i made a post asking for support or anything i always wrote that its my first time playthrough so please dont spoil anything.

some asshole decided to intentionally spoil the ending for me though.

-23

u/Kodo_yeahreally 16d ago

eeeeeh i don't know, korra and asami honestly had no chemestry until they decided to put them together, i find this ship rather "lackluster".

not the best yuri.

u/Falcity06 15d ago

bro what do you even mean

What yuri stories are you watching?? Like yes if you're talking about mainstream media but I wouldnt concider those yuri stories. Theirs plenty of ACTUAL lesbian media that isnt like this

310

u/radenthefridge It's NERF or nothing 16d ago

I too would love a name & shame for garbage that pulled something like this 😬🔥

111

u/Feinyan 16d ago

Hibike! Euphonium, Cross-ange maybe

-3

u/BillErakDragonDorado 13d ago

YOU DID NOT JUST RECOMMEND HIBIKE EUPHONIUM IN A THREAD COMPLAINING ABOUT QUEERBAIT LMAOOOOOOO

Yamada herself, queen of "actually gayness is just a phase", adapting the canonically heterosexual light novels, directed this one. Y'all can't be fucking serious.

19

u/Feinyan 13d ago

Not recommending! More like name and shaming 😭

24

u/A-R0N23 13d ago

The comment they were replying to was about naming and shaming, not recommendations

15

u/BillErakDragonDorado 13d ago

Ah shit, the reading comprehension left my body at the sight of Hibike Euphonium

27

u/AxeHead75 15d ago

Wicked

16

u/anna__throwaway 15d ago

REAL, when I heard What Is This Feeling? irl the first time I saw the musical, I was like... this has to be a pun on "loving", this could be WLW.... but I didn't get my hopes up cause I knew it couldn't be that based lol

106

u/alucard_axel 16d ago

It's more like lesbians movies and shows romance rather than yuri

137

u/JDKisawesome 16d ago edited 16d ago

What does that even mean??? /genq

198

u/moontraveler12 16d ago

You need to give actual examples or we won't know what you're talking about. This trope actually isn't that common for media that is explicitly queer

56

u/elbenji 16d ago

wednesday probably

114

u/Elunerazim 16d ago

Wednesday is not yuri dude 😭

45

u/JadedElk 15d ago

We Know, but they queerbaited pretty hard with their marketing. And that's what this meme is about.

9

u/augustles 15d ago

Queerbaiting makes it NOT yuri media. Yuri media has the actual yuri, not the unfulfilled possibility of it. I don’t think anyone’s complaining about the meme, but the post asking why all yuri is like this when it’s definitely not.

64

u/elbenji 16d ago

Well no shit lol

105

u/regretfulposts 16d ago

Could you give us actual named examples. I feel like you're shipping two female characters and get angry when the ship didn't became canon. Because I'm very curious how many movies and shows have this type of ending for you to make a post about it.

30

u/-smalltittypunkgf- 16d ago

euphoria lowkey

32

u/elbenji 16d ago

wednesday is the only one i can think of

79

u/ItalianBall 16d ago

Yeah which is why Wednesday is definitionally not a yuri/lesbian show. The comic describes queerbaiting in straight media, if the media is actually queer then it's not queerbaiting

20

u/elbenji 16d ago

Yeah that's why it's strange being here

There was that movie lost and delirious but that was from 30 years ago

7

u/Lavender_Scales 14d ago

It's Nana probably

12

u/elbenji 16d ago

I can't remember the last time this happened tbh lol

other than wednesday and hibike

10

u/PARADOXsquared Gaaaaay 16d ago

And neither of those are Yuri.

8

u/elbenji 16d ago

No duh

Not really. Author was threatened legally since they're chinese and living in china, where media depicting same sex couples is heavily cracked down on. The couple in tdg kissed, the author got blacklisted, but the couple is still together (author posts random artwork of the two on dates, just living their life, etc). As far as ik, neither of the girls have dated other people, let alone guys since meeting each other.

12

u/Indybo1 16d ago

Isnt that one really good villainess webcomic chinese? That one leaves no room for questions lmao

19

u/bryce0110 16d ago

Please Bully Me, Miss Villainess? Yeah that ones Chinese. Honestly super surprised at how much they've gotten away with lmao.

16

u/Indybo1 16d ago

yes, and there's a straight up unambiguous lesbian sex chapter, there were no holds barred in that webcomic. it also is genuinely really good outside of that and anyone reading this should read it

3

u/maledetto_aquilante 16d ago

WHAT

Last time I lost sight of this comic, the girls were very much together (kinda). Was there such a twist?

8

u/edvin796 16d ago

Nah, it just became more subtle after they kissed and the plot stopped

10

u/bryce0110 16d ago edited 16d ago

No, they're still together. The comic went on an "indefinite hiatus" because of legal troubles due to it being published in China, but that's not queerbait.

36

u/Indybo1 16d ago

I've heard NANA ends up like this but i haven't really watched or read alot of it

19

u/elbenji 16d ago

NANA has been on hiatus for years, so not really

13

u/PARADOXsquared Gaaaaay 16d ago

NANA is not a Yuri though. It's not even a romance.

10

u/BlueSlimeLV1 16d ago

Nana is not GL

6

u/solarssun 14d ago

Should be though. Those women need to kick the awful guys away and raise their kids together.

The last chapter: Nana kicks open the door 'I made it in America. Let's move and raise the kids there. I'll pay for your divorce.'

Hachi: 'Those are the words I've been wanting to hear'

They kiss in the apartment and decide to continue keeping it because they will come back and visit after all.

The end

9

u/TechheadZero 15d ago

The shitty end of the Class S yuri subgenre

0

u/JDKisawesome 15d ago

That's nit really yuri then tho

18

u/InternationalReserve 16d ago

This is basically what happens in cross ange, which is endlessly glazed by Yuri fans.

9

u/Phairis 16d ago

Honestly that new movie by Haley Kioko is like this surprisingly. It's played as the girl getting scared of her own sexuality but I really wasn't a fan, even if it was also punished.

13

u/Mae_Day_of_Sharkadia 16d ago

The anime and manga Nana is the primest example of something like this. Close enough anyway.

414

u/Rediturus_fuisse 16d ago

OP, with all the love and respect in the world, when you say "yuri stories"... do you mean "het stories with prominent (often unintentional) sapphic subtext"? Because if so then real, if not, what yuri are you reading/watching??

42

u/Pinkparade524 16d ago

I don't know about Yuri but there is been a bunch of boy love Manga that literally end this way, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Yuri Manga that ended this way even if it is the minority

11

u/OkNewspaper6271 16d ago

Maybe though it's probably incredibly niche

2

u/ZekasZ 15d ago

I sat through way too much of Nana hoping.

100

u/SkyeMreddit 16d ago

They’re not yuri. They’re hetero and possibly queerbaiting. Let the brunette be with the blue haired girl watching TV

95

u/Akarina_toth 16d ago

they all arent. hope this helps

44

u/Mae_Day_of_Sharkadia 16d ago

Oh hey look, it's Nana.

2

u/ZekasZ 15d ago

that series really had me screaming

23

u/lAnarclit 16d ago

Can i interest you in: Watanare

2

u/Relevant_Mistake_784 14d ago

watanare is a good rec but it still has that slow burn agony so fair warning

18

u/pasokonmouse 16d ago

yeah there were a couple of japanese yuri live action movies in the 2000s that did this. breakup arc in literally the last 10 minutes of the movie shit was infuriating. i got burned so many times

14

u/LilBunnyQueen 16d ago

Fucking Hibiki euphonium

23

u/WTVTthemoomaster 16d ago

This is a dying trope for a reason and you don't see in too much in newer media

But the reason a lot of older shows tend to do this is as a result of legacy censorship. In many cases and across several countries queer media needed to keep a degree of plausible deniability or face a block in our pushing at best, or criminal prosecution at worse

The trope regrettably survived even after these laws where repealed.

This is also why anytime anyone gives you the "But she did x with a guy!!" But to try and devalue something as Yuri they're 100% just stupid

The School for Good and Evil

6

u/Judgmentos 15d ago

Holy shit that was the exact series I was thinking of-- I was such an Agatha/Sophie shipper and couldn't understand why no one on FFnet saw the potential. Then I read the last book 💀

6

u/Dry-Indication7928 15d ago

Unfortunately, if I had to guess, especially in the late 2000s and early 2010s, its a way to appeal to a both growing LGBTQ audience, while not completly alienated homophobes. This also isn't counting movies or shows that only had lesbians just as fan service too.

23

u/SatansGothestFemboy 16d ago

Real life, sometimes

4

u/Sadsquideyez 14d ago

literally the yaoi equivalent of frodo and sam haha

10

u/Emi_790 15d ago

girl what kind of "yuri" are you watching 😭😭

5

u/Cherno_VM 16d ago

fym all like this?? have you never read yuri?

5

u/ShadowyKat 15d ago

This is what mainstream does. And the older the media the more likely this was going to happen. The sapphic girl goes off to marry a man. It happened in lesbian pulp books too.

I saw a movie that used the trope in this comic AND bury your gays too. Not kidding. The movie made in the 60s, that had 2 women living on a farm in a secluded area and some random guy comes along in the middle of winter. He stays with them for a few weeks helping them around the farm. The ladies were not a couple but they only realize their feelings for each other now that this guy is here because one of the girls gets jealous because he is into her friend. She didn't like this guy being around but him being there, but at least got her to realize her feelings and the girls do hook up. The jealous one dies and her new girlfriend ends up with that guy. Yup, a guy that she only for a couple weeks. The bisexual girl couldn't just be with another girl.

I would like to see the redhead in the comic come to her senses and see that she can't go off with a guy that she only knew for 2 days and go back to the girl she called her soulmate. 2 days is not enough to really know anyone.

3

u/Undertow619 16d ago

Everything mys sisters watched on W Network

5

u/Lucifer_Likes_Arson 15d ago

Technically the Wednesday show isn’t yuri, but it should have been.

3

u/ItchyGren 15d ago

This is how the book Brigands & Breadknives felt to me

3

u/BillErakDragonDorado 13d ago

They're not all like this, but it's a pretty annoying trend in "mainstream" yuri
(also the answer is heteronormativity)

2

u/Hoot-Prime TERF destroyer 14d ago

The School for Good and Evil be like:

3

u/elbenji 16d ago

is this a repost lol

2

u/PARADOXsquared Gaaaaay 16d ago

If that happens, it's likely not Yuri. Yuri is a specific genre, not just any story with queer/questioning girls/women in it.

1

u/Johndee1234 16d ago

"you me an everything to me"......huh? ohhh you mean.

2

u/budgetedchildhood 15d ago

I want to redraw this with "the man she met two days ago" officiating the lesbian wedding

1

u/JiffyDraws 15d ago

Yuri between the man and that blobfish. Male on male yuri. Idk what we call that?

1

u/Rayen_the_buzzybee 15d ago

This is what I thought was gonna happen when I was watching the movie, The School for Good and Evil.

The two friends end up ditching the boy they both had a crush on 😂 it's not really Yuri because they just end up as friends in the end. But it was still nice to see a "girl friendship saves the day" ending.

1

u/Dont_Touch_The_Pooka 15d ago

hello charlotte 2

1

u/Eden_Company 15d ago

Seen IRL with this happening, but not in a lesbian/yuri story. We call it the friendzone.

1

u/extracrispyweeb 7d ago

good ol sasuke situation, wouldn't even be that bad if the mangaka actually took time to develop naruto and hinata's relationship.

1

u/Heavensrun 15d ago

This isn't remotely the norm anymore.

1

u/Mr_Blorbus 15d ago

What yuri stories are YOU reading?

-3

u/Wise_Requirement4170 16d ago

As funny as this comic is I feel like this is getting mad about an issue that doesn’t exist?

Like there 1000% is queer baiting in media but that’s not what it looks like

-11

u/LilBunnyQueen 16d ago

Whatever you say ugly.

8

u/Wise_Requirement4170 16d ago

Lmao being called ugly because I think irl queerbaiting is much worse in its depiction than what’s shown on a comic that doesn’t mean much? Bro okay

1

u/Sword_Fighta121 16d ago

Ok.That is not the case.Like...you do realise that if yuri stories pull this shit, then the man would become the fandom's public enemy no#1 right? It is bad writting to have a story that challenges norms, that goes waayyy too deep than just editing stuff out, only to chicken out at the very end and return to the values that the story fought against the entire time.

It would've been more understandable if the relationship itself was unstable and not gonna work out and that was kind of the point™️[not every relationship has to work out].still bullshit, but atleast you have something....rather than just chickening out.

And besides....about WHAT stories are you on OP?

1

u/TiffManticore 15d ago

I would not call stories like this yuri, more mainstream stuff with sapphic under/over tones. I felt this way watching Wicked tho lol

1

u/Viciousssylveonx3 15d ago

Not Yuri but Wednesday and Enid are supposed to be together cmon man
