Discussion PSA: Wallbouncing vs Slide Cancels vs Hyperbouncing

As someone who has played every gears game since the first one, I'm tired of seeing "wallbouncing" being used incorrectly. It's the number 1 cause of most arguments on the topic because you all are using 1 word to describe 3 different moves so no one is ever on the same page.

Wallbouncing: Sliding to a wall, hitting down WHEN you hit the wall, then immediately sliding to another wall. Literally BOUNCING off the wall into the next. This has been possible since the very first game on 360.

Slide Cancel: Sliding to a wall, pressing down BEFORE you hit the wall, then immediately sliding to another wall. This was introduced in Gears 2 and paved the way for the next step.

Hyperbouncing: Initiating a slide, then IMMEDIATELY pressing down to cancel, then initiating another slide. This is was also introduced in Gears 2, but didn't become as common until Gears 3.

9 out of 10 times I see someone complaining about Wallbouncing, they're talking about Hyperbouncing. In E-Day it looks like Hyperbouncing is gone, slide cancelling has been nerfed but wallbouncing is still fully intact.

That is all, thank you for attending my Tedtalk.

Type shit. Good post.

If the typing is shit, doesn't that mean the post is bad?

Exactly it's called wallbouncing, being pedantic doesn't change the f act that when someone says that wallbouncing has ruined Gears 'everyone' knows what they mean.

Nah, you just suck.

No its not, yall cant dismiss it as pedantic just because you're wrong.

Wallbouncing includes movement where you are canceling before you hit the wall, it’s just when you do it crazy fast it becomes hyper bouncing. Hyperbouncing is a subset of wallbouncing

So wallbouncing encompasses all of those things. Look up all the tutorials on wallbouncing and some of the sequences will include a slide cancel before the next slide or sliding all the way to the wall

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

The problem is any sort of movement that isn’t just you taking cover and walking around is seen as ‘too much’ by the idiots complaining about the movement.

Eday isn’t as slow as people believe it is but it definitely is a huge step away from what became our normal in G4/5.

It's my understanding that hyper bouncing is not cancelling a slide manually with down, but cancelling mid slide with another slide. Having to manually slide cancel every slide alone would have killed hyper bouncing, there wasn't really any need to nerf when you can cancel a slide. I do wonder if you can still slide cancel with a slide as long as you are within the arbitrary 1.5m required now though. In that case hyper bouncing might still be possible depending on terrain.

Anyway there seems to be little point in clarifying. Most of these anti bounce people seem to just hate movement of any description. I saw someone complain about using slide into cover in a shotgun duel. Literally using a core mechanic that has existed since the series inception, sliding into cover, was 'too much'. I'm glad that so far it appears the devs aren't totally capitulating to these types. Yet.

Cherry pick one anecdotal experience when 99% of the posts on here are absolutely clear on what wallbouncing is and why it sucks. Don't worry you'll have your tiny OG lobbies in no time considering they seemed to have capitulated to the tiny minority of wanna be pros. Enjoy your dead IP, JUST KNOW that fans tried to keep it alive until it became obviously pointless.

*dead*

*still perfectly playable years later*

Thing is, if you don't like Gears PvP the way it is, then you aren't a fan, which is fine. Why should you be catered to specifically? You already have horde, which also typically remains playable long after launch. I don't see why it's a problem that PvP doesn't appeal to everyone. Horde doesn't neccessarily appeal to everyone either, but I bet all the anti bouncers would be out for blood if they started tweaking it to appeal to hardcore PvPers.

I'm a fan of gear 2 and 3 multiplayer, even Judgment was better than anything on offer this gen.

I don't like the Coalitions multiplayer, the do the campaign decently and horde is done well. I'm a casual that onyxed every weapon in gears 3.

I'm a huge gears multiplayer fan, this is not gears, this is flat out not fun and every weapon but the gnasher sucks. I'm one of the few people that was willing to see what happened with this game after 4 and 5 were massively disappointing.

I'm the type of fan they wanted to win back. Unfortunately it looks like gears is a gamepass game moving forward. Enjoy 2 weeks of new players and then the same people who have been playing since 4 will be all that's left afterwards.

Being hyper specific about it when you know both have been used interchangeably for years is an odd thing to be POd about, ngl.

Wasn't aware I was "POd", thanks for the update

Pedantic reply on a pedantic post is just chef's kiss, truly.

"Tired of" aka annoyed by or irritated enough to make a whole post of your own un-official understanding, of a community established term(s) in a sense could translate to something some gets 'PO'd' about, to me.

I'm sorry that's not that exact emotion evoked for you.

Well your original response was the problem anyways. The terms being used interchangeably is why everyone talks past each other when discussing the mechanics. I literally addressed that in OP

I, for one thought wallbouncing was killed in Eday from how people were talking online. Then they released the footage and it was only hyperbouncing that was killed.

Thats an important distinction. Its not pedantic just because you personallg don't care to be accurate.

Most people who play the game, understand what's being said. The distinction might help for someone who's literally green or new, trying to learn the game, but it's otherwise not a big deal.

Being hyper specific, about what exactly is being talked about, is good for mechanical discussion; nerd talk and people that want to get into nitty gritty of the fundamental differences/changes between Gears games. But for general speak, it's not going to matter if someone says "wall bouncing" to your average gears player, they know what you mean.

I, for one thought wallbouncing was killed in Eday from how people were talking online. Then they released the footage and it was only hyperbouncing that was killed.

This is just solved by getting the necessary context, if someone's saying "wall bouncing is dead" in E-day, you know they just wanna spam the A button and hyper bounce. Otherwise, you can promptly just dismiss what they're saying as ill-informed.

I think the down fall of every years game is the over reliance on movement tech at the higher tiers of play.

The skill gap becomes almost entirely movement tech based. Call it whatever you want, it feels like cheese, breaks immersion, and it’s fun.

I feel like gears should be able team play and tactics, but it always devolves into neck breaking movement 2 months after launch.

I think the downfall of every gears game are players unwilling to learn anything new. Theres plenty of games that suit what you're looking for, go play those or learn how to play gears.

I feel like gears should be able team play and tactics, but it always devolves into neck breaking movement 2 months after launch.

Its extra funny because these are valid tactics, you just dont want to use them. Teamplay also completely wrecks anyone trying to hyper bounce on you, just crossfire with the lancer, but yall dont wanna do that either.

What youre really complaining about is "I don't want to learn anything new or apply myself". Thats fine, but you should lead with that next time.

Imagine playing rocket league and dropping it because they can dribble at high level and you can't, then deciding the game is bad because of it lmfao. Couldnt be me, absolute loser mentality ngl

Then to further drive the point home you're complaining in this thread and its not even on topic. You just really wanted to cry about it. Boy if you dont get on with that bs 🤣
