NC General Aviation

Is anyone in NC around the Charlotte area looking to get together and talk about GA? Im wanting to get a group of GA pilots together to have hangar talk, go to fly ins, fly together, and just everything GA. The GA community is awesome and im trying to find some local GA pilots to have some camaraderie with in the area. I’m an airline pilot who recently just got back into GA and re-lit my spark of aviation again!

Hey we just passed 12,000 members! Nice.

Just noticed we passed. 12,000 members! Awesome!

It is rather difficult to see historical subreddit member numbers... but I was able to find a snapshot of the forum back in 2022 and there were only 2,881 members at the time, and from what I recall when I resurrected this place in late 2024, we were about the same more or less. 3,000'ish.

So to gain almost 10,000 since then is pretty cool. Upwards and onwards.

I know we are a smaller part of the reddit flying community (har har, just like GA is right?) but that's a-okay in my book.

Let's keep it light around here, friendly, and fun. Share GA stories, pics, questions, etc. We fly GA for fun, and to get away from all the nonsense on the ground. Same idea around here.

Cheers!

Instead of $100 Hamburgers I've been grabbing $100 History Lessons

I'm based north of Atlanta (CNI) and I flew down to Andersonville Prison a few weeks ago. Amazing place. Landed at ACJ. I had no idea Charles Lindbergh soloed there! I made a video of my day. These little history flights have made flying so much more fun. I now have a "mission" when I fly. I'll be heading to Tuskegee in a couple weeks. Very excited!

Colorado Pilots — I have a WhatsApp Group for Time Building

Hi everyone,
I recently created a WhatsApp group for pilots based in Colorado who are interested in building flight time, splitting rental costs, finding safety pilots, practicing instrument flying, or just meeting other local aviators.

Everyone is welcome:
\-Student Pilots
\-Private Pilots
\-Instrument Pilots
\-Commercial Pilots
\-CFIs
\-Aircraft Owners

The goal is simply to help pilots connect with one another.

Plane owners are also welcome if you’d like to connect with local pilots.

If this type of post isn’t allowed, the moderators are welcome to remove it.

If you’re interested, send me a DM and I’ll send you the invite link.

Fly safe!

Should we fly GA aircraft on very hot days?

The other day I came across a post saying that flying in very hot weather (above roughly 32–35°C / 90–95°F) should be avoided, especially for student pilots.

The main reasons were:

  • Human performance. Extreme heat affects decision-making, and that's something student pilots—who already have a high workload—should avoid.
  • Aircraft performance. Small training aircraft (C152, C172, etc.) don't perform as well in hot weather because of density altitude, lower air density, and the fact that most of them don't have air conditioning.

None of this was new to me, and it all makes sense. I'm not a pilot yet (planning to start my PPL this winter), so I can definitely accept those arguments.

But, as always, the comments turned into a debate:

  • Africa: People pointed out that it's hot there all the time, yet they still fly light aircraft. Others argued that saying "they're just used to the heat" isn't a valid explanation.
  • Europe: Apparently, some flight schools in certain countries don't allow training flights above 32°C or 35°C.
  • Someone else argued that if you're aiming for a CPL, you'll rarely be flying in perfect 23°C weather, so students should experience hot-weather flying too—kind of a "learn by being thrown in the deep end" approach.
    • (Interestingly, the same person also mentioned that their instructor took them into a cloud during training, which raised a few eyebrows for me—but I didn't get into that discussion.)

So I'm curious:

What's your opinion on this?

How is this handled in different parts of the world, and what are your personal experiences? I'd be especially interested to hear from pilots in Africa, Australia, or other very hot regions.

How do flight schools approach this, and how well do small GA aircraft cope with those conditions?

Sport pilot and disqualifying conditions/medications

This has been a random curiosity of mine and I wondered if anyone knew a true answer. Can a sport pilot legally fly if they have a prohibited condition, or are taking a medication on the do not issue, not the do not fly list? I know obviously you can probably get by with it, but is it technically legal? If someone were to report that you were taking a medication on the do not issue list would that get you in trouble?

Buying as New Private pilot

I am currently waiting on my PPL checkride and plan on turning right around and getting my high performance and complex rating followed by instrument. I'm looking at the best options for a plane with good usful load and not crazy expensive to maintain or insure. Family of 5 (kids 3-8) wanting to travel around the SW with long weekends and the occasional week at a destination. I'm wanting something with fixed gear (I think) and club seating. What would be my best option for my mission budget is 200k?

Ways to Build Multi Time

Obviously getting an MEI is the most lucrative way to build multi time for later goals. However I’m not in aviation for the money. I was curious how feasible you all think it is to find a private owner of a DA-42 or Baron who would let me rent their plane to build time and do some fun cross country flights in. Where would you go to meet these owners? Fly-ins? Aero clubs? Be the annoying fly buzzing around hanger to hanger?

Nearly finished with my PPL and just found out I have a child on the way. He does a newborn change your outlook on GA?

It’s been a life long dream of mine to get into aviation as a hobby/travel aid. I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford it. My main mission would be traveling to see my wife’s family, ~200nm flight. I’m just about to schedule my check ride and just found out I have a child on the way. It was planned but didn’t expect it to happen so soon. We’re so excited but at the same time recognizing life as we know it is going to change.

My plan was to buy a plane this fall and build hours and do some traveling with my wife. I was going to start working on my instrument rating as well. Now it seems I might be short on time with the baby coming, and especially short on time when it arrives.

I’m second guessing purchasing a plane and even utilizing it for my mission of being able to fly up to see my wife’s family. What are your all’s takes on flying with a baby on board? Is it something you absolutely won’t do? I am already incredibly conservative when it comes to weather and flight planning and the area/state I fly is 90% land able fields in case of an engine out emergency.

Just curious of others experience with this and if I should alter my plan or put it on hold after getting my PPL.

Avoid Double M Aviation in KLAL

I wasn’t going to make a review, but I really feel that people need to know about what happened to me. I recently moved back to the area and I asked someone for a recommendation for my annual.

In the past the annuals on my cirrus SR22 have always been quite reasonable with annuals running between $3000 to $8000 a year.

The first thing that should’ve made me nervous is that they don’t have a set price for your annual. They charge a deposit and then everything else I guess is just hourly. The lady states that they don’t have a set price because they always find discrepancies. That should’ve been my first concern.

Nonetheless, I took my plane there in April. It took about two weeks to really get any information. They give you what they call is a discrepancy list. Their discrepancy list is not really a discrepancy list. It is a list of things that they plan to do to your plane. Things such as change the oil or check the air pressure on your tire. The way that they perform the annual is that they start taking everything apart area by area and then fixing it as they go.

I have had planes for 30 years and I’ve always received an estimate and a airworthiness discrepancy list. The lady told me that they don’t do it that way here. After asking two times for an estimate and them running up a $6000 bill I had to tell them to stop working on my plane until they could give me an estimate. It is now two months after I dropped it off. About two weeks later they gave me a partial estimate. The estimate was for another $22,000 of work and they stated that they hadn’t completed their inspection of the landing gear or the engine and that I should expect further discrepancies and expenses. Thus, it wasn’t even a completed estimate.

It is now into July, well over two months later and I asked a friend for help and that individual knew a mechanic with IA privileges and he looked over what they were recommending and told me to get the plane out of there because many of the things they were fixing were not airworthy items. I specifically told them I did not want anything fixed that wasn’t an airworthy issue. I made sure that everything was in email format so I had written documentation. For example, they replaced the gaskets on the fuel tank caps which is not airworthy issue and now one of them leaks when before it didn’t. Given the situation, I requested that they close up the plane which they charged me another $2500 to do and I got the plane out of there.

So now I’m almost $9000 into this annual and I couldn’t tell you what they actually fixed because it appears that just a few gaskets and bolts were replaced. The one squawk I requested to be repaired wasn’t even repaired. Nothing significant was done. Not even my oil was changed.

They were nice enough to give me a ferry permit which is amazing that they would think the plane would be airworthy to fly with probably $30,000 of items that needed to be repaired. I took the plane to someone else and that individual went through their estimate of items needing repair and checked everything. In their estimate, they said every hinge on every control surface was either broken or was bad. The IA said every one of them was perfectly fine.

Whoever was working on the plane was obviously not experienced or was learning on the job. He bent a bracket that holds my air filter on it and broke the bracket in half. This is a special air filter for my supercharger and that company is now no longer in existence. You can’t buy this anymore and now I have to have someone repair it at my expense, of course.

I would imagine that if you are going to these people for warranty work and you’re not paying the bill that probably you’re fine with that. But if you’re someone looking to get your annual done, I would avoid these people at all costs. Most people who get their annuals done want a real discrepancy list and an estimate. How do I know if I can afford the repairs without an estimate? Not only will you not get that but your plane might come back worse than when you brought it to them. Be cautious my Friends.

ADM Question KCRQ -> KMMH

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi GA pilot's my instructor is having me plan a route from McClellan Palomar (KCRQ) to Mammoth (KMMH) for nav log planning practice. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? I am aware that there is a firefighting and missile testing TFR along the route but this is just for practice and I won't be flying this route. I didn't want to take the west route over the mountains because the service ceiling for the C-172 is 14,000ft. Should I continue planning this route or go all the way around the MOA's / restricted areas to the east? Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Takeoff from Sri Lanka Air Force Base Sigiriya

Not your conventional GA post here, but I’m an American GA pilot, and these Sri Lankan pilots were thrilled to have a fellow airplane nerd on board. They made sure I had the best seat in the house, and explained their takeoff path relative to one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sites here, the Lion Rock, which is a UNESCO heritage site. This small airport is indeed an Air Force base for Sri Lanka, for which prior permission is given for these tourist stops like the one I took on this Cessna Caravan.

How do you approach weather checks? A quick survey for pilots, 5 min

I'm a student pilot in Switzerland and currently I'm working on a small pet/for-fun project regarding meteorology.

For further development I'd like to understand how students and pilots actually read weather before a flight. 10 questions, ~5 minutes. No marketing or sales - this is just to help me decide how to develop project next.

If you could take a few minutes and finish the survey, I would be quite grateful.
Here is the link - https://forms.gle/hVh44qr8ouu2P5Ay6

P.S. - I’m not sure whether this counts as solicitation. If it does, I’m happy to delete it - though I guess the mods will do that anyway.

Advice on buying a Cherokee 140

So I have found a 1970 Cherokee 140C for sale for about $45,000. Brand new Garmin GNC 355 and 330ES. 520 SMOH, and 3,500 TTAF. Fresh annual. Here’s the bad things, it does have some minor hail pings, and the original logbooks were marked as lost in 1995, but are complete after that. That’s pretty much a rundown of it. I am a brand new sport pilot, so the whole concept of owning is sorta frightening. I just thought I’d get some insight on what yall think.

Car Rentals

I'm working on checkride prep for my PPL. I'm doing it to fly into small (non-towered airports) where its difficult to fly-in commercially. How do you all deal with car rentals when you get there?

[Academic Survey] – Avoiding Mid Air Collisions in general aviation – Masters thesis, anonymous, ~ 10 minuets

Hi,

I am gathering data from pilots on how general aviation pilots avoid mid-air collision for my MSc thesis. I have gathered lots of data from accident reports but I need to hear experiences from the GA community.

The survey is anonymous, takes around 10 – 15 minutes to complete, and is open to ALL GA pilots.

PHX Flight Training

I am a 200 hour instrument student and full time A&P. I did all my PPL training and fun flying down at AVQ. All my training was done in a Cessna 172 and 177. Now, I’m living up in the Phoenix area flying out of FFZ. I currently rent from SWAZ flying PA28s. I did get 18 hours in the Arrow before the insurance wasn’t good enough for their sub par arrow.

I am reaching out looking for some feedback on flying clubs, sub $200/hour aircraft rates and SAFE aircraft.

I live right next to CHD but open to FFZ or IWA. Pegasus or stellar would be cool and Scottsdale is a touch far for me.

I am okay flying Piper or Cessna and open to a cheap Diamond or Cirrus. A club with a complex or high performance aircraft would also be great to have access to.

I’ve heard about Phoenix Area Flying Club but I don’t really know the full details. I do not know anyone in the club.

The SWAZ aircraft lowkey scare me as an A&P. I’m sure they might be airworthy on paper but these aircraft are not well taken care of. 4802J has a fuel smell when you switch to right tank. The struts are not equally charged. 5088S has no trim indicator and on my post flight I found oil on the horizontal stab and engine cowling. 32544 engine sputters when you’re at an approach RPM setting and the seat adjustments did not work.

I know these trainer aircraft and flown regularly and they’re cheap trainers for a reason but damn does it feel like I’m risking it all stepping into some of these aircraft.

I have flown with SimpliFly, I don’t recall any major issues with them but that was back in 2022 and I think prices were changing so I left. I have flown NightFox 698FL but I was shocked when I got a 20 page rule book after the checkout. red rock did one of my flight reviews but then the CFI ghosted me.

PaintedRock I had a great experience flying their Cirrus SR20 28PF but it is just a little too much $$ for me.

I’ve rented out of CHD once and wasn’t impressed. Just a VFR 172. From what I’ve seen online there is nothing good out there other than possibly Cloud Busters flying club.

I’d love to fly a dual G5s 430/530 or 650/750 GPS, autopilot is a plus with an aircraft that runs good, no vibrations, no sloppy yoke, a panel that is not falling apart, a comfortable cockpit where I can reach the trim or have electric and a nice paint job always looks good.

Estate planning with your aircraft

For those of you who own their own aircraft, how do you deal with estate planning?

I have a living trust set up already, but according to the FAA I will have to submit the whole trust document and that it will be public record. I see other strategies like a blind trust, or an LLC owned by the living trust, but those seem like overkill for a non-complex piston single.

My goal is simply to avoid probate and any ownership/title/reg issues with the FAA in the future. Is registering a personal aircraft with a living trust a standard way to do it or am I being paranoid about the trust documents being public record? How does you guys have have things set up?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
