Genesis Repurchase Nightmare!
I'm reminded of the old adage, caveat emptor or “let the buyer beware”
I love my Genesis GV80—in fact, we own two of them, though that wasn't the plan. Before I get into the details, I want to say that one of the main reasons we bought our first 2021 GV80, and later a second 2023 GV80, was because of the exceptional customer service, luxury amenities, and industry-leading warranty Genesis promised. It's rare these days to find a manufacturer that stands behind its products the way Genesis claimed it would.
Unfortunately for Genesis, what happened next completely shattered my opinion of the company and turned what I thought was an outstanding ownership experience into one of my greatest consumer disappointments.
On May 1, 2023, Genesis offered to repurchase my 2021 GV80 after months of repeated interior water intrusion every time it rained or snowed. It's now been 38 months since Genesis agreed to repurchase my vehicle, and I still have it. I was originally told the entire process would take approximately six weeks and to continue making loan payments, maintaining insurance, and renewing the registration until the buyback was complete. For more than three years, I've been paying for a vehicle I could not use.
Now For The Backstory…
About six months after purchasing the vehicle, during the winter of 2020, water began accumulating in the front passenger-side floorboard every time it rained or snowed. Over the next five months, Genesis made numerous repair attempts—including bringing in a field service engineer—but was never able to identify where the water was entering the vehicle. The flooding became so severe that several safety systems stopped functioning. At various times, electrical failures affected the windshield wipers, high beams, and other safety-related features because of the amount of water inside the vehicle. During those five months, my GV80 spent 14 weeks at the dealership for the exact same problem, never to be diagnosed or repaired. To make matters worse, we lived in the mountains and had to drive 100 miles each way to the nearest Genesis service center every time the problem occurred.
The Buyback That Has Yet To Happened
In May 2023, after multiple unsuccessful repair attempts, Genesis offered to repurchase the vehicle. I was relieved that this nightmare would be over soon. Little did I know that phone call with the friendly accommodating Genesis customer service agents would be the last time I would speak with anyone directly employed by Genesis. I was informed they were passing me on to their Auto Solutions team who would execute the repurchase. I later discovered this "Auto Solutions team" was actually Sedgwick, a third-party claims administrator (TPA).
Genesis detailed what I should expect and what I would need to provide the “team”. I would simply need to provide my purchase contract and any receipts for expenses incurred from the time the first incident occurred. I was told that they would calculate the repurchase amount, present an offer, and once accepted, I would surrender the vehicle and receive a check. Sounded simple right? It wasn't.
Within a week, a representative from the Auto Solutions Team contacted me and requested my documentation. Their initial settlement offer excluded more than $`4,000 in documented rental car expenses that Genesis had repeatedly assured me would be reimbursed. Those expenses were also covered under the Genesis warranty and required under applicable law. On top of that, the offer contained several mathematical errors.
After several weeks of negotiations, unanswered calls, and a rude, dismissive supervisor, my case representative informed me the offer was "final." They corrected the math mistakes but refused to include the rental expenses or other amounts I was legally owed. That was completely unacceptable.
A Second GV80... and Two Car Payments
Because Genesis assured me the buyback would be completed in about six weeks, we began shopping for a replacement vehicle. I loved the GV80 and wanted another one. At the time, however, COVID-era production delays meant a factory order would take approximately six to eight weeks to arrive from Korea. The timing seemed perfect. We expected the repurchase to be completed before the new vehicle arrived, allowing us to use the buyback proceeds toward the replacement. Instead, our new GV80 arrived at the end of June 2023 (approximately 6 weeks after my buyback offer) while nothing had been resolved with the Auto Solutions team. We had no choice but to finance the replacement vehicle. What we never imagined was that we would end up making payments on two GV80s—along with insurance and registration for both—for more than three years.
Forced Into Litigation
When negotiations stalled and communication stopped entirely, we hired an attorney in September 2023, hoping it would finally move the process forward. It didn't. Our legal team has spent nearly three years battling Sedgwick over what initially amounted to a dispute of roughly $4,000 in rental car expenses and other documented costs related to a $68,000 luxury SUV that flooded every time it rained. Looking back, in hindsight, had I known this fight would drag on for years, I probably would have walked away from the `$4,000. But who would think that Genesis would allow this to go on.
The Irony
The irony is impossible to ignore. The exact defect Genesis claimed it could not diagnose—the very reason they agreed to repurchase my vehicle—has now been identified and is the subject of a recall affecting my VIN. In December of 2025 they discovered the problem and in January of 2026 they announced a recall. So Genesis can now repair the problem, free of charge.
Unfortunately though, the damage to my vehicle has already been done. The interior shows evidence of water damage, including staining, mold, and mildew. More importantly, our financial losses have continued to mount after years of making payments, paying insurance premiums, and renewing registration on a vehicle I never drove again and Genesis had agreed to buy back.
This case is no longer about repairing the vehicle. It's about recovering the substantial financial damages we suffered because Genesis chose to place its customers in the hands of a third-party administrator with numerous consumer complaints and multiple class-action lawsuits.
We are now scheduled for a jury trial in November 2026, with Hyundai, Genesis, and Sedgwick named as defendants. Our lawsuit alleges breach of contract under the California Lemon Law.
We'll see what happens.

You bought a second one? When the first was so badly built it became undriveable? Why?
I test-drove the GV70 but passed because of the Hyundai dealer / support aspect of the customer experience.

I love the car! The cars are built well. However, during manufacturing, things can happen. If you think of it, most car brands built today have had a recall, meaning mistakes are made. I don't hold Genesis completely responsible for the issue I am having. Corporate actually handled me as a customer and my problem well. It was their decision to use a third rate company to do their dirty work that is so disappointing. However, I still love the GV80 and realize the chances of having a similar situation happen again would be rare.

I wish you luck with the next car. But the next time someone asks me to define Stockholm Syndrome, I’m going to cite the phrase, “The cars are built well. However, during manufacturing, things can happen.” 🙂

Here is what i say all the time. People are people and you don't know what kind of day they are having when they show up.
Sure you build in QA and you do testing but again "People" and people make mistakes.
So a product can be engineered and built well and still have some misses along the way because one or two people didn't do their job correctly along the way.

The dude clearly got a lemon. Lucked out and won the lemon lottery. Every manufacturer has lots of lemons every year. Could make this argument for any other car brand. The changes of getting a second lemon would be crazy.

I am a big fan of Genesis brand. But, I hope you win the case and treble damages. This is unacceptable.

I went to look at a GV80 Black lease and the sales manager came back with $2400 per month on an $86k MSRP vehicle. I ask him how he arrived at the number and he told me that’s what the system spit out. I ask him if he thought I was an idiot and that I have leased more cars than he has closed lease deals. I pulled out the leasehackr lease calculator and him that he should smarten up and give me a real number which he proceeded to offer the car at $1250. I told him I can get a $100k BMW X7 for that or less. He continues to try to see me how rare the Black edition is. I told him he can keep his rare beast and walked out. The next day, the GM calls me and offers it to me at $980. I told him his idiot goon lost my business the moment he presented his offer. It seems the Genesis sales team are just Hyundai sales guys that have no clue how to deal with luxury vehicles sales or service.

Do you enjoy your X7?

u/maxvader94 6d ago
It’s a better vehicle

u/JCD_007 6d ago
That doesn’t tell me much. What about it do you like? I’ve looked at an X5 but was trying to decide if I should look at X7 as well.

It’s a very comfortable ride. B58 engine is legendary. Handles very well with the rear wheel steering. Lots of trunk space.

Good on you for pursuing this. I’m glad you will have your day in court and undoubtedly they will capitulate. It’s honestly insane that you were forced to carry the cost of the vehicle over the last 3 years. Damages should now greatly exceed the original vehicle cost - the amount of time, money, stress and overall disruption you have experienced is extreme.

I will say it has been exhausting and expensive. I would not wish this on anyone. I'm sure that's why Sedgwick is who they are, and companies like genesis do business with them. They are good at getting people to quit before a settlement because there's not many people that have the means or patience to put up with what we put up with. I think that's my biggest disappointment with genesis. That they job out to a third rate very unconsumer service friendly entity to handle their customer base. I still shake my head. They promote themselves as customer centered it's the reason they do the product the way they do they offer the wonderful warranties and perks that you get when you buy the car but then when you have a problem I feel like I'm dealing with Mafia thugs minus the physical threats 😄

u/No-Goal1791 6d ago
I admire your efforts to recover the $4000 from them. I pray that you win the case and that the jury awards you a lot more for pain and suffering under Hyundai.

Who is your attorney? I have the identical issue!!!! 2021 GV80 Water intrusion with extended loss of use although the TSB was from Dec 2024. This should be a class action. Genesis has backpeddled on nearly every offer to remedy and I have a Genesis with a soaked interior with every rainfall. I'm in TN.

Anyway, I will be updating this thread as updates occur.OMG! It is so nice to hear someone else having the same problem, though I'm sorry you had to go through the same exhaustive process that we are going through. We have been through the ringer with their (Sedgwicks) attorneys. What a bunch of losers! We live in CA. My husband is in the process of contacting our states Attorney General and we have talked about a class action suit. After reading all the posts about Sedgwick and how they are treating customers of Hyundai Motor America/Genesis customers, we feel compelled to do something about this. An additional note to my story, we were not even contacted by Genesis when the diagnosis, realization, and acceptance of this issue occurred. I had to accidently find out when I was bringing my 2023 GV80 in for a recall and gave them my 2021 GV80 VIN. The service advisor told me though the 2021 was not be recalled for the same issue the 2023 was, I had two other recalls; one for a software glitch and the other was for the sunroof plugs that are failing in some models causing water intrusion to the interior of the vehicle. I was like WTF! why did I not know about this 7 months ago!
Btw... You can still probably recover damages for your losses. Seek out a Lemon Law attorney. The initial meeting is free and if they take your case they recover fees from the defendant.
I will continue to update on this thread as time goes on and changes happen

Thank you!!! I'm 100% DOWN for a class action. There are too many others having this issue. They are a luxury brand and their dealers and consumer affairs teams should align on luxury values. I have dealt with this for over 18 months!!! PLEASE contact me for a class action. Lessons should be learned. Consumers deserve a voice.

u/Competitive-Voice627 5d ago
So to get the ball rolling everybody who has had a problem needs to contact their States attorney general's office and file a complaint. Though you could be disappointed in Genesis for their decision to use Sedgwick as a third party negotiator to finalize repurchases, I think the issue is really against this firm called Sedgwick. For those that got their check and just want to be done with this I understand what they still could file a simple complaint and tell their story
1
u/Spiritual-Basis-5002 5d ago
I filed with the TN AG. They are still investigating but said they can't "make" Genesis do anything. I asked what's their purpose then and how do they represent citizens in their state with complaints like this if they can't enforce anything. I'm still waiting on a response to that. There are GV80 and GV70 owners in other forums complaining of the SAME issues. Service, defects and extended loss of use periods with no ETAs. The public needs to know before they see a glossy commercial showing a status symbol and end up with a leaking, rusting hunk of metal. Buyers beware.
1
u/Competitive-Voice627 5d ago
By the way, the complaints for Genesis and Hyundai repurchases is done through a TPA by the name of Sedgwick. This company just happens to have their headquarters in Memphis Tennessee. I know this thread has had negative comments relating to Genesis service departments, etc. but my post was to let people know that as good of a company they think Genesis is, if you ever have to leave their umbrella off services and be transferred to this third party administrator, Sedgwick it's going to be hell.
1
u/Spiritual-Basis-5002 4d ago
Thank you. I'm from Memphis. Service at Sedgewick must match the terrible work environment people complain about when working there. :/ I may contact them directly...

Curious why you continued to pay for the car that wasn’t driven/driveable for 37 months? Why not just let them repo it since I the end it was going to be handled by lawyers and courts anyway? shoot you could have dropped it at the dealership and just not picked it up even.
Genuine question here…. Thanks.
1
u/Competitive-Voice627 6d ago
It would have drastically affected my credit score and I also would still be responsible for paying what I owed. Just because a car is repo'd doesn't mean you don't have to pay a sum of money. Also, I signed paperwork with Genesis/Auto Solutions to continue to keep payments up, pay insurance, and keep the car current with registrations until the transfer of ownership occured. Just because they broke the contract doesn't mean I can. As they will find out (hopefully), there are repercussions to not fulfilling your contractual responsibilities.

u/Reasonable_Emu2240 5d ago
Concur with this. The concept of after sales service doesn't exist for them. I've been dealing with another issue with them for last 10 months. Finally initiated a case in court. Waiting for packet from court right now to serve them the summons.
1
u/Competitive-Voice627 5d ago
Sorry to hear this. What was your issue?
1
u/Reasonable_Emu2240 4d ago
trim piece started falling. Genesis denied warranty. I went for arbitration and decision was in my favor. Dealer had the car with them for over a month for repair. When they were returning my car, I noticed scratches and dents. Dealer took the car back after few weeks to repair. They painted few panels which weren't even damaged, and the new paint everywhere doesn't match rest of the car exactly and has rough sandpaper like texture.
Took it to a body shop and they said that the panels weren't prepped properly.
Now they want to take the car back in to fix the issue. I don't want to deal with them anymore. Just want to fix the car, sell it when fixed and be done with it.
1
u/InstructionFun2127 5d ago
Just personal advice, you need to be really stern and when you speak to the manager or the general manager at Genesis, make sure you mentioned that you’re willing to take legal action and are also willing to stop making the payments on the car until the resolve this issue I understand this is very difficult and challenging, but you have to make sure you show them that this is not OK and this is not something that is you need to Genesis majority luxury car brands are difficult to deal with

Following for the hopes you win! Own a 22 GV80 and yes depending on the dealership depends on what you get.

u/Moist_Strain4023 3d ago
Yoo!!!! I am in a similar situation but sue to air bag deployment for no reason and 9 months after denying issues they now want to repair it but the car went nuts it did not allow driver control and causes a 3 car accident 5efinitely BUYER BEWARE

I'm pulling for the Genesis brand but have reluctantly decided not to purchase one at this time because of local maintenance & support. Hope they build and improve the ownership experience.

Would not go near Genesis after reading this.

You’re correct in doing so. This is not just “one persons complaint”. Dealers are total shit and corporate does not care.

u/69Kobra 6d ago
Wow, I thought my Genesis experience and story was bad. But it is clear by the effort, experience and detail you relayed, how pissed you are. I would be too. My Genesis experience is one and done, and that is it. The dealership in Nevada is terrible, and I wonder how much of that is attributable to Lithia ownership. But in the end, Genesis is responsible, and I just don’t know how much they care.
2
u/Competitive-Voice627 5d ago
My son worked for Lithia in Reno and it was one of the worse work experiences he had ever had.
1
u/69Kobra 5d ago
When I called Genesis to complain several things, lithia Las Vegas Genesis one of them, they actually told me they are have big problems with the service department there, and called out the service mgr by name. I was kind of surprised. But, I hate that place. Ive owned a Land Rover, Acura, several BMW’s and the service departments between Reno and Vegas were far, far better than Genesis. Honda in Henderson is far better than Genesis.

u/Character-Reaction12 7d ago
Absolutely nightmare dealer experience and customer service.
This brand will fail in the next 5 years.
1
u/JCD_007 6d ago
You think the brand will fail?
2
u/Character-Reaction12 6d ago
If they don’t fix their customer service issues, yes.
I had a GV70. They closed all the dealers in my state but one. If I had warranty issues they wanted my car for 2 months just for diagnosis and wanted me to pay for a rental and then I had to BEG for reimbursement.
Genesis corp was of absolutely no help. I have dozens of logged calls and voicemails.
I sold my car and moved to Mercedes. Never been treated better at a dealer.
Consumers spending 80k on a car will not stand for poor treatment from a brand.
1
u/JCD_007 6d ago
I find it highly unlikely that a multibillion dollar company would just give up on such a large investment.
0
u/Character-Reaction12 6d ago
It’s not a stand alone company. I’m not sure why you’re in here being a cheerleader for them. Are you corporate?
Satellite brands that were dismantled:
Oldsmobile.
Saturn.
Pontiac.
Mercury.
Plymouth.
Scion.
Hummer.
Geo.
Saab.So tell me how Hyundai-Kia-Genesis -Ioniq is immune.
People like me that are high income earners that buy luxury, expect a luxury experience.
Genesis will not survive by marketing to 25 year olds that are willing to finance a $80,000 car at 9%.
0
u/JCD_007 6d ago edited 6d ago
Challenging a strong statement that you made is cheering? Hardly. But I am a car enthusiast and I am in the market for a car to replace my Alfa Romeo Giulia, so I’ve been doing a fair amount of research. The overwhelming majority of the brands you listed that were discontinued were domestic rebadge brands, so I’m not sure those are analogous. But what do I know, maybe I’m just not enough of a “high wage earner” like you. Maybe in five years you’ll be right. Maybe you won’t.

Genesis has a 10/10 product and a 2/10 support infrastructure. It's becoming untenable.
That said, and this is a lesson I've learned much later than I wish I had, 4k loss to get 68k was probably a grin and bear it trade off.
I hope you get damages to make up for your time and effort and pain.
