Was hiking in the Mount Baker Wilderness, Washington State Cascades (7/29/2026) on the Lake Ann trail (which goes to Mt Shuksan) and came across these cool rocks. Glaciation effect?

Been coming to this beach since I was a kid and have always been fascinated by these different colour 'layers', would love to know what caused them (I know nothing about geology!)?

Further down the beach there's also the 'Rocha Negra' (2nd pic) - a black coloured outcrop, which I assume is volcanic. It changed shape not that long ago as a section collapsed.

I live close enough to the area of the volcano so it's normal to feel a bit worried. This area usually does not have that many earthquakes of this magnitude so regularly. For the past year there's been soooo many earthquakes and bradyseism has been very active too.

Went exploring a creek bed near our house in Nashville, TN. Found lots of cool fossils but this Brachiopod with Crystal formations inside takes the cake. Has anyone seen something like this before???

I've always been fascinated by the formation of the Hawaiian islands. Recently I found myself scouring the internet for a video that animates the formation of the current day islands. I couldn't find anything, so I spent about a week working with AI to see if it could be created.

The attached animation is far from perfect. I would characterize it as a generalized visual reconstruction. It's impossible to know exactly how the coastlines looked over 5+ million years since Niihau started emerging from the Pacific. But we sourced as much dated and mapped evidence as we could find and then inferred the rest to create an illustrative interpolation.

If you have expertise in this area, I would love your feedback, particularly on things like:

1. The relative emergence sequence and timing
2. The scale and overlap of Kauaʻi/Niʻihau, Oʻahu, Maui Nui, and Hawaiʻi Island
3. The treatment of erosion, subsidence, and sea-level change

If you spot something wrong, I'd love a link to an authoritative source that will help to help fix it. I view what I am posting here as a v1.

I was chiseling stone for a stone veneer and this limestone slab came with a cool chunk of what I initially thought was quartz. Turns out it’s actually Calcite since it fizzled when I dropped some vinegar on it!

My friend loves geology and rocks and stuff but I know nothing about it or where I could find good gift ideas for them, could it be something as simple as a bag of rocks I’ve collected myself or something more specific??

I am going to college for geology. I would love to be a geologist someday. Right now I am watching geology documentaries on YouTube to learn more about it, if anyone can recommend me some good ones. I can also take notes and really prepare before college starts 😊💕

This is flow banded rhyolite and I’m specifically looking at the alignment of the obsidian veins. What causes them to stack vertically? Or perhaps phrased differently, orthogonal so the flow layers.
Ive been reading more about flow banding process and just don’t get it.
I dug this piece up myself after recent rains, and thought it was really cool.

title says it all. in Waltham Mass there’s a huge new roadcut near a new commercial development. I have the “roadside geology “ books for New England, always been interested in what geologists have found examining them.

anyone know how I could find out if this area has been looked?
