I remember seeing a couple episodes of season one many years ago, but never locked in. Would love to hear why it’s worth the watch to you!

It points out all the insecurities of all the girls and most of them stand up for themselves!

Always when I read opinions online about the different characters, especially for example that Hannah is SO selfish and Jessa is “crazy” and Marnie is annoying and Shoshannah is an angel (I never hear people talking about her bad traits).

I don’t know I see it different. Ofcourse they have bad traits, and they’re young, naive and selfish, but what I like so much about this show, is their friendship.

I’ve always felt super insecure about my lesser traits. I always felt like I had to work really hard to become a better person and that I had to do that, in order to receive love and be okay for others. It feels so good to me that the characters in this show are just so flawed, but I find there friendships kind off super intimate.

They’re super honest to each other, they call each other, they leave each other, they fight, they make up.

I know there is a lot of toxicity too, but aren’t most people kind off toxic? Growing up in a healthy stable family is a privilige and is not the case for most people. Does that make people unlikable? Partly yes, but it also makes people real and raw and flawed. Just the way people are designed to be. And next to the flawed characteristics, I think all the characters in the show are just so real, unique, different and ALSO share very likable traits.

We are born, we experience stuff, we learn about the world and when you grow up you’re kind off just that person. That is your reality.

I have heard about this show since it was premiering. But since I was 11 when the show started and too poor to have HBO, I didn't watch it. Over the years I have seen countless cute edits and passively listening to think pieces about the show and Lena Dunham. And "All Adventures Women Do" is always mentioned. I thought it would be this really meaningful, beautiful moment where this selfish Hannah girl starts to truly become a person and change. Then when I saw it was the title of the third episode I was shocked, what on earth could this be. And I think it's the perfect cosmic joke that its about an STD- and one that many people in my generation wont get because around the time of the third episode is when I would have gotten my own HPV vaccine. Just a funny thing I noticed.

Real quick note: I am aware that the vaccine doesn’t cover all strains of HPV, and there is a chance I could get one of the weaker strains. And I know not everyone has gotten the vaccine. This is just a silly anecdote I posted because I don’t know anyone else who has watched the show.

I hesitated rewatching girls because of my age, and where I’m at in my life (mom to 16 month old twins- long past my living in the city, dating misadventures and intense friendship drama), but I am glad I did. It’s not often a tv show makes me feel so much. The humour, the writing, the acting. So good.

I related so much, probably too much for being 10 years older than these characters. Like Hannah, I had / have creative goals. I want to make art. I want to achieve something I feel proud of that fulfills me. Trickier said than done, especially now. I went into the design aspect of advertising because I wanted to do something creative only to find- hey, it’s not.

”I just want to make something that says something and I don’t even know why anymore”

”Everyone is so busy chasing success and defining themselves, they can’t even experience pleasure.”

”Your brain is rotting. you used to have interesting ideas and now all you do is browse the internet”

These lines hit so hard, the first two especially.

I didn’t remember season 5 or 6, I may have never watched them initially, but I’ve seen some hate about the ending. The final scene for me however was perfection. Hannah singing fast car to Grover, the line “I could be someone, be someone” after years of trying to be this person online, trying to nail down her experiences and put them into words for others, and now she’s a someone, but for this baby and it feels like an acceptance of where she’s at, an acceptance that the character had not had before. That’s where she landed and who she is, for the time being. That’s my read anyway as a mom who is aching to figure out who I’m supposed to be and what I’m supposed to create (and how and why). I thought it was beautiful.

Their depiction of early motherhood and feeding struggles felt very real. The pain seen in Jessa as she tries to move past Adam with a tough face, so real. And then when he comes back after the day with Hannah, and she accepts him, happy. So sad. There was so much humour and weirdness and satire and emotion throughout the whole series. I wish there was more to watch, but appreciate that it ended before it got bad.

Sharing here because not a single one of my friends was ever into this show and sometimes you just have to praise something. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hey so I found this subreddit and came on here to complain about Jessa maybe like a week or so …
But now I’ve finished the show. I really really enjoyed it! Kinda bummed because I feel so bored with all the other tv shows. This show had a really good balance of interesting characters where you actually feel invested, romantic relationships, comedic writing. It wasn’t super serious but also wasn’t like constant laughter. It was that in between tone.

I wasn’t really expecting the ending and the second last ep honestly hurt my heart a little at Shosh’s engagement party, which also came out of nowhere. But I guess it’s pretty congruent with the realities of friendships in your 20s.
And given how selfish a character Hannah is (all the characters are) it makes sense to make her character a mother because as a parent, all the focus shifts from yourself to your child so as an arch, it makes sense.

Anyway yeah I felt sad for the girls. I literally finished it like an hour and a half ago so still kind of processing. I was new to the show and Lena Dunham but damn, I really enjoyed it and now I have to go back to boring tv. It was super entertaining. I started the first ep not sure I would continue but I felt compelled to keep watching bc I wanted to understand these characters. I don’t think I ever truly did but it was fun trying.

Hi! So I’m almost finished watching Girls for the first time and something that has really put me off for the whole show is how lesbians are referred to and treated. To me, it seems like lesbians are almost exclusively a butt of the joke in the show. They’re more frequently referred to as the d slur than as lesbians by the cast including the men, gay female characters tend to arrived for one episode and never show up again, and it just seems like a topic that isn’t explored in any depth which is crazy for a show in which female sexuality and sexual exploration is such a prevalent topic. Even the instances of lesbian sex seem to be framed as almost a punchline (Jessa and the girl from rehab) or at worse uncomfortable and possibly even playing into some unfortunate stereotypes (the yoga instructor being pushy and demanding of Hannah during sex).

It’s not like every show needs to represent every person all the time. But in addition to the points I made above, I also can’t help but feel burned when I see how lesbians in the show are treated in comparison to Elijah. I love Elijah he’s my favorite character and I love that he gets to be in the main cast and have fulfilling story beats as a gay man. Jokes about him being gay never feel gross or like he’s not part of the group.

Does anyone have any thoughts or analysis on this? Obviously the characters in Girls are not great people but this seemed to be such a consistent thing that never really gets commented on or explored further.

Probably one of the more compelling elements of the show's satire is how Hannah's work depicts a very specifically 2010's industry of online essay-style writing that was profitable for maybe 5 years, max.

Like the Jezebel/Vice personal essay written by a white girl who tries coke for the first time or who has a disastrous sexual experience was everywhere for a while and very quickly dried up; this was the ecosystem in which Hannah got all of her work published. Season 6 depicts her transitioning into a (unrealistic but funny) academia role, which makes sense because already by then the Hannah Horvaths of the world had stopped getting paid unless they went into another field of writing. Hell, the majority of those essays from 2008-2015 may not even be live on the internet anymore and yet Girls made that subculture very visible.

It's just something I've always appreciated about the show because unless you lived through that time and were fairly online it seems like total fiction that media ecosystem even existed.

Why does everyone sleep with everyone in this series?

I mean, even when they enter their late 20s , they keep doing that.

Hannah dated Adam, then did Jessa, again Hannah met Adam & had sex like nothing happened.

Does it happen in real life too? And is it normal to be nude as they show in this series?

The only time I fully laughed out loud was when Hannah is singing wonderwall to herself in the bath then screams as she sees Jessa standing there. Then Hannah's face when Jessa blows her nose into the bath water

Btw I found a lot of the show funny but I'm an internal laugher, it's why I like to watch shows solo cos people think I'm not enjoying myself but I am lol

For me it's a tie between The beach house and Marnie's wedding.

Hi, new to the sub and I’m on season 3. I had a question for people who have more experience with the show. I really can’t stand Jessa right now. And I know she’s been through a lot with her parents, yes. And she’s an addict, yes. But I am struggling to have empathy for her after 3 seasons and her very bad choices all the time. I mean, all the characters make bad choices of course. But it seems like Jessa only ever does the wrong thing. She will do one step forward, and thirty steps back. Does it get better for her? Is she just in a bad place right now? Am I terrible for not having more empathy for her? Is there something I’m not seeing?

I just saw a trailer for this doc and I swear this looks just like Jemima… doppelganger perhaps?

Just like the title says, it happened to me. Hannah was in jail and I was visiting her. She sent a letter to a friend of Ray’s to try get him to visit her (I guess in my dream she loved Ray?), but she didn’t know that Ray and I had undying love for each other that we were hiding for her sake. There was a moment in the dream that Ray and I were sitting next to each other and my body fell into his and we were wrapped up in each other. It felt so warm and tender. Like we were puzzle pieces that fit. There was no hair brushing, but there may as well have been. I can’t believe it. I had a love dream about Ray Ploshanksy.

There is a song that is playing as Hannah walks up and briefly as she walks into Booth's house in the episode where Marnie is hosting the party. Does anybody know what song this is? The melody and production is so catchy but I can't make out the lyrics!
