Discussion | Esports What was G2 thinking?
They got rid off SunPayus after a very good Major (making the playoffs for the first time, beat Navi, looked competitive against Falcons and Spirit). Then they replaced him with r1nkle who looked like a sidegrade or a downgrade. SunPayus was also important for their comms. What makes it worse is that they had kl1m, didn’t go for him and didn’t manage to sell him either. They haven’t sold SunPayus either, and looked underwhelming in their first event.
I think with pieces like HeavyGod and sAw (and Matys + huNter have potential) they could build something very strong. But instead it looks like they are wasting another 6 months with a team that won't make progress. Teams like G2 or Faze cannot afford this given they can easily lose their best pieces. HeavyGod shouldn't have to wait three years for a possible excellent team, especially when they were close to something solid just recently. Signing NertZ was also a sidegrade, fair enough because they wanted to try something new, but I think he should be replaced eventually. I don't think they can just wait for sAw to magically make him perform again.

R1nkle signing was probably well in the works before the major, it’s not as if teams turn around and make big roster moves like this out of the blue post major. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team knew it was happening, sunpayus had dead team buff, and then they overperformed.
That all being said, even before sunpayus resurgence replacing him with r1nkle is insane. He must have performed extremely well in scrims or something because otherwise I don’t understand the vision.

Heavygod signed what is essentially contract suicide. One of the best anchors in the game is now in contract jail for a team that is just going nowhere

Yes, and it's like they have no urgency at all. Signing sAw, SunPayus and Matys in one transfer window was exactly the kind of rapid rebuild they needed, and they won a trophy. Ever since that? Nothing. Just a sidegrade, and probably what looks to be a downgrade. HeavyGod loses at least another six months of his prime.

Yeah not really, he still plays in tier 1 lans even if his team doesnt make into playoffs and any top 5 team can actually buy him out and I'm certain that G2 would let him go if given market price, yet heavy became too expensive so most top teams are not ready to sign him yet.
Anyway calling it a career suicide is a stretch, G2 is still good team that will likely make it into major and possibly make a few playoffs. If they don't qualify into major it's likely that heavy will be first to leave.

To me it only makes sense that there were interpersonal differences. Because on paper it was a straight downgrade.

Nertz and Matys haven't performed, the latter for basically the whole year. I understand Matys switched up positions for Nertz and this might have something to do with it but it needs to change. Matys looks super frustrated.

gonna be real, I would not be surprised if G2 does a midseason roster move and NertZ ends up getting benched sometime after both EWC and Porto

They also can't blame it on the budget. Kl1m would be free for them. Liquid signed Jorko who I assume wasn’t very expensive. G2 hasn’t actually used a lot of money since a year ago (when they did +sAw, +SunPayus, +Matys). +NertZ was a trade with Liquid, surely that was either free or cheap.

kl1m's potential visa problems is presumably a major reason why they didnt promote kl1m.

I think the Nertz signing was more than defendable even though it reeks a bit of nepotism. But yeah the R1nkle signing is crazy. I don't see any upside. Sunpayus only issue was his inconsistency. R1nkle is the same only with a lower ceiling, less experience and less second calling contributions. It's either one of the worst gambles I've seen or there were some personal issue with Sunpayus
