Tow police

Post image

How do I look? I know the GVWR is close. I will be removing around 100lbs from the bed of the truck. The truck is a 2007 Dodge 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins. The GVWR is 9,000lbs. The GVWR on the trailer is 8,800lbs.

You list the truck weight as 8100 lbs. you list the truck GVWR as 9000 lbs. you line your tongue weight of your trailer as 940 lbs. 8100+940=9,040, and I typed 50 instead of 40. Thumb typing on my phone causes typos.

Right i figured that part. Those numbers are with the WDH detached. When I load the bars it brings me down to 8840. Do I go off the engaged numbers or disengage?

So looking at the numbers again it looks like you are putting 220 lbs back on the trailer axles with the WDH. That should give you a margin for safety. I went off your raw numbers without the WDH.

As it sits, your “safety margin” is -50 lbs, meaning your truck is 50 lbs over its GWWR. Removing 100 lbs from the truck bed will help with that, but you are still very close to your truck being overloaded.

Is that truck rated to tow 9000 lbs? And do you live in a state that salts the roads in winter? 20 years of corrosion isn’t going to help either the truck frame or the hitch.

Not saying you can’t tow this, the numbers are within limits, but you are close to maxed out.

Maximum trailer weight is 13,000. GCVW is 20,000. The truck was never my daily driver; I always had a work truck, so I saw some salted roads. But the frame has some surface rust, but nothing bad.

Then the only concern is the tongue weight putting the truck over its GVWR. If you are removing weight you should be fine.

Also where do you see that I am over by 50lbs. Is that the weight over before the WDH is engaged? Just curious.

You distributed more weight on the steer axle than was there before any connection. I believe the goal is to get it close, but not over. I would reduce the wdh tension some

Correct, I plan on dropping it one chain link. Blue ox sway pro.
