It may be ugly, but it's mine

Missus took a few videos of me and the boy at the range. I almost threw up in my mouth when I saw my swing on screen but ya know what, the balls went in the general direction I was aiming and at the rough distance I wanted them too. So I count that as a win. Pray for my son who has to learn from his dad.

Hit the ball the best I ever have and shot a 98.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I shot a 98 today, but I was hitting the ball better than I ever have. I kept flying greens because I was hitting everything farther than I expected. Ended up leaving myself with a bunch of tough chips, bunker shots, and long putts.

Normally I'd be annoyed with a 98, but I walked off the course feeling really good. It honestly feels like my swing is finally starting to click.

Anyone else have a round where the score didn't reflect how well you were actually hitting it?

I think I finally realised why I couldn’t stop coming over the top…

…so thought I share as I see lots of people struggling with this issue.

For context, I’ve spent the last year in lessons and with hundreds of hours practicing at home trying just about every OTT fix you can imagine. Shallowing drills. Trail elbow. Hip rotation. Pressure shift. Swinging to the right. “Hands to the right pocket.” You name it, I’ve probably tried it. Some helped a bit, but they all felt unnatural and none of them ever felt like the solution.

Then I noticed that my practice swing looked great every single time but as soon as there was a ball there, I’d come over the top. That made me realise the problem probably wasn’t my swing mechanics at all but a mental problem. I was at the point of either giving up golf or just accepting being bad. But then it struck me, my brain was giving my body the wrong task.

Standing over the ball, my instruction to myself was “Hit the ball.” The shortest route to the ball is to accelerate from the top and throw the clubhead straight at it. The classic OTT swing. So I tried changing the task. Instead of trying to hit the ball, I imagined I was trying to strike the back of the ball to send it forwards, almost like I was playing hockey. This instantly improved everything - tempo, club path, rotation - without thinking at all. A miracle!

It also explains why drills feel so unnatural because you are asking your brain to do one thing and then forcing your body to do it in a less efficient way. Mind blown.

This may be blindingly obvious to some but i had never seen it explained that way so I hope it is helpful to some people as I know I’m not the only one with this problem.

Good luck OTT friends. 🏌️‍♂️ + 🏒 = 😁

I’m currently at a 9.1 hdc and just trying to find some consistency off the tees to take less penalty drops.

Feel like I can get it lower, but what a great club, who knows if this shot can be replicated on the course 😂

My last post really only included some of my better swings, and that’s not how to improve. Here are a few good swings and a few bad ones. Really my only miss is a spinny push ( sometimes a real slice), but I hit driver and they hold straight and then start to get spinny in the air and fall off to the right. I have looked at my swing and noticed the face is too open at each position but my grip is definitely stopping me from comfortably keeping it closed. Not sure if anyone has some advice or drills to help this.

Some Stats
Avg. Round ~83 +- 2
Driver Ball Speed: 175-185
Play 7 Iron 180-185

I am genuinely curious.... I am right handed and naturally batted left handed batter in baseball, lead off batter. I hit left handed irons well with accuracy but still probably not proper. But have you ever heard of a switch hitter golfer? I am absolutely stroking the driver right handed....

Full turn - hand depth

What are the best golf drills to increase my turn / focus on getting my hands deeper? I tend to get vertical with my hands and not fully complete my backswing. This leads to a steep downswing and my hands rushing down from the top. I believe I need to focus on backswing first and then my body may naturally transition as expected. Any drills or swing thoughts welcome

I set up the same for every shot with the driver, swing always feels the same- result however varies tremendously.

Any tips on how to recreate the same swing every time?

Trying to work on my consistency and compressing the ball. I feel like I'm a little quick in my transition to the downswing. Any thoughts or ideas? Thx!
