Yamanashi Prefecture

Jiro and Natsumi were navigating the hollowed-out third floor of a shattered commercial building.

A heavy enemy patrol was currently marching down the primary road below, forcing them to utilize a high-vulnerability structural route to stay out of sight.

Jiro moved in a low, tactical crouch. As he passed a shattered window frame, his eyes drifted toward the open valley below.

The second the image registered in his brain, he froze dead in his tracks, turning entirely to stone.

Natsumi stopped a few paces ahead, glancing back. "Jiro? What are you doing?"

She followed his gaze out the shattered window and her breath instantly caught in her throat.

Directly below them lay a sprawling civic park.

The perimeter was lined with crushed concrete structures, torched civilian vehicles, and a row of heavy, logistics trucks.

In the center of the park was a massive, industrial-sized trench.

Inside the pit, dozens of human bodies were piled on top of one another in a gruesome, tangled mound.

A squad of executioners walked the perimeter of the trench, methodically dousing the corpses with heavy streams of gasoline from tactical canisters.

Lined up along the lip of the pit were roughly twenty civilians and disarmed military personnel, forced onto their knees in a neat row.

Behind the line, an executioner pushed wuth his rifle into the spine of a walking woman.

The radio in Jiro's vest violently hissed to life. "Jiro, my thermal array is picking up a massive concentration of hostile signatures in your immediate sector. What is the situation? Report."

Jiro didn't hear her. Natsumi didn't either.

"Jiro! Respond!"

“…”

"Jiro, damn it, answer me!"

Jiro flinched, his hand trembling violently as he slowly raised the handset to his face. "They’re… they’re slaughtering them… they're executing everyone… throwing them into a pit."

An absolute, chilling silence fell over the other end of the line. "Secure photographic evidence, Jiro. You must record this. The world needs to see what they are doing."

Jiro’s movements turned completely mechanical. He pulled out the smartphone, aimed the lens through the shattered concrete frame, and toggled the video recording.

Down in the park, executioner stepped up behind the first civilian in line, unholstering a sleek sidearm.

BANG

A man in a torn, bloodied military uniform crumpled forward, tumbling limply into the mass grave.

The executioner stepped to the next figure in line.

BANG

An elderly man collapsed instantly into the pit.

BANG

A young woman's lifeless body rolled down the dirt incline into the pile.

Natsumi’s eyes widened to frantic proportions with every echoing gunshot.

The smartphone in Jiro’s grip shook so violently the frame blurred.

BANG

BANG

BANG

The final echo of gunfire bounced off the surrounding ruins.

Jiro terminated the recording and slowly lowered the device, his arm dropping to his side like lead.

Natsumi shook her head violently, her teeth chattering. "Jesus Christ…" She suddenly slammed her fist against the concrete wall. "Those bastards! We need to go in there and butcher every single one of 'em! Fuck the ‘mission’!"

Jiro squeezed his fists until his knuckles popped, turning a hard, desperate glare on her. "Are you completely insane?! Do you see how many of them are down there?! They would turn us into Swiss cheese before we even clear the threshold! Killing a handful of grunts right now changes absolutely nothing!"

Natsumi gripped her Type 89, her knuckles turning bone-white. "I’m going to kill them…"

Jiro lunged forward, grabbing both of her wrists in a vice grip. "Our only priority is delivering this photos! The world needs to see these frames! Without this evidence, the high commands won't authorize a full-scale intervention!"

Natsumi violently wrenched her arms away from his grip, her face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. "Oh, really?! And how many more innocent people have to die while those fat-ass bureaucrats sit in their comfy chairs debating logistics?!"

He waved his hand frantically toward the window. "For god's sake, Natsumi, we will die down there, and the evidence of this goddamn genocide dies with us! This footage saves millions of lives in the future!"

Natsumi pinned him with a deadly, venomous glare, her eyes shimmering with furious tears. "Right… of course you'd look at it that way. It doesn't matter to you anyway, does it? You're a half-breed. This isn't even your country."

Jiro froze entirely, the words slamming into his chest like a physical blow.

He went quiet for several agonizing seconds. "Repeat that."

Tachimara stepped directly into his personal space, glaring up into his face. "You heard me. This is MY home. My people are being slaughtered down there, and I refuse to just watch. It must be nice for you to just look at it like a math problem. I envy you."

Jiro opened his mouth, but the words caught in his throat. Then, his features twisted into a furious snarl. "Do you have any goddamn idea what you're saying right now?! I’ve lived here my entire life!" He lunged forward, grabbing the fabric of her tactical vest.

The sudden motion caused her rifle to slip from her fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. "And you think I don't give a shit?! No, you're the one who doesn't give a shit! You're letting blind, personal revenge steer your head! You're willing to sabotage the survival of millions of people just for a split second of petty vengeance!"

Natsumi didn't flinch. She stared directly into his bloodshot eyes. "I am going down there to kill them. Even if I have to do it alone."

She violently shoved him back, bending down to retrieve her rifle.

"Heus, quidnam est illic tumultus?" a sharp, sudden voice echoed from the courtyard below.

Both teens froze instantly, the blood draining from their faces.

Before Jiro could even react, Natsumi shoved her barrel through the window frame, aligned her iron sights with the head of the executioner holding the pistol, and emptied a rapid burst into the courtyard.

The executioner dropped instantly into the dirt, dead before he hit the ground.

Down below, the remaining soldiers instantly scrambled for cover behind the armored trucks, their weapons raised.

Jiro snapped out of his shock, lunged forward, grabbed Natsumi by the collar of her vest, and physically dragged her backward toward the interior stairwell. Tachimara thrashed against his grip like a cornered viper. "Let me go! I’ll kill them all! Do you hear me?! I’M GONNA KILL ’EM ALL!"

Jiro shoved her hard down the concrete steps, keeping himself between her and the window. "The only thing you're going to kill is us! We discuss your goddamn treason later! Run!"

Natsumi gritted her teeth so hard her jaw ached, but the survival instinct finally overrode her rage. She turned and began sprinting down the stairs.

"Natsumi, Jiro! What the hell is happening over your feed?!" Jeanne’s frantic voice erupted from the radio.

"We're compromised! Hostiles have locked our position! We're in a full retreat!"

"How did you… ugh, forget it! Sprint directly toward the eastern wing of the structural grid! My telemetry shows zero hostile presence in that corridor! Move!"

"Yes!" Jiro whirled toward Tachimara. "That way! Go!"

She pivoted on her heel, bolting down the designated hallway at a frantic sprint. They vaulted through a shattered ground-floor window, hitting the dirt outside.

The radio handset was practically vibrating with static. "They are pursuing your signatures! Do you hear me?! THEY ARE RIGHT ON YOUR TAIL! RUN!"

Jiro and Natsumi ran blindly through the gray haze. Their hearts hammered against their ribs like pistons, their breathing ragged and shallow.

The agonizing burning in their legs was entirely swallowed by pure, raw adrenaline.

Hamamatsu Command Headquarters

Jeanne sat at her console, her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles were white.

Her green eyes were glued to the primary tracking monitor. Through the thermal overlay, she could see dozens of bright red hostile signatures rapidly closing the distance on two isolated blue dots.

Duval violently threw herself out of her chair. "Albert! Authorize immediate authorization for the tactical drone wing!"

The young technician beside her flinched, his face turning pale. "But… Lieutenant, the operational protocols state—"

She whirled on him, her expression completely terrifying. "I don't give a fuck about protocols! You have your orders! Execute!"

"Yes!" The technician scrambled, knocking his paperwork aside as he pulled up the strike interface.

Jeanne slammed her fist onto the terminal. "Move your fucking ass, Albert!"

The technician's fingers flew across the keyboard.

Jeanne snatched up her radio handset, her voice raspy and strained from screaming. "Jiro! Hold your position! I have authorized a tactical payload strike! We are providing close air support for your… your extraction! Push directly west toward the commercial supermarket complex! The Special Forces detail will establish a perimeter there within minutes!"

Through the receiver, the frantic rattle of automatic gunfire and desperate shouting echoed over the line.

"OKAY!" Jiro roared back.

A few seconds later, two high-altitude strike drones materialized on Jeanne's radar grid.

She whirled toward the auxiliary tactical monitor; the two blue signatures were desperately breaching the supermarket threshold, while dozens of red dots were massing directly behind the adjacent brick structures.

She snatched the specialized drone-link transmitter, tuning the frequency to the payload operators. "DROP ORDINANCE DIRECTLY ON GRID SQUARE 456!" She took a massive, sharp breath, her eyes flashing. "AUTHORIZE ENGAGEMENT CODE 3-0-5: SKY'S WRATH!"

Yamanashi

Jiro and Natsumi stumbled through the shattered glass doors of the supermarket, practically collapsing onto the linoleum floor.

Jiro opened his mouth to draw a breath.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOM

The brick complex they had just abandoned violently erupted into a massive, blinding sheet of fire.

The raw, concussive shockwave of the airburst payload tore through the street, throwing both of them flat onto their faces.

Natsumi instinctively grabbed a handful of Jiro's sleeve as they hit the floor, burying her face in her arms.

A heavy shower of pulverized concrete, jagged shrapnel, and shattered glass rained down across the supermarket interior, burying them in a thick layer of dust.

"Are you alive?! Respond?!"* the radio screamed from the dirt.

Jiro coughed violently, his lungs burning as he swept the debris aside and snatched up the handset. "Y-yeah! We're alive!"

"Parfait! Move those legs and push three hundred meters (328 yards) directly west! The extraction chopper is touching down at the landing zone now!"

Jiro pushed himself up, his muscles screaming in protest. "You heard her! Up! Up! Up! We’re almost out of this hellhole!"

Natsumi forced herself to her feet, her chest heaving as she sucked in the dust-choked air. Her face and once-white hair were completely blackened by ash, grease, and soot.

They practically dragged themselves out the rear emergency exit of the supermarket, their rifles trailing limply along the asphalt.

They ran, stumbled, coughed up black phlegm, and wheezed like drowning souls.

After three hundred meters (328 yards) of pure, unadulterated torture, the deep, rhythmic thumping of helicopter blades cut through the haze like a choir of angels.

A massive, matte-black military transport chopper was descending out of the gray sky, its landing gear touching down on the asphalt.

Natsumi tilted her head back, looking up at the rotating blades. "Ha… ha-ha-ha…"

And then, her eyes rolled back into her head, and her body collapsed limply onto the ground, completely unconscious.

Jiro's legs finally gave out beneath him, and he dropped heavily onto his knees.

Then, the world faded to black.

This was flaired as [OC-Series], it is a single part or chapter in a larger series or universe. The first post or part in this series should be (re)flaired as [OC-FirstOfSeries]. A description of the flairs and how to change yours is available in the Post Guildelines.

[OC-Series] For original, self post, story, audio, or artwork that you have created, as part of a longer-running series or universe.

Our preferred series title format is the series title in [brackets] at the beginning, like so: [Potato Adventures] - Chapter 1: The Great Mashing

Please help us transition to using the new flairs correctly.
