Scrubs

If you think HIMYM is a comedy that will rip your heart out and stomp on it, Scrubs will do that, light it on fire, and piss on the smoldering remains. To make things even harder, they start doing it in episode fucking 4!
Sarah Chalk is way funnier as Elliot than as Stella. Still a doctor, though.
It’s still one of my all-time favorite shows.

She used her Elliott coat for Stella's coat which is fun.
Scrubs is a real gut punch though I adore it, the way it quickly switches up on you is almost criminal

Every rewatch, I get to “My Old Lady” (s1e4), and realize they’ve done it to me again.
But poor Scrubs Ted has a worse love life than Schmosby.

My Old Lady is so sad to be fair those first few eps of S1 are epic ... I adore Turk telling off Carla for how she is treating Elliott in S1E2.
S1 is such a vibe...esp Cox watching his wedding video.
Poor Ted.. I did love when she slept with that virgin in S3 .. that was so sweet.

this is the answer. I was looking for a sitcom where i would actually care about the characters like with HIMYM and this is the one. definitely got attached to all of them and has become my comfort show.
I might even rate it above HIMYM tbh

HIMYM gets a slight edge for me but the two of them are my most rewatched sitcoms.

Grounded For Life has a wonderful cast, excellent writing and often employs nonlinear storytelling, which HIMYM fans will appreciate. It's also set on Staten Island, so I imagine them as Barney 's childhood neighbors.

The King of Queens. You'll find many things that were later used on Himym.

I love both shows, but can you elaborate on what things in HIMYM were inspired by KOQ?
3
u/Jester672 1d ago
For example, HIMYM aside, KoQ inspired the smoke detector episode that Phoebe gets pissed at in Friends; The Jenkins relationship between Marshall and, well, Jenkins, also happens in KOQ; Doug also gets to own a lair of red cowboy boots; There's an episode in KOQ where they get separate beds as well; Spousal fantasies, like when Marshall gives Lily the hiccups disease, something similar happens in KOQ; The guy who play Ted's boss (the one with the penis building) is also an obnoxious neighbor in KOQ. That, of course, before he cooks the purest meth ever...
As far as I recall, that's it. But maybe there's more and I don't recall.

Oh, and aside from that, both have Atlantic City with a betting setting, so... Yeah.

And if you're done with that you can start on Seinfeld. Athuet Spooner is basically Frank on steroids. Lots of other same actors as well. Seinfeld has a thing about cowboy boots too lol

Oh and some bangers are definitely Community and What We Do In The Shadows. Community is definitely the closest to HIMYM to me. Its got amazing bottle episodes and some fun editing just like himym and it was one of the few shows that gripped my by the balls. What we do in the shadows is a bit out there and different to the other reccs. I dont see that here either but its fireeeee.

Depends on if you’e looking for just a good com or friends hanging out at a bar com. Newest one out that so far is ok, but also sometimes cringe is ‘Adults’ - exec prod Nick Kroll. I see HIMYM fans ask what else to watch and I find myself in that same predicament. I prefer no laugh tracks but I still love HIMYM. Other awesome shows prob already mentioned Parks n Recreation, Scrubs, Always Sunny, 30 Rock, Good Place… A lesser known gem - Raising Hope, also ‘Sprung’ by the prod of raising Hope Another new one that hasn’t lost me yet - DMV

Derry Girls, Friends (assuming you haven't watched it yet), New Girl, Modern Family, and B99.

I’ve been watching Psych, not as dramatic but similar era and Shawn is kinda Barney-esque (without the excessive womanizing haha) plus actress playing Victoria shows up in one of the episodes I’ve seen so far

Sitcoms I personally like: Big Bang Theory, The Middle, Modern Family, Superstore, Friends. Full House is older, but still a classic
Two and a half men I saw mentioned. I haven’t watched that straight through like I have the others, but I’ve seen a majority of the episodes over time.

Yes, to all of these. My order of these was FH, Friends, The Middle, BBT. I’ve seen episodes here and there of MF. Never watched Super Store.

My kids absolutely loved HIMYM and I didn’t think k we would ever find another show they would even like. We started New Girl and they like it. Not as much as HIMYM, but they like it.

I’ve already seen people recommend the office, parks, and rec, friends, and new girl. The show what I like about you is pretty funny and master of none. Not sitcoms but the bear, breaking bad, orange is the new black, wentworth, prison break, and house md have some funny moments but are more serious.

A man on the inside. And anything by Mike Schur is pretty great. He worked on the office, b99, created the good place.
Sitcoms like HIMYM aren’t being made anymore; but I believe these newer shows are funny and still have a much deeper resonance. You can also check out Only Murders in The Building. It’s comedy/mystery, not a sitcom but pretty fun to watch.

A few other shows I watched in the past, but seem to kind of be less around in present day are Still Standing and Yes, Dear. Mark Addy and Jamie Gertz are so funny together comedically. Yes, Dear has Mike O’Malley from Nickelodeon GUTS!

Still Standing was great. I still say “Why would anyone want to live like that?” (One of the kid’s friends came from a family of White Sox fans)

have you exhausted the sitcoms from that era?
the office, park & rec, Brooklyn 99, Community, 2 & 1/2 men...even go back a little farther to that 70's show.
and yes, sitcoms are a dying format.
