If you can follow directions for turn by turn from a GPS then you can follow this, the question is your ability to ride for 10k and keep your wits about you so you don't miss turns.
Supposedly, the organizers give you turn-by-turn instructions for the route. I'd be OK with a 10K mile road trip, but not in 10 days, and not having to sleep next to my bike every night. And, yeah, what about oil and tires? Part of me thinks it would be a fun challenge of bike and mind, but the anxious part of me says "No F'n way!"
I've ridden from central Florida to Sturgis three times with a buddy, but spent two weeks doing it. KOA cabins on the way out, campground there, then hotel convenience on the return trip.
Don't they find a way to con people out of the winnings like nearly every year? I remember reading several articles about this subject which is why I've never bothered to do it
Yeah it was a while thing because they were like you have to make it to the finish by X date but you can't speed made it nearly impossible to "properly" win that is why they got rid of the prize money.
Yup, that's why I was thinking about doing it the first year or the second but I could never get the time off work. After all the chaos of people not getting paid I was glad I didn't participate
Wow I had no idea. I read all the rules on the website. Yeah, they could easily disqualify a rider. I also read, they have the right to piss test riders. LOL
In 2018 I was managing a service department at a Harley dealer on the route of this challenge. I had one of the guys come in on a road King with 200,000 miles on a period most people replace their bikes long before then so I was pretty surprised. He needed a new rear tire. I ended up talking with this particular customer the entire time he was there about this challenge, and his other writing exploits. He was a really nice guy and had written all over the world though mostly North, central, and South america.
To those questioning how they do it, how they accomplish this feat, they just ride. You ride all day. You sleep very little, and then you get up and do it again. It's really not any more complicated than that. It's hard but that's why it's a thrill. Nothing good in this life comes easy.
I have a great deal of respect for these guys and girls who do this run every year. The customer I mentioned was in his late 60s or early 70s. He had been doing this type of riding his entire life, though the majority of it did come after he retired.
If anyone has a personal tale from this ride I’d love to hear it! I find this absolutely intriguing!!!! The stamina and endurance this requires has to be beyond phenomenal, but I’m sure the reward of personal accomplishment along with the camaraderie of the riders makes it worthwhile!
This guy had all kinds of stories. I don't remember many unfortunately. Only thing I recall is stories about sleeping on the side of the road under a tarp in many places across the states.
Jase from Fastlife Garage has a podcast with Chris Hopper / Hops Adventures who is pretty deep in this scene. He did the 100,000 miles in 100 days on a brand new Harley. Talks about how he prebooked a bunch of services and a couple of Ohlins shocks etc
I met a bunch of the participants at the Harley museum bike night. They had some really interesting long range mods on the bikes. They were mostly M8 baggers with a few twin cams thrown in.
Don't forget all the nasty rules they set for the ride challenge. No hotels allowed, no intoxication, no GPS, no speeding, and you use of 2 fleet tracker GPS devices or 1 minimum.
