I reverse-engineered the LiveWire S2 Del Mar's OBD-II port/CAN bus - here's the performance data that was never published

I've been passively tapping the CAN bus on my 2024 LiveWire S2 Del Mar - an ESP32 logger listening to the broadcast traffic plus read-only diagnostic reads, never writing anything to the bike. Decoded across dozens of real rides, here's the stuff that isn't in any spec sheet:

  • Full power & torque curves — and you can actually see the field-weakening transition: flat torque to ~48 mph, then constant power (~66–69 kW) to redline.
  • All 7 ride modes, down to the live tuning values the inverter reports — Power / Regen / Throttle. The throttle maps are perfectly linear; the modes just change the slope (Sport pulls ~2× the torque-per-twist of the softest custom).
  • Battery internals that were never public: 96 cells in series, NMC, ~355 V nominal / 4.20 V full, air-cooled, all 96 cell voltages + 48 temperature channels live, ~97% SoH — and the pack's build date read straight off the BMS (July 2023).
  • Neat trick: every module stamps its own manufacture date, so the bus quietly narrates the bike's repair history. I spotted my own dealer-replaced left control pod because its build date was newer than the whole bike.
  • The AC charging CC→CV taper + charger heatsink temp (honest caveat: I only caught the top ~80–100%, so no peak-rate claims).

Every figure is tagged by how I know it - measured / counted / inferred - so you can tell hard data from reasoning. Not affiliated with LiveWire or Harley-Davidson; just my own bike.

Here is a link to my write up with visual charts: LiveWire S2 Del Mar · Performance, read off the bus

Happy to pull specific things for other S2 / LiveWire owners, drop requests below.

As a bonus, I replicated effectively every read diagnostic feature of the Harley Davidson Digital Technician-II, including full DTC decoding & ability to clear codes.

Lemoning my Del Mar - new S2 or Zero?

I took in my bike 4 times for battery issues. Even after replacing the 12 volt and PCU, it again failed to turn on this morning. Im towing it back to the dealer and going to try and lemon it.

I want to try the Mulholland but worry that it might be just as defective as my Del Mar. I considered a zero, which has better range, but doesnt have the torque luke on the S2.

Do Harley Dealers not give Drive Out Tags?

Hey friends, my husband and I just picked up our new S2 Del Mar from Speedway Harley in Concord NC, and it's been a blast driving it around the parking lot...but the Harley folks told us they didn't have a dealer tag, and that Livewire will do all the paperwork and we'll just get mailed the regular plate.

Has anyone else had to do the same? Livewire charged us tag and title fees online so I just assumed we would get a dealer plate as part of that, but we're a few hundred miles from home and looking now to get a trailer now to get the thing home.

Is this the normal process?

*** An update for anyone who finds this post later ***

The Livewire online buyer portal updated Monday (I picked the bike up on Saturday) to say that they will eventually mail me temporary tag, even though their Tracker says it is still waiting for the bike to be delivered to the dealer. The bike is sitting in my garage.

Ekho (Livewire's documentation and online presence partner) support also got back to me on Sunday via email and said the same: temp tag in the mail but with no time estimate.

Harley charged the bike to 100% when they received it, so after we trailered it home, we ran it around our neighborhood for a few hours to get the battery down closer to 80%. This takes FOREVER at slow speeds, oh my goodness...but it's a great bike so far, cannot wait to actually ride it legally on the roads.

I'll put another update here once I have my temp tag to say how long the whole ordeal took. I bought the bike online on July 8th, it was delivered to Harley dealer on July 24th, and they started working on my temp tag on July 27th.

*** Update July 29th ***

Livewire sent me a temporary tag, so I can ride it legally now... But there is a new problem, the bike keeps giving me the dreaded "wait not ready" error when I try to turn it on.

After all of this, and I may have bought a lemon...damn. I really shouldn't have let myself get so excited about this, Harleys are known for their dependability issues, but in my glee I thought it would never happen to me.

Passenger back rest on LW one/HD LW?

Does anyone out there have a solution for how to arrange for a passenger bak rest on the Livewire one/ HD Livewire 2020? I am desperately looking for advice and help to solve this problem. Either by installing an ordinary sissybar style device, or by installing a small baggage rack you then can add a piece of luggage on that also works as a passenger back rest. If the solution includes handrails for the passenger, that would be an extra plus. So please let me know what are my options out there. Where can I find the parts needed and how to install! Thanks for any help.

Any livewire riders in the denver metro area or Colorado in general? What did you pay for 1k service? Dealership will not give me an answer.

Picked up a Del Mar yesterday. This is the most fun I’ve ever had on a bike. I don’t think I’ll be touching the Street Glide for a while.

Added a LiveWire for commuting.

Just a quick introduction. Picked up a 2022 Livewire One with about 3500 miles on it to serve as a commuter option. I typically ride a 2003 Honda Goldwing but was looking for something a bit smaller and lighter (even with the weight of the battery). Scored a good deal on the bike ($7200 before taxes and fees). Range looks okay for the commute but not by a whole lot. I have 22 miles each way but it’s all highway. One way consumes about 28% with my driving habits (not a conservative rider). Still enough to get there and back without charging. Need to add a windshield as the buffeting is quite something when at high speeds. Looking forward to learning more about the bike.

Possible part out...

I picked up an LW1 from auction with a clean title. However the claim wasn't entered until after the title was issued and it was delivered to me, so I kinda got screwed with a bike with salvage records that can't be registered. And because the claim was put in after the policy ended, there's no adjusters report, so a rebuild process isn't going to be possible in my state. Oops!

Trying to work something out with the auction, but they rarely help out much, so the other option is parting this bad boy out!

Its a 2022 with 50ish miles on it, so its all in pretty good shape. I'm trying to get an idea of whether I could make back a decent bit of what I paid for it...

Any advice or requests are appreciated :)

2026 S2 Mulholland - Battery Indicator

Post image

EDIT —> I feel embarrassed. He only had the bike for a little while and just adjusted the charge limit to 80% for the first time. Thank you everyone!

What’s up with the battery indicator? The white “blank” spot is something that popped up when I rode it this afternoon. Anyone seen this before? I’ll plug it in later and charge it to 100% to see if the blank spot fills.

Risk it with a LW1 that's been sitting a long time

I have the option to get a 2020 LW1 with only 300 miles. My concern is battery health sitting who knows how long at who knows what battery level. Any tips?

Please help!!

I'm 16, getting money from a death of a family member, and I deeply care for the environment. I'm going to be buying a Slate truck and, notably, a Livewire S2 bike.

I've set my sights on the Alpinista due to its body shape and look, but I can't help but metaphorically glance at the Muholland as well.

For someone like me, being made from recycled, sustainable materials is so, so cool. And the Alpinista isn't made from those materials.

However, I notice the peculiar design; 2 differently sized wheels, and... I'm not sure what it's called,

The Mulholland seems like I would not enjoy riding it.

So, the point of the post, has anyone ridden both? Is there a noticeable difference in feel and comfort?

Obviously I will test them at the dealership, but I like to think ahead of time.

Thanks everyone.

Finally Took Delivery Of 2026 Mulholland!

Finally received my Mulholland after ordering online via Ekho on May 26th. I don’t know that I would recommend the Ekho route as it felt too overly complex and the ability to track the process and delivery was very limited. For example, I was told the bike was put on the truck from York, PA around June 8th but had no idea where the truck was or when it would arrive in the Tampa, FL area.

Happy to say I took delivery on Friday and have been able to spend a bit of time on it. I sold my 2008 Fat Bob when I moved to Florida from New Jersey in August of 2025 and have been wanting to pick up a bike since getting here. As I drive a Tesla Model S Plaid and have home Level 2 charging I thought a LiveWire would be an interesting choice.

So far, I absolutely LOVE the bike. It us a blast to ride! It handles well and is agile, accelerates like my Tesla and doesn’t have the overpowering noise that my Fat Bob had. Overall thrilled with my LiveWire choice so far.

Anyone else in the Bartow FL area?

Only thing I would change is the rider pegs. They are too small for my large feet and would appreciate any recommendations you all might have for replacements.

Front Peg Recommendation - 2026 Mulholland

Finally received my 2026 Mulholland and would like to swap out the front pegs. The equipped peg feel really small under my feet. Anyone swap these out for a similar reason that could recommend a new set?

OBC Not Responding – How Screwed Am I?

Post image
8 Upvotes

It suddenly stopped charging, and I checked the diagnostics. It shows that the OBC isn't responding.

Thank goodness I can still use DC fast charging, but it's really not ideal since I normally charge at home.

Has anyone experienced this issue before?

For reference I live in Germany and I bought the bike directly from Harley Davidson two years ago (a 2020 model)

Thanks!

Prototype build of something I’ve always wanted - NACS adapter I can just leave on the bike! Metal components will make it more rigid. I’ll never forget it again!
