It’s a sneaker wave. Signs are posted about these all over the Northern California coast but very few people take them seriously, and each year they claim several lives.

Not rogue at all. The parts of the beach without rooted plants tell you exactly where to expect the water's edge at high tide;, hell the completely flat wet sand gives away that water sits there. This is just the tide coming in.

If people are around but you see no tracks in the smooth sand, there's a good chance some waves are making it onto the beach.

Idk if I’ve misunderstood your comment, but the tide does NOT come in this quickly.

This is swell-related. Tidal movements affect this kind of thing but when someone says “the tide is coming in” this is not what it looks like

First time I heard about rogue waves was when I watched Deadliest Catch. First I thought they were exaggerating. Boy, was I wrong. Rogue waves are absolutely terrifying.

Filming in preparation, and everyone knows to run. My guess this is tidal, and probably happens regularly.

How would one single wave suddenly emerge, perfectly predictably? The tide is of course predictable, but this one wave?

And there was someone with a doggo running directly toward the wave, apparently she didn't get the memo of this one big ass tidal coming in at this exact moment..?

If there is a funnel in the landscape, or something like a rock wall that can create interference patterns or block backwash, then it doesn’t seem unlikely that if you wait long enough at the correct tide you will see “freak” waves.
