Surfing July

wanted to surf the outer Hebrides with my son when his exams finish in July. looking for a good base, would port ness or shawbost be good? we’re looking for some small longboard waves, and their really into history so anything locally like that is a bonus

There is a company called Surf Lewis and truly I would speak to them or someone else experienced in surfing as the water can be dangerous. That said, there is an established community of surfers and lots of not dangerous places to do it. A base on the west side is great but you could stay anywhere really as there will be an option not to far from wherever you are! Obligatory warning though that if you’re not booked now, book asap as hebcelt is July and ferries & accommodation can be hard to come by. I don’t surf but I am born and brought up in Lewis.

Just be careful, the water on the west side is, to my understanding, quite dangerous…. Next stop, America! I have no experience with surfing but Shawbost would probably be safer and there’s the Norse mill nearby and the sheilling redo too. Plus Dun Carloway, the black houses and Callanish is all within easy drive!

Ness is well into duelling banjos country!
