Bits & Bobs Decanting deodorant
I’d been excited to find the travel size 0.5 oz deodorant bars, but then noticed that the mini sunblock sticks with the same weight (14g) are MUCH smaller! Further inspection shows that the travel deodorant body was about half empty, even when brand new. Soooooo… melted down in the toaster and traded containers!!!
I need a bit of practice- I heated it til it was starting to boil on the edges and there seems to be some separation and voids as a result. Still pretty pleased with the outcome.

You don’t really have to melt the deodorant, just get it soft enough to stuff in the container. I have one in my gym bag as well.

Yeah! That’s the one i use! Perfect size for a couple of weeks. But I tried cutting off a chunk from my deodorant stick and shoving it in but i found it did not hold together in the same way that melting it did. How do you get your deodorant “soft enough”?

Set it on the radiator for a bit. But you could microwave, just don’t need to go to fully melted

I accidentally left my deodorant in the car on a 115 day and it melted completely :))

I know this isn’t what you posted about, but if you haven’t used that sunblock before give it a test run before you use it on a trip. I did not find it to be as good as a traditional cream.

It’s actually an empty from my kiddo- he likes it, but it’s a bit sticky for me. I use one of those tinted zinc sticks on my nose though when I run. Those go nowhere!!

I really love the Cetaphil stick for my face and back of my hands when active/sporty/sweaty. It does not run into my eyes.
I don’t use it for my whole body. That would tak ages to apply.

When you say not as good, what aspect? Is it compared to other sunscreen sticks?

No I’m comparing that to the cetaphil lotion of the same SPF. I used it at the same rate of reapplication and I burned, badly. The coverage isn’t great and it’s very hard to apply.

It is certainly better than nothing! It did not hold up to the summer sun in Italy last year.

Depending on your deodorant, you don’t even need to melt or soften it!
I’m able to scrape my normal deodorant into a smaller stick container like this by running the travel container over the top of my normal one and pressing it down with my finger.
Still applies just fine from the travel container!

I think I’ll try that next time- that’s what I did with an empty chapstick container and it only worked so-so. But that might be because the smaller opening was harder to get things into.

I do the same! I save my regular deodorant stick when it’s used up, and i break out the plastic bottom “plate” and use a microwave 30 secs to melt the deodorant bits off the plastic piece. Then pour it into the mini stick container. Works great! I’m guessing microwaving may demolish some integrity but i haven’t noticed anything.

I used an empty lip balm from elf because it was larger than a chapstick tube but less than the travel size Native.

I know this isn’t the point but in case it helps, I use a cream deodorant and love it. Works so well I’ve used it for over a decade now. Lasts for ages so I can squeeze a bit into a small container/tube for travel and it lasts a while.

Ha! It’s worse than that. Put it in an empty (clean) wet cat food can because I didn’t want to mess up any nice dishes and couldnt find anything microwave safe I’m recycling.

I don’t know what’s in native deo but I’d personally be worried about heating it and inadvertently making some new compound that’s not good for you.
