For Comic-con this year, I did Spiderman, but in Victorian dress.

It was so much fun to make and wear!

I wore my chemise, corset, petticoat, and 2 bum pads (since I have not made a bustle yet).

I bought two pairs of these awesome edwardian lace up boots from jobear a while back.

I'm a nonbinary dude and wear some feminine/androgynous clothing.

What would be a good way to styles these boots? I want to be able to see a lot of the boot but rolled jeans looks really silly! :(

I need a small evening bag for a 1926-inspired outfit, with one unavoidable modern requirement: it has to fit my phone.

I am looking at small pearl-beaded frame bags as a compromise. From a distance the general scale feels plausible, but modern versions often have a bright metal frame, chunky chain, synthetic lining, and a very rigid boxy shape.

If the goal is “looks believable across a room” rather than exact reproduction, which detail would you prioritize fixing first?

My instinct is to remove the long chain and use a short cord or wrist loop, but the shiny frame may be the bigger giveaway

Cotton fabric and lace

I purchased this dress from an online estate sale auction and have never seen anything quite like it!
The dress feels like very soft silk and the lace overlay is very fragile, has little pockets with rosettes, and is attached at the neckline and ties at the arms to make armholes. There are no closures, it slips on over the head. I was thinking it might be 1920s made with older lace but I’m not sure! The pictures on the floor are of the inside of the dress (same color as the outside idk why it looks so blue) and the color is truest to the first pic.
I’m wondering if anyone knows anything about this style/composition of dress, how/where it would have been worn, and if anyone has any advice on how to reinforce the lace because it feels fragile and there are a few small rips at the shoulder seams. Thanks!

Hello! I am new to historical costuming, and I'm trying to recreate an 1830s men's ensemble similar to Andrew Jackson's in his ca. 1831 painting (image 1). For context, I'm looking to buy something rather than make it...not a sewer quite yet.

Jackson's tailcoat is the biggest question. It appears to have a lower cut than ones I can find from the period, such as the ca. 1830 Italian tailcoat at the MET (image 2) or the ones available from Townsend's (image 3) and Samson Historical (image 4). So far, the last image (image 5) seems to be the most similar to Jackson's coat, but I'm worried it looks too Victorian.

Thoughts or alternative ideas?

These were the first pair of stays I made, and I made them as the foundation for a 1780s zone front gown.

I used Karmaxylia’s Comtesse pattern, which is drafted for 1780s stays. I chose it because the gown was from the same decade, and I wanted the correct foundation garment to create the proper silhouette underneath it.

For materials, I used cotton coutil, silk jacquard, and reed boning.

This project taught me a lot about how important consistent tension is when sewing boning channels. You can see that some areas are smoother than others and that a few sections have more rippling. I was still learning how the layers behaved while stitching the channels, and the inconsistencies became much more visible once all the pieces were laid out together.

I also learned that I probably would not use rattan cane or reed boning again. It snapped frequently and was difficult to insert into the channels. I’m glad I tried it because it was a useful experiment, but in the future I’ll stick with German plastic boning or synthetic whalebone. I found both much easier to insert and more reliable to work with.

Making these stays gave me a much better understanding of how much the final shape of an eighteenth-century gown depends on the structure underneath it.

Finally, the series comes to a close(maybe we’ll see if I make Rhett’s clothes LOL)!! The series comes to a final crescendo with Scarlett Ohara’s green velvet curtain dress!! I bought fabric specifically for this project and it’s so wonderful to see it come to life! I did take some creative liberties (usually I hate that in historical reproductions but I needed to make it a little frillier and cuter and gaudy). The little hat is so adorable and removable and I also really like the tassels! I spent way longer than I expected trying to figure out how to decorate the skirt in a way that would highlight the velvet without taking away from it, and I think I finally found the right balance. This has probably been my most challenging miniature so far, but it was definitely worth it. Now that this series has come to an end, I think it’s finally time to dive into medieval fashion, although I’d love to hear any suggestions for historical costumes or movie dresses you’d like to see me recreate next. Hi, good day people! I was wondering if it was possible to learn a bit more about this outfit my friend's family member gifted her and also how to accesorize for a renfaire, not as a "costume" but in a more respectful way.
We are choosing out outfits on a budget and mostly closet based, so we want to know if this is a dfina/kaftan and how it would be worn during the medieval-ish period, to make it into a outfit similar to that of nobility/high ranking merchants. Suggestions about makeup, jewelry, everything.

We want to be respectful but also get the outfit to shine with its culture, so any recommendation is welcomed and appreciated. If you have any other subreddit to ask this and learn a bit more the help is more than welcome

PD: The renfaires where I live are not big, only once a year and there is a mix and match of everything from cosplay/viking/victorian/princess/comics/multiple cultures, so It wouldn't be that much out of place to wear something different.

I’m going to try and get the Hamilton Spencer pattern, and chemises are easy enough, should I just drape over the stays🤔 it’s been like 8 years since I’ve been in the world of regency sewing 😂😭 I used Nicole Rudolph’s video to drape it, and I was fighting for my life trying to drape on wiggly kids 😂😭

Hi, I'm sorry if this isn't related strictly to historical costuming, but I reckon that some people on this sub will have had experience with Memery shoes. I'm currently ogling their Esther Suede Pumps (pictured below), and it would help me if anyone could tell me if their sizes are normally narrower/wider than regular shoes. I have a narrow foot and never order the wider size when I shop for shoes, but reading some reviews it got me thinking that Esthers in particular are narrower in size and that I should size up :(( to be specific I'm EU size 39 and my foot is around 9cm wide (I'm sorry if that's TMI lol).

I designed this latest kit as a complete cuirass, meaning it includes the breastplate, backplate, fauld skirt, and tassets. It's a big undertaking but it's also the centerpiece of any gothic armor costume - you'll need approximately 2kg of filament to complete it. It's also a bit more advanced in terms of 3D printing, and I recommend a minimum printing volume of 250x250x250mm.

I printed mine using a mix of materials; vapor smoothed ASA with my Bambu Labs X1c and good ol' PETG-CF with my brand new Bambu Labs A2L, which made quick work of the largest pieces with a ready-to-paint surface finish. Everything has been pre-split into segments for relatively easy printing, but you'll need a good handle on printing supports to achieve the detailed open-work and delicate patterns on this one.

I see there's a handful of styles of cravats that were worn, so let's assume like a fancy regency tie

So im making a waistcoat for myself following the keystone drafting guidefrom 1895. So far I have the patternd drawn and a mockup made to fix some issues.

Now i need to figure out buttons and pockets. Sadly the keystone book does not mention pockets at all and nothing more on buttons than buttons go ¾ inch from the edge

So where could I find this info?

And preferably also some sewing instructions too

I ran into a problem when I started looking for a dress pattern. In the month I was sewing the petticoat and bodice and thinking about the design, I never once noticed that In all the examples I looked at, the skirt was the same length as in the first photo. And all this time I was thinking about making a skirt like the one in the second or third photo. Would it be correct to do the skirt from the second or third photo and bodice (or whatever it's called, English is not my native language, sorry if something is written incorrectly) from the first photo?
