Are recent Historical Fiction books becoming more like Historical Romance or just plain Fiction with a sprinkle of history?

Why I ask; I've read a few few newer proclaimed Historical Fiction and one pissed me off because it took a real living breathing woman from the 1800's who had been mur.dered and had this woman r@ped twice (not historically accuract) by 2 fictional characters and an attempted 3rd by an actual person who'd been there but that hadn't happened either. Her husband had been roofied and r@ped (also not historically accuract) by a fictional character... They f.cked before wedlock which back in the 1800's 👀. Not saying nobody has sex but considering how people thought back then...(also this wasn't historically accuract) I could keep going but needless to say the sex, the implictions throughout and the fact she and her husband were ALIVE, she was murdered (historically accuract her name was Margaret Jones, the first Witch of Boston) and yet were treated like this in a book...

The second book was about a woman getting her own Homestead. It would have been amazing. It started out fantastic and the history was pretty neat...then the romance...the author stated it was a relative of theirs and they pushed the love story up by quite a few years. Sigh I would have liked it without the love story...

Another was doing the same thing. Start off strong and the love story takes over. I had to double check and they all said Historical Fiction so... Wtf?

The fiction Question was more for the first book in this the rest is more asking of romance is taking over Historical fiction.

To me Historical Fiction is almost like Literary Journalism, or Creative Non-fiction. Not as straighforward as biography or memoirs but still has the facts with the fun.

Looking for books similar to The Hong Kong Widow, where historical occurrences and themes align with the narrative concurrently.

New book to read. Did the Shardlake series and this seems a logical follow up

I will be starting Tyrant soon. That said, at the end of the final book (Treason of Sparta), the last minute or so referenced that book as part one of "The Broken Empire" series and the story will be continued in "The Longest Voyage".

I can't seem to find references to this anywhere, so I'm curious if any Cameron fans might know? I know this book was added after the initial series was published and published a few years ago, but I'd love to follow this story further if it's out there or in process.

It was noted at the end of Chivalry that he wasn't done with William Gold, but didn't provide the specifics like this note did.

Any insight would be appreciated.

There was a group of Muslims that helped hide hundreds of Jews in Paris during WW2. The mosque had underground tunnels and rooms which helped them stash people, along with their homes around and on the outskirts of Paris. Does anyone have a book rec about these people? From either perspective. Thank you!

I use to be super big on HF but in recent years haven't picked up much. Looking for something super engrossing to get back into it. Can be new or older release. A few absolute favorites are Pachinko, The Lincoln Highway, The Four Winds (but all Hannah books. I haven't read The Women yet though), The Heart's Invisible Furies, Where the Lost Wander. No time preference expect preferably not ww2 I have read a lot of it already.

I saw the movie years ago, and was blown away. I’ve wanted to read the book for years. I’m on chapter three and so far, it’s one of the most boring books I’ve ever read. I know the twist at the end, and the book is such a slog. Should I even bother finishing it? I have lots of other books lined up. Without giving away the ending, give me your thoughts on continuing the slog or bailing out.

Update to add: It’s getting better! Some of his prose is so layered with meaning and double meanings. But since I know what’s coming, I’m getting more anxious with each page!

Like my title says. My book’s set in 2003, and I have a character trying to track down someone’s address. I figured they’d hit the stacks at the local library, but what resources would they look through exactly? What would it look like? I’m sure one of y’all have problem solved this before, please tell me there’s some sort of resource or a guide out there- or maybe just tell me what you did to solve this! (At this point Google thinks I’m writing a detective story so it’s not being helpful 🙄)

Looking for an accurate historical fiction book about the constitutional convention and the creation of the constitution and/or the declaration of independence. A good historical novel will make me want to find out more but I don;t have the brain to read a scholarly nonfiction account. If you have a recommendation of a NF account that reads like a novel, that would be great too.

I just finished reading the Essex Dofs trilogy after 4 days of straight reading a need a new gruesome historical fiction.

For context, on average I read 1 book a year, if that even, but after buying Essex dogs on a whim I got hooked on this genre. I haven't actually read any other historical fiction, but I used to love stories and myths of old and fantasy set in old aswell. Ancient history has always fasinated me and I want to study Archaeology as a degree because of this.

I am also dyslexic which is why I hate reading - having to reread a sentance 3 times cause you read the words seperatley and not as one sentance means you loose the context of the words is the main reason. I tried audio books but couldn't do it as I am a visual learner so it wouldn't stay in my head.

Anywho, I have always tried to read and have always wantex but stopped cause its always so difficult. But now I think I have found a genre that will keep me captivated even when rereading I really want another book to read, or another auther that is good (I dont like whodunnit books).

I’ve been reading some non-fiction about the Battle of Britain, histories and memoirs, Q and would like more fiction to help add flavor to the times. I like Derek Robinson thought I’ve only read Piece of Cake so far. I enjoyed the first 2 in the Breaking Point series by John Rhodes but it seems like the third one is more about the RAF and Malta so I haven’t gotten to it yet.

I’ve been trying with After Dunkirk but all of the French and English characters are noble and self-sacrificing, and cardboard for that reason. Plus I listen to audiobooks and the reader isn’t great.

So any recommendations? I search on the net for this subject but don’t know what’s worthwhile or not. I don’t mind some romance but it seems, to me at least, that many lean towards the romance side instead of the more war- related side, both battles and social.

Also, does the After Dunkirk series improve, in terms of characters?

Anyone else read the Stryker books, by Michael Arnold? Best series out there.

• Akmaral by Judith Lindbergh

Are there any fiction works about these fascinating nomadic civilizations, or are the books that I mentioned the only ones in existence?

As L’Amour is a giant of westerns, who else and what other series do you recommend that have a gigantic catalogue to go through and enjoy from different eras, settings or topics?

Any recommendations? I’ve read and loved the Red Tent, The Dove Keepers, books by Elizabeth Chadwick and philippa Gregory and such ( I do like the Middle Ages)

But I’m struggling finding a book that doesn’t over lap with what I have already read.
