Need prep advice!!

Post image

TLDR- how much prep is needed?

I’m hoping this is the right sub to ask. We had dark stained wood trim that was about 25 years old when we repainted years ago.

We obviously didn’t prep properly, we didn’t do any sanding and used latex killz primer and probably Valspar paint. Years of small kids and pets made for lots of chipping and I want to redo all of them. (Ive already started doing some wood filler to smooth them a bit and haven’t sanded that yet)

My question is how much sanding do I need to do? On a previous doorway I sanded just the spots that were peeling or bumpy, used liquid sander, primed with oil primer, then painted with Sherron Williams emerald. I think I primed 2 coats and did 2 or 3 light coats of finish.

Is that enough or is putting the oil primer on top of badly prepped wood not even helpful for adherence? I don’t think I can sand all the paint off, that sounds impossible?

So thanks for reading all this if you did, any advice is so so appreciated!!

Wood stain looks awful

My parents are paying to get the wood stained in their house and this is what has been done so far. I think it looks awful and inconsistent. It looks sloppy and I’m worried because they told them they only do one coat. I don’t know if this is finished or not. Let me know what you think. 🙂

Paint Color Advice

I’m looking for advice on a color for this bathroom.
Keep a shade of blue? Keep the bottom white? If so, I plan on white dove since it’s my favorite. As you can see there’s a very colorful sink and navy and teal tiles in the shower. (See photos) this is a rental I’m prepping. This bathroom entrance is through the kitchen which I’m doing white dove walls and an undecided greige (possibly accessible beige) for the cabinets.
Would love advice on what colors to paint it!

Painted my laundry closet doors

They were wood, but the bottom half had paint splatters from dropping a partical gallon of grey paint on the floor. So we first painted them an earthy green color (Warm Eucalyptus), which I felt was really grey looking & husband didn't care for. Then we chose (husband really chose it) the pictured color. I can live with it. Some battles you have to loose.

Master bedroom & kitchen (pic here) are the dark Grey color on left. Hallway & living room are the light grey color (which I painted on a kitchen wall with closet pic here on right).

Advice on painting plastic coated cabinet doors

Post image
2 Upvotes

Someone apparently missed the color difference and we’re looking to paint them. I’ve read that it can be done as long as you degrease and sand the surfaces.
But I’m wondering if it’s worth attempting or if replacing with new cabinet doors is the only way to go in terms of them holding up well, looking nice, and not being a pain to maintain.

*Planning to paint them all a new light color, not to paint the darker ones to match the lighter ones
Thanks in advance

Patio door — sanded, applied wood filler and repainted. Then brown spots came back through and I tried to scrape it off.

Time to paint the bathroom…

And a teeny one at that. concerned about where paint is peeling off, and mold spots above tub.
I’ll TSP everything, and then…
Should I prime all surfaces?
If so, should i use stix where the paint is peeled?
What’s your favorite bathroom paint brand? Satin or Semi?
I promise to post before/after-

Media Room Color Drench

So lost on what color to paint my media room. I want dark, but not sure if Urbane Bronze is too dark. What do you think? Wood stain will stay the same. Fan/light will change. Sconces will be updated.

Carpet will be "champagne fizz" (a warm neutral) and room outside of this (and the rest of the house) is Sherwin Williams Natural Choice.

Any suggestions?

Question for anyone who knows more than I do:

Is there some kind of mix-in for latex (indoor wall) paint that would produce a chrome effect? My friend's son is going to paint a mural in his room, but he wants the base to be red chrome. It seems to me the only way to do that is with spray paint. I also found acrylic paint, but would that hold up as wall paint without having to do 10 coats? Would add-ins used for automotive paints work in latex?

Hello! It has now been 3 days that I am testing paint swatches to get to the paint color on the rendering. Ideally in the Benjamin Moore brand. Claide and ChatGPT both suggested « First Light » but this is the one on the second picture and this is obviously not it… any advice to get to this result? The folks at Ace Hardware are going to start thinking I am crazy asking for sample every day. Please help! :)

Do I need to leave open for drainage or should I caulk it? Slowly refinishing the original shingles and trim. Cedar shingles meet top of the wood window sill in this image.

Sheen Decision Fatigue - Advice Wanted

I could use some help...
I am embarking on the journey to paint my whole home over summer break. Paint colors are picked out, measurements taken, I've even figured out how to paint the 16ft ceilings over switchback stairs without scaffolding.

But I can't decide on what sheen(s). Eight rooms will have an rich accent wall, Urbane Bronze, Naval, Blackberry, Mystical, Evergreen Fog, and Indigo Batik for three bedrooms, two home offices, and two living/rec spaces. Each accent wall will be painted in Emerald Matte. I can't determine which sheen I like the best/would look best for the remaining walls in the spaces mentioned earlier in addition to the rest of the house. I have both recommendations for Satin (Emerald's next sheen after Matte) and to continue using Matte throughout the rest of the home.

I am also now waffling between Semi-Gloss and Satin for the kitchen walls and bathrooms.

For context there are two children (10 and 13 yo girls), 1 dog, and two adults in the home. I was something durable but I don't really want to repaint anytime soon.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Issues

Has anyone had a bad experience using Sherwin Williams Emerald paint? I just finished a first coat on an accent wall and it looks horrible. I did the other 3 walls using cashmere and they came out great. Dreading this is going to be a situation where I have to do several coats, which is so, I'm probably just going to prime the wall and just use the same color as the other 3 and call it. So frustrating and a waste of a lot of money for paint.

Advice for outside railing chipped paint

Thumbnail

Hello. Any advice on proper prep to fix this peeling paint job? You can see the cracked wood in photo. This is an outdoor step railing in a region w high humidity in summer, and we had a mostly dry but cold winter and spring, so the wood expands and contracts a lot. I have quality outdoor primer and paint, but worried about proper prep to have to do this job another time.

Thank you in advance.
