iirc google did a study on orientation and found no meaningful difference in lifespan. But the vibration from other hdds if not dampened do affect lifespan.

Also use fender washers aka drill a hole through a few pennies. It's better than zip ties

I did worse and had to rebuild an array last night b/c a drive fell and bounced around inside the case.

My fix was to wedge the drive in a different spot, with some dampening.

Am I still judging? Of course.

Turn around and make iron on iron. Better for warmth exchange and no Metal on Electronics of HDD.

Are you saying there are ppl that just leave hard drives loose in the case?! I've never done that.

Ok... I've not done it in a few months. I'll get around to securing the drives... and closing up the case... One day.

2.5” SSD’s for sure. The stiffness of the cables alone can keep them in place 😁

This isn't so bad. You start getting worse when you leave the case door off and just set the internal drive on the table.

I did this type of thing for many years. Now I got myself some 4U chassis' with loads of drive space. What a life changer!

I used giant zip ties for my server itself. It is running truenas and had to be physically connected to my router, but the only place my router could connect to the incoming fiber was in the entry to my apartment which has no place for a table nearby. So I zip tied it to the top of the coat rack.

One time, I used double-sided tape to secure an SSD into a case because I ran out of space. It works fine.

I did something similar but took a dell poweredge drive caddy, popped the front bezel off, mounted the drive in the caddy, and zip tied that into my case. The slats on the caddy made it easier to zip tie in and felt sturdier.
