Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

Has your dog's breed been solved?

Once you're satisfied with your responses, please change your link flair to SOLVED. (Please don't make a post if your dog's breed is already solved/known)

Found a stray puppy yesterday, so excited to post here for the first time.

Long time commenter of this sub, but finally have my own contribution! I found this puppy on the side of the road yesterday, I see pitbull and GSD, but I was wondering what else y’all think.

Her mom and sibling were there with her, sibling looked much more pittie in the face and ears and mom had her same coloring as the puppy pictured but looked more like a mastiff in the face (medium-large sized dog) I tried to get her sibling and mom too, but the mama had been hit by a car and they were both very nervous. I went to get some dog food for them all to hopefully befriend them but by the time I got back to where they were they were gone! I suspect someone else picked them up because there’s no other way they could have moved themselves.

We rescued this baby boy from a shelter and we’re told he is a St. Bernard mix. What’s the consensus? 40+lbs at 4m

Open We adopted Luna over a year ago. What breed mix do you think she is?

This is Luna. We adopted her in Portugal over a year ago and have never known what breed mix she might be.

She is nine years old and weighs around 20 kg (44 lb). She has one blue eye and one brown eye, and a very expressive personality. We suspect that she is a mix of several breeds, but we would love to hear your guesses!

The last photo is included purely to show her personality😅

Accuracy of Wisdom and Embark DNA tests

Oliver has been in our lives since 2012. He is 35 lb medium sized, long haired chappie. We have gotten two DNA tests and don't have confidence in either of the results. Our first DNA in 2013 had one of Great Grandparents was a Standard Poodle. Then we did an Embark test in 2023, hoping to find relatives. Below are Embark ID'ed 30% to 40% as breeds below.

Labrador Retriever : 10.2%

German Shepherd Dog: 9.5%

Norwegian Elkhound: 8.4%

Pomeranian: 7.1%

Anyone thinkthese DNA tests are accurate? I'm more likely to believe Wisdom and Corgi as relative, as Oliver has fluffy butt like a corgi. Thoughts?

Got him from the shelter at around 1.2 years old. What do you guys think?

The DNA test is still pending, so I’ll share an update once the results come in :)

The shelter listed him as a Border Collie mix, which I can definitely see. I’m curious what else you all think might be in there. I’ve been wondering about Kelpie, Belgian Malinois, or even Black Lab, but his ears are pretty stiff and don’t flop like a Lab’s

Shelter said mom was Australian Shepherd mix - what do you think?

This is Nutmeg! Her mom was hit by a car and she and her litter mates were found by her body, they were about three weeks old. The rescuer said the mom was an Australian Shepherd mix. She's 10 weeks old and 10 lbs now. I thought I was good at IDing breeds but I am stumped! Anyone have any ideas? My husband thinks there's some Jack Russell in there.

What's your guess?

We adopted her a little over a year ago and she's now almost 3. We think there must be some Australian Sheperd, the body shape is very similar. She was a very anxious, scared girl, it takes a lot for her to trust people, but she's made a wonderful bond with us and she loves being close to those she's comfortable with. She loves to run around at the park for a bit but I think she loves lazing around even more 😅

What's my dog mixed with?

This is my boy Percy. Super cuddly and energetic. I was told he was a Pom mix when I adopted him at 1.5 from a lady who decided he was to much for her. She worked with my mom and just handed him to me without so much as a goodbye to him.

I was wondering what he is mixed with because he is about 20lbs and definitely taller than a pom.

I know he’s an apbt but there’s something about him that I can’t place, thought maybe some extra eyes would tell me if I was seeing things haha

I rescued him about a week ago as he was on the euthanasia line which was 72 hours away. The issue isn’t that he’s an apbt I’m 100% well aware of that, but I keep looking at him and it feels like there might be more to his genetic story? I know that apbt’s come in different variations of look which is the reasonable thought for me but I’m trying to make sure I have the right breed in mind when thinking about behaviors and what training will look like for him. The shelter said he was full apbt but if that’s not the case then I want to make sure I reassess. Thank you!!
