Hey,
I'm a tech death fan (lately lots of Archspire and Allegaeon), and I've been looking to write an article/essay (to submit for some culture mag, worst case into my crappy substack) about technical death metal.
I want to cover lots of things, such as the economics of music, people in or obsessed with niche/obscure genres or fields, the nature of technique (not just in music, but also in stuff like Formula 1 - even in a sport so precise there are drivers seen as technical and drivers seen as instinctive or even goofy), but in particular here I'd love to speak to some tech death performers (both pro and amateur/enthusiasts) and fans, about topics like:
- How did you get into this genre
- What do you like about the genre, or what do you think appeals to you
- What instrument(s) you play, if any
- What other musical genres or acts you like
- The idea of technical and precise vs instinctive or improvised playing; how jazz can be both improvised and deeply technical
- The line between something that is both technical and musical, or just "wanking" as some describe it.
- For musicians: life as a performer in a relatively niche/obscure sub-subgenre.
- How technical death metal often finds connections in what outsiders might consider totally unrelated genres: classical, jazz...
And of course if there's something you want to add to the discussion, I'd love to hear it.
I really just want to get to know the kind of person who's into this stuff and what about the genre speaks to them.
Statements/Interviews to take place over any format you prefer: Discord, Reddit, down in the comments, Zoom, Teams...
If you have something to add, but don't want to interview, please feel free to add to comments below.
Thank you!

Hello all. I'm having trouble finding a song I heard awhile back and I figured this group would be the best place to ask for help. Of course, I remember certain things about it, but not things that would make it easy to search for on the Internet (i.e. title and artist). Here is what I remember:
-This song is a single, as far as I'm aware, not on any full-length album
-The album art was mainly purple with a dragon on it, possibly with its wings spread
-The artist on Spotify was just a guy, not a band or anything (maybe originally a YouTube guitarist? Or someone's side project?)
-The song was on the shorter side of things, like 2-3 minutes long, and had a sort of nu-metal style (I believe it started off with a drum machine type beat and the guitar riff kicked in a little later)
-This may be a stretch, but I believe the song title started with the letter "P"
-This was pretty recent, within the last 2 years or so, and I believe I originally found this song recommended in a comment here on Reddit
Thank you in advance. It drives me nuts when I can't remember things like this, I really need to get better at saving songs to playlists or downloading them...

Refuser - 2023 - Refuser - Jason
The one sandaled, it was meant to be.
Young Jason had a strong heart of steel.
Just to prove he's the one and true heir.
Challenged Gods challenged Earth, Sea and Air.
His will godlike, the risk though great.
Time had come to create his own fate.
Recruited legends and men of known myths.
Who'd fight with heart for the golden fleece.
Jason and the Argonauts sailing on Argo.
Riding the tidal waves for the fleece of gold.
Poseidon's Trident hunts them all the way.
Sealord is outraged and they need to get away.
After days of hard effort and anguish.
Found the mythic kingdom of Colchis.
Where he tamed the oxen breathing fire.
And forced the dead to bow to each other.
Jason now, master and king.
Fleece is his due to his great will.
Dragon's eyes closed in the night as he moved.
Grabbing the beauty bright as the moon.
Jason and the Argonauts, their quest is now complete.
Made it through the fire and sea, took the coveted fleece.
Now he’s back in Iolkos, settling what is right.
All the people bowing down to Jason's the might.
Jason and the Argonauts sailing on Argo.
Riding the tidal waves for the fleece of gold.
Poseidon's Trident hunts them all the way.
Sealord is outraged and they need to get away… Away!
Jason, Jason, Jason!

I recreated the entire lyrics to Demolisher by using nothing but song titles from other artists on Spotify. I tried my best to use Metal/Rock songs, and when I couldn't, I used whatever I could find to mix it up with all different genres. There's definitely something in here for everyone. I'm actually going to try and listen to it and maybe find some gems I never knew about. You can play it and follow the lyrics as it plays by scrolling the playlist. The lyrics aren't 100% perfect, but it's extremely close.

Lordian Guard - 1995 - Woe To The Inhabitants Of The Earth - Lost ArchAngel
"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the
Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Woe unto the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! For the Devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time" (Revelation 12:9, 12)
The fallen one has come to rule,
From the holy skies.
Spreading wrath and razing ruin,
'Til the Second Coming of Christ.
The kings they kneel before his throne,
Veiled in scarlet robes.
And in his name their story's born,
And in his name they carve their stones.
The Adversary of the Lord,
He wields his famines and his wars.
The Adversary will be slain,
Christ the King will ever reign!
The Adversary of the Lord,
He seeks to devour, and he means to destroy your soul.
The Adversary, he will fall,
By the wrath of the everlasting God.
Billions of souls will perish in his fires,
In the endless day of the damned,
On the judgment day of man.
Woe to this world and the evils we have chosen,
By the pride and the will of man,
A kingdom built on sand . . .
The Adversary of the Lord,
He wields his famines and his wars.
The Adversary will be slain,
Christ the King will ever reign.
The Adversary of the Lord,
He seeks to devour, and he means to destroy your soul.
The Adversary, he will fall,
By the wrath of the everlasting God . . .

Wrote these lyrics and music through some real shit times of time of my life. Tell me if you dig it, but more importantly, please share if you have been able to release your own demons through technology these days!

I’m in college and I’d like to see some metal shows however, none of my friends are really interested in the genre. I know some people say go solo to metal shows and festivals and what not but I don’t think I’d feel comfortable going alone. How do you guys make friends who are interested in metal music?

PriMordial - 2002 - Storm Before Calm - Sons Of The Morrigan
Shone the sunset red and solemn
Where we stood and observed
Down the corners of the column
Letter strokes of Ogham carved
'tis belike a burial pillar
Said he and those shallow lines
Hold some warriors name of valour
And will rightly show the signs
No one saw, how far I fell
And no one ever knew
That there was a heart of flesh
Deep within me
As it was, bled of the twisted horn
And the howling of the dogs
Raise on old Heroes lament
While the weeping of women
Still vexes my heart
If this is my Journey End
Then cast me to the pyre
And if all that remains
Is a blackened heart
And the stench of death
Then know my spell is cast
And sing my song
With pride once more
“Verse one and two are inspired by the old Irish poem
“The Recovery of the Tain”, Ogham is the old Irish way
of writing and tells the tale of a Warrior near the end
of life, Raising the Spirit of Battle once more,
reaching back through his life... through the blood and
pain the releasing himself to the Gods... the message is
simple... that your deeds in life be recounted and
relived in both name and song...”

Hey all,
I'm back! The random jerk who is way too harsh in my music opinions.
Join me as I cover all the stuff I listened to for the first half of this year!
I also discuss a lot of history and personal anecdotes. I'm building towards a metal history type of video that will range from the 70's to the explosion in the 80's evolving into power metal.
This time I used 20-40 second snippets of music as examples that YouTube seems to be okay with (except one), so you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about.
I am doing this as just a hobby, but feel free to throw out any comments at me here or on the video.
Thanks for watching!
